Welcome Back for Day 2 of Event #58: $3,000 Limit Hold'em

JJ Liu
JJ Liu

Just like many other events at the 2023 World Series of Poker, there was another major influx of entries for Event #58: $3,000 Limit Hold'em. A total of 263 players entered this event, 50 more than the 213 that were recorded in the previous year. Some could say that is surprising for an "old-school" poker format, but there are more players playing any version of poker now than ever.

After 10 levels were completed on the opening day, just 115 players bagged up chips and will be returning to the felt for Day 2. Leading the pack will be Gregory Josephson who finished Day 1 with an impressive 241,000 chips. The only other player to eclipse the 200,000 chip mark was Daniel Maczuga with 217,500 chips.

Although having a big stack in this type of event will certainly have its advantages, applying pressure with it is not the same as a no-limit event. Some other names to keep an eye on toward the top of the leaderboard include Dan Shak (175,000), JJ Liu (165,000), and Michael Mizrachi (163,000).

The cards are slated to go back in the air at 1 p.m. PST with the blinds resuming on level 11. The blinds will be 1,500/3,000 while the limits will be 3,000/6,000. Another 10 levels are on the schedule today with each level being 60 minutes apiece. There will be a 15-minute break after every two levels and a 60-minute dinner break after level 16.

The bubble is expected to burst at some point today with 40 players reaching the money. A min-cash in this event will be worth $4,837 but the lion's share of the $702,210 prizepool will be up for grabs when Day 3 rolls around. The winner will be taking home $165,250 along with the WSOP gold bracelet.

Keep it tuned in here as the PokerNews live reporting team will have all your live updates throughout the next couple of days en route to crowning a champion.

Jokingly Ho responded, "I was waiting for the applause... what took you so long?"

On a heads-up flop of 262, Maria Ho checked and faced a bet from Justin Lapka. Ho raised it up and Lapka made the call.

The turn brought the 5 and this time both players checked, revealing the 4 on the river. Ho now took the initiative and led out. Lapka was having a difficult time putting it all together and went as far as quietly asking, "What do you have, Maria?" which received no response.

Ho had just won a hand the last pot and even her previous adversary seemed to be trying to catch some kind of read on her. She remained still and finally Lapka showed J5 for a small pair and missed flush draw as he folded, relinquishing the pot to Ho.

A completed board of 6x5x3x4x10x was spread across the felt and Kuenwai Lo led out with a bet from the big blind. Joe McKeehen called on his left and Michael Thorpe gave it some thought before folding. Lo tabled 86 for a pair of sixes but McKeehen held K10 for a pair of tens.

"Ahh, big trouble," Thorpe mumbled to himself, stating that he folded a winner.

On the next hand, Lo raised it up from the small blind and McKeehen called in the big blind. The flop fell 1043 and Lo check-called a bet from McKeehen.

The turn brought the 5 and Lo checked again. McKeehen tossed in another bet and Lo check-raised this time which McKeehen called. The river was the 6 and Lo led out with a bet. McKeehen shook his head as he pitched his K10 into the muck.

"Same board, exact same board."
