The Two Failed Bluffs in One Week that Cost Doug Polk $700k

Chris Moneymaker had the Bluff of the Century in 2003. This past week, Doug Polk had perhaps the Failed Bluff of the Century.

On Sunday, heads-up for a bracelet, Polk bluffed off a significant portion of his stack at the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) less than one week after his infamous bluff attempt that didn't get through on Hustler Casino Live's $1 million game.

In both instances, the Upswing Poker founder had a busted draw and attempted to use aggression to coerce his opponents into folding somewhat marginal holdings in massive pots. Both times, however, his efforts were unsuccessful and quite costly.

Spencer Doubles Through O'Donnell

Lewis Spencer raised to 400,000 in the hijack and on the button, Ryan O'Donnell called.

The flop of 10♠J♥3♣ saw Spencer continue for 550,000 which O'Donnell called.

Spencer moved all in on the 5♥ turn for 2,175,000 total and O'Donnell called to put Spencer at risk.

The river came out the 10♥ and the ace-jack held for the double up for Spencer and he overtook O'Donnell's chip count.

Michael Jozoff Eliminated in 9th Place ($121,275)

Frank Funaro raised to 320,000 from the hijack and in the big blind, Michael Jozoff defended.

The flop came out 9♥Q♦4♣ and Jozoff check called a bet of 200,000 from Funaro.

Jozoff checked once more on the 3♣ turn that saw Funaro bet once more, this time to the tune of 700,000 and once more Jozoff called.

On the 10♦ river, Jozoff checked a third time over to Funaro who moved all in for 2,240,000 which covered Jozoff. Jozoff took off his sunglasses as he put in a time extension and pondered his decision. After some thought he put his chips in the middle and the cards were turned on their backs.

Jozoff's pair of queens was no good against the pair of aces in Funaro's hand and Jozoff became the first casualty of the final table.

O'Donnell Picks Off a Bluff from Rast

Brian Rast raised to 320,000 in middle position and Ryan O'Donnell called from the big blind. The flop fell A♣J♦4♣ and O'Donnell started with a check. Rast bet 300,000 and O'Donnell called to see the 10♠ on the turn.

O'Donnell checked again and Rast counted out a bet of 850,000. O'Donnell still called and the K♣ completed the board. O'Donnell checked for the third time and Rast reached back for bet of 2,500,000. O'Donnell spent nearly two minutes in the tank before finally making the call. Rast tabled 8♥8♦ which was no good against the A♠10♦ of O'Donnell.

Aleksejs Ponakovs Eliminated In 10th Place ($96,986)

Darren Elias opened to 245,000 in the cutoff and on the button Ponakovs moved all in for 1,740,000 which saw Lewis Spencer in the big blind use two time banks before folding for roughly the same stack. Elias snap called and the cards were on their backs.

The final nine players have taken their seats for the final table.
