Day 1 of Event #84: $50,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold'em Kicks Off at 2 PM

Joao Vieira
Joao Vieira

While players in the Main Event of the World Series of Poker are fighting on Day 6 to be in the top 100, some of the best players who have been eliminated will gather in Paris and Horseshoe Las Vegas to play Event #84: $50,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold'em.

At the beginning of the 2023 WSOP, Leon Sturm came out on top of the first $50,000 High Roller of the summer, for his first bracelet and $1,546,024. Last year, it was Joao Vieira who finished first in this event, outlasting a field of 107 entries. Thanks to his victory, the Portuguese player won his second bracelet and a career-high score of $1,384,415.

This year, Vieira may be unable to defend his title as he is currently the chip leader at the beginning of Day 3 of the $25,000 H.O.R.S.E. High Roller. Fortunately for him, late registration for this event remains open until the start of Day 2.

For those who play on Day 1, the cards will be in the air at 2 p.m. All players will receive 300,000 chips to start and if their stack goes down to zero, a single reentry is allowed. They will play 12 levels of 40 minutes each, with a 15-minute break every 3 levels.

Those who bag chips at the end of the day will come back on Thursday, July 13, at 1 p.m. PDT for Day 2, where the goal will be to play down to five players. Then, a winner will be crowned on Day 3, Friday, July 14.

Follow along with the PokerNews live reporting team from the first raise until the final chip has been bagged on Day 1.

Foxen Chips Up Early; More New Arrivals

Nível 1 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Kristen Foxen
Kristen Foxen

Kristen Foxen limped her small blind and Bill Klein checked his option. The flop rolled AKJ and both players tapped the table, peeling the 9. Foxen then tossed out a red chip for a 5,000 and Klein quickly folded.

Just moments before this hand, Klein saw Chris Brewer enter the field and he said, "Him, I want to play with that guy. He only won two bracelets so far this summer."

All in jest, or maybe not, Brewer asked Klein to keep his chips fresh for him.

Plenty of competitors have joined the ranks and a third table has been opened up.

More Arrivals; The Foxens Draw Same Table

Nível 4 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Alex Foxen
Alex Foxen

When Alex Foxen went to sit at Table 113, Ren Lin who was seated on his left said, "Nice! Perfect table draw...".

Kristen Foxen, his wife and fellow crusher, is currently seated two seats to his right. This isn't the first time that it's happened this year and typically it seems they make a point not to converse much when competing against each other.

The current table seating will likely be very much in flux until late registration is over as they're opening tables upon the arrival of new entrants.

Colossus Winner Hops in High Roller; Bryn Kenney Joins The Field

Nível 5 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Moshe Refaelowitz
Moshe Refaelowitz

Recent $400 Colossus Winner, Moshe Refaelowitz, raised to 8,000 under the gun and was only called by last years Main Event winner, Espen Jørstad, in the big blind.

The dealer fanned out the 863 and both players checked, turning the 2.

Jørstad checked again and Refaelowitz threw out a bet of 19,000 when the dealer informed him his time was almost up. Jørstad made the call.

The river peeled the 9 and both players checked, with Jørstad announcing he had a pair of eights, as he turned over 108, prompting Refaelowitz to throw his hand in the muck.

Lococo Takes a Small One; Foxens at Different Tables Now

Nível 5 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Alejandro Andres Lococo 'Papo MC'
Alejandro Andres Lococo 'Papo MC'

Alejandro Lococo raised to 10,000 on the button and Damian Salas made the call in the big blind.

Heads up, they saw a flop of 6A5 and when checked to, Lococo placed a bet of 9,000 and Salas quickly released his hand.

In other news, after Alex Foxen drew the same table as his wife, Kristen Foxen, the couple likely only sat together but one orbit before Kristen was moved to a new table, as late entrants continue to arrive.

Salas Doubles With Aces Through Chadha

Nível 7 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Damian Salas
Damian Salas

In the big blind, Damian Salas flipped his cards as he was at risk for 265,000 chips against Carlos Chadha in the cutoff.

Damian Salas: AA
Carlos Chadha: QQ

On 6K5910, Salas' aces held, and the 2020 WSOP Main Event champion doubled up.

On a subsequent hand, Chadha lost almost all his stack, and had only 41,000 chips remaining when he moved all in on the next hand. Alejandro Lococo was the only one to call.

Carlos Chadha: A10
Alejandro Lococo: KJ

On the flop 6AK, both players hit a pair, but Chadha stayed ahead. But the K came on the turn to give trips to Lococo. The 8 on the river didn't change anything, and Chadha left the area.

"I need a massage," he said when he saw a masseuse on his way to the exit.

A Scary Turn For Everyone

Nível 8 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Espen Uhlen Jørstad
Espen Uhlen Jørstad

Ramin Hajiyev raised from under the gun to 18,000 and Espen Jørstad reraised it to 54,000 from late position. Hajiyev thought shortly before calling.

The flop scrolled across, 7Q8 Hajiyev checked and Jørstad continued for 64,000, receiving a call. The turn brought the A and both players checked, although Jørstad used all the time allotted to him.

The river brought the 9 and this time both players checked quickly. Hajiyev showed the 1010 and Jørstad quickly tabled KK to scoop the pot.

Kenney Bites the Dust; Klein Check-Shoves

Nível 9 : Blinds 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Bryn Kenney
Bryn Kenney

Bryn Kenney was seen collecting his belongings at the dealer scooped up a paired board. Ramin Hajiyev had gone all-in preflop with the A6, and Kenney, down to about 80,000, made the call with the KJ. The ace-high of Hajiyev held, and Kenney was quick to leave the tournament area.

The very next hand, Bill Klein and Moshe Refaelowitz were heads-up to a flop of J72, and when Refaelowitz bet 15,000, Klein was quick to go all in for his remaining 182,000.

Refaelowitz got the count but ultimately pushed his hand in the muck.

Haxton With a Quick U-Turn

Nível 10 : Blinds 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Isaac Haxton
Isaac Haxton

Isaac Haxton registered late but soon had an empty seat in his place. Table 117 relayed that Haxton had gotten it in with AxKx against the pocket queens of Henrick Hecklen. Hecklen's queens held up when the board ran out bricks for Haxton.

Fans of Haxton have no reason to fear, as he was already seen casually entering the tournament area with a fresh stack. No stranger to the game and entirely unphased, Haxton is also one who also got a bracelet this year in the $25,000 High Roller for $1,698,215.
