The 2023 World Series of Poker at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas enters the second week, which brings with it new opportunities to compete for one of the coveted WSOP gold bracelets. Among them is also Event #19: $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em Freezeout, set to get underway at 12 noon local time.

One year ago, this tournament attracted a field of 752 entries for a total prize pool of $1,673,200. The top 113 finishers earned a portion of the prize money and American poker pro Scott Seiver earned his fourth gold bracelet after defeating Alexander Farahi in heads-up play. The victory came with a payday of $320,059 and Seiver narrowly missed out on a fifth career bracelet soon after when finishing second in Event #38: $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship.

Mixed game and high-stakes specialist Seiver has more than $25 million in cashes to his name, of which more than $6 million come from 64 results at the WSOP and two at the WSOPE. He has already participated in events of the 2023 series in Sin City, but not recorded any deep runs yet.

Further finalists one year ago included Aditya Agarwal, Chris Hunichen, Lewis Spencer, Nick Schulman, Sergio Aido, Steve Zolotow, and David Goodman. Among them, Schulman already made the headlines during the ongoing festival after he earned his fourth bracelet in Event #9: $1,500 Seven Card Stud three days ago.

All participants receive 35,000 in chips and there will be a 20-minute break every three levels with a 60-minute dinner break scheduled at the end of level 9 at approximately 6:40 p.m. local time. The tournament features a total of 17 levels of 40 minutes each on Day 1, during which the money stages may be reached. Late registration for this freezeout tournament is open for the first 12 levels and following break until approximately 10 p.m.

As of Day 2, the level duration increases to 60 minutes each with ten levels scheduled or until the ten-handed unofficial final table has been reached, whichever comes first.

Knockout for Ko Against Ki

"He got me covered?" Junhyoung Ki inquired and once the dealer confirmed, the South Korean player headed to the rail to potentially become the first casualty in the tournament. His chips were shipped over to Scott Ko and it was the most classic of setups to cause the knockout.

Ki's K♥K♦ were dominated by the A♦A♥ of Ko and nothing changed on the 7♦7♠6♠7♥9♠ runout.

Hawkins Involved in the Action

With now more than 440 players in the field, the notables keep trickling in. Among them is also 15-time WSOP Circuit ring winner Maurice Hawkins, who is involved in the action early on. In a small pot to the 10♠10♥7♦4♥2♣, Hawkins bet 400 and his table neighbour called.

Hawkins showed 8♥7♥ but was pipped by a notch as his opponent held the J♣7♣. However, Hawkins already chipped up in the early stages.

Catela Gets a Shove Through Against Pecheux

With 11,100 in the middle to the A♣8♦4♥ flop, Jose Catela checked and Erwann Pecheux bet 2,000. Catela check-raised to 4,500 and Pecheux called. On the 5♠ turn, both players checked and Catela then jammed all-in for 22,000.

Pecheux tanked for three minutes before he asked for an exact count. Once that was done, he tanked another two minutes and Catela called the clock on him. He was given 20 seconds to act, which ran down without a decision as the hand was dead, awarding the pot to Catela.

Benso Has Heaps Early On

Still full of adrenaline, Sergio Benso walked away from the table to get some fresh air and then recalled a "crazy hand with four players all-in". According to Benso, his Qx9x had flopped two pair on Q♦9♦5x and he was up against three opponents with A♦6♦, J♦5♦ and Q♠J♠ respectively.

The hand of Benso held as his stays certainly confirms, since he has moved into the lead very early in this tournament.

Bansal Knocked Out in "Classic" Preflop Confrontation

The small blind exposed A♥Q♥ and Bigot won the pot with the J♣10♣.

Shylko Vanishes in Two Hands

On the river of a J♥9♦5♦2♦5♣, Aliaksandr Shylko pulled the trigger and all but moved all-in while keeping 400 chips behind. Brian Battistone looked him up and both cards were exposed. The K♣J♣ of Battistone won the pot as Shylko had missed the nut flush draw with A♦Q♣.

With a smirk on the face, the Belorussian was then all-in the next hand and faced a raise to 1,200 as well as the call by Nicolas Gola in the big blind. Gola check-called for 1,500 on the 8♦7♣7♥ flop before the 10♣ turn was checked. Gola bet the 2♦ river to isolate and showed his 9♠9♣, which beat Shylko's K♥8♠.

Alt’s Top Set Sends Beresford to Rail

Dinesh Alt was in the middle of a growing pot even before the flop, and his chip stack expanded as a result.

Alt raised 2,200 in early position, but Conor Beresford to his immediate left three-bet to 7,200, which Alt called after action folded to him.

The dealer fanned 6♣3♥8♦ on the board, which Alt checked, and Beresford bet 8,000. Alto took more than a minute studying the board, and then check-raised to 24,000. This time, it was his opponent’s turn to take a moment or two, but he made the call.

The turn produced Q♦, on which Alt check-called for 16,000 to bring 7♦ on the river.

Alt checked, and then watched his opponent count his stack, which totalled 40,300. Beresford announced an all-in bet, which Alt immediately called.
