$50,000 Poker Players Championship To Determine Finalists on Day 4

Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

The halfway point has been reached during the 2023 World Series of Poker at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas on the Las Vegas Strip and one of the most prestigious tournaments on the schedule will continue at 1 p.m. local time. Only 12 players out of 99 entries remain in contention on Day 4 of Event #43: $50,000 Poker Players Championship and they will battle in nine different poker variants to earn the biggest slice of the $4,727,250 prize pool.

Two former champions of the mixed-game contest have a chance at a repeat victory and 2013 winner Matthew Ashton returns as the chip leader with 4,450,000. Two-time PPC champion Brian Rast advanced with 3,365,000 in chips and can further cement his legacy in the world of poker by potentially joining Michael Mizrachi as a three-time champion in this very event.

All eyes of spectators and opponents alike will also be on ten-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Ivey, who returns fifth on the leaderboard with 3,135,000. Right behind Ivey is the 2021 WSOP Player of the Year Josh Arieh (2,360,000), who joined the elusive club of five-time bracelet winners earlier in the ongoing series.

While nine of the 12 remaining players already have at least one WSOP gold bracelet to their name, Hal Rotholz (3,900,000), Talal Shakerchi (3,430,000), and Kristopher Tong (1,190,000) all seek a maiden victory.

Three players have earned cash prizes in this event so far including John Monnette, Phil Hellmuth and Maxx Coleman but they all bowed out late on Day 3.

The 12 remaining hopefuls have already locked up a cash prize of $97,209, but the next pay jump to a six-figure score awaits after just one elimination. Day 4 is seeking to whittle the field of contenders down to the last five contenders and will continue the deep structure with levels of 100 minutes each.

Arieh checked again on the 3 river and folded as Shakerchi sized up to 500,000.

A few hands later, Hal Rotholz opened to 65,000 from the hijack and Matthew Ashton three-bet to 180,000 to his immediate left. Rotholz called.

Rotholz checked on the J53 flop and Ashton continued for 140,000. Rotholz check-raised to 450,000 and the 2013 PPC champion folded with further fight.

Back-to-Back Pots Boost Ivey

Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

Johannes Becker raised and called a three-bet by Phil Ivey to then discard two versus one and check-call a bet. On the second draw, Becker discarded one while Ivey patted and Becker check-called another bet.

The final draw saw Becker take one again with Ivey patting behind. They checked and Ivey won the pot with the 9x8x6x3x2x.

Marco Johnson then raised from under the gun and he was called by Ivey in the small blind and Ray Dehkharghani came along from the big blind. Each of them discarded two, which Ivey made sure of before he bet. Dehkharghani raised and Johnson tank-folded before Ivey made it three bets and earned a call from Dehkharghani.

Both then patted the final two draws with Ivey betting and Dehkharghani calling. Ivey showed his 7x6x4x3x2x for a number two and raked in another pot.

Kristopher Tong opened to 70,000 on the button and Johannes Becker three-bet jammed a stack of around 500,000 from the big blind. Tong snap called with a bigger stack.

Becker was in great shape to double until the flop landed 34A to give Tony a big lead and Tony only improved on the J4 runout to send Becker out in 12th place for $97,209.

"I felt you were winning that hand," Brian Rast commented.

"Me too," replied Tong. "You know why? Because I did the one-chip snap-call."

Marco Johnson open-jammed a stack of 270,000 as the first player to act and Brian Rast called on the button with a bigger stack.

Marco Johnson: K10
Brian Rast: 88

Johnson was in danger of going out in 11th place as the flop landed A35 and he received no help from the Q turn. However, the K arrived on the river and the Rast was history as Johnson doubled through the two-time PPC champion.

Marco Johnson completed and Kristopher Tong raised before Brian Rast called. The bring-in ducked out of the way and Johnson called to make three-way action.

Both players called a bet from Tong on fourth, fifth, and sixth street. Tong led out on seventh and Rast folded before Johnson leaned forward to contemplate his last 15,000. After a few minutes of thought, Johnson decided to take his shot on the next hand.

The following hand had no luck for Johnson and he was out of the tournament in 11th place for $115,477.

Ashton Rolls Up on Dehkharghani, Fills Up on Sixth Street

Matthew Ashton

Seven Card Stud

Matthew Ashton: 88/8AJJ/7
Ray Dehkharghani: XxXx/AQ76/Xx

Matthew Ashton joined the table after the elimination of Marco Johnson and was greeted with a friendly joke by Kristopher Tong.

"They got us a live one, boys," Tong said as the 2013 PPC champion sat down.

Dehkharghani completed and Ashton raised. Dehkharghani responded with a three-bet and Ashton called. Dehkharghani bet on fourth street and Ashton called, and the same action took place on fifth street.

After pairing his jack on sixth street, Ashton led out with a bet and Dehkharghani called. Ashton bet once more on seventh street and Dehkharghani went in the tank for several minutes as he went back and forth between shuffling chips and crossing his hands over his face.

Dehkharghani eventually called and saw the bad news as Ashton started the hand with rolled up eights and improved to a full house along the way.

Brian Rast opened on the button and Ray Dehkharghani defended out of the big blind. Dehkharghani checked on the flop of 8QA and Rast continued with a bet. Dehkharghani check-raised with just one big bet behind and Rast called.

Dehkharghani moved all in on the K turn and Rast called to put Jennifer Harman's pick for the Poker Hall of Fame at risk.

Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

Talal Shakerchi won a pot off Hal Rotholz when he made a ten-eight, as Rotholz exposed a paired seven after a checked down final draw.

Shakerchi then lost some chips to James Obst before Obst raised the button and table short stack Daniel Alaei called out of the big blind. Alaei discarded two versus one and check-called a bet. On the second draw, Alaei discarded two versus one again and then check-folded to another bet. Obst flashed a number two before collecting the pot.

Shakerchi lost more chips to Obst when he discarded three and two against a patted second draw of Obst, who gained further ground on the secondary table.

Daniel Alaei and Talal Shakerchi had just tangled in a few pots before a no-limit hold'em confrontation that saw Alaei all-in from the big blind against Shakerchi in early position.

Alaei couldn't pull ahead as the flop landed Q86 to keep Shakerchi ahead with nines. The 6 turn gave Alaei additional outs to a flush but the 6 on the river improved Shakerchi to a full house as the five-time bracelet winner hit the rail in 10th place for $115,477.
