Berry Deals Big Blow to Shimamoto's Stack

Hector Berry raised to 2,400,000 from the button and Branden Shimamoto three-bet jammed from the small blind for Harrison Ashdown to quickly fold his big blind and get out of their way.

"I need a ten," Shimamoto shouted out to his rail.

The dealer delivered just that when they revealed the 5♣10♣K♠ on the flop for Shimamoto to hit a pair of a tens but Berry also picked up the straight draw.

The turn was the 7♦ which didn't change things but the J♠ on the river did as Berry hit his straight to double up and leave Shimamoto short.

The flop came 7♠5♣4♠ and all three players checked. Shimamoto bet 2,500,000 on the 7♣ turn and Varrasso was the only caller.

The river was the 6♥. Shimamoto bet 4,000,000 and Varrasso called, tabling J♣2♣.

"Fuck," said Varrasso. "I thought I had a three!" (for the straight).

Shimamoto turned over K♣10♣ for king-high and won the pot.

"What the fuck just happened?" said Berry, as Shimamoto took down the pot.

Admit it, there were at least times in recent years you thought Daniel Negreanu might never win another World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet. Perhaps, even he had moments of doubt.

There's no longer reason for anyone to doubt the Poker Hall of Famer, not after he took down one of the most prestigious tournaments in all of poker on Thursday, the $50,000 Poker Players Championship for over $1.1 million.

Negreanu's last bracelet came in 2013, and his most recent WSOP title in Las Vegas prior to the 2024 PPC occurred all the way back in 2008. It's been a long journey to bracelet No. 7, one we've chronicled in this article.
