Katchalov, Kanit and Tice Among 100 Players to Advance to Day 2 of Event #27: $1,500 Shootout No-Limit Hold'em

Nível 14 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Eugene Katchalov

Day 1 of Event #27: $1,500 Shootout No-Limit Hold'em at the 2022 WSOP at Bally's and Paris Las Vegas saw 1,000 hopefuls play across 100 ten-handed tables with the winner of each advancing to Round 2 and securing a minimum cash worth $5,835.

Among those who found a bag are WSOP bracelet winner Eugene Katchalov, Italian poker pro Mustapha Kanit and Ignition sponsored player Landon Tice. Tice was involved with an hours-long heads-up battle against fellow pro Kevin Schulz but ultimately found pocket queens to secure his place in Round 2.

Notables who were unfortunate enough not to advance include defending champion Gershon Distenfeld, poker commentator Nick Schulman and former WSOP Main Event champion Ryan Riess.

All players who return for Day 2 will have roughly 250,000 in chips, or ten times the tournament starting stack. Some may have slightly less than that as all stacks were in play from the start of the day and those that were unsold were blinded off into the well. The format will be the same as Day 1, with ten-handed tables playing down to a single winner, setting up a final table of ten for Day 3. While the surviving players are now in the money, all eyes will surely be on the gold bracelet and $240,480 that awaits the eventual winner.

Day 2 resumes June 14th, 12 p.m. PDT with blinds at 2,000/4,000/4,000a. Be sure to tune in as the PokerNews live reporting team continues to provide comprehensive coverage of this and all other events at the 2022 WSOP at Bally's and Paris Las Vegas.

The {7-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{4-Spades}{2-Spades} runout kept Kanit ahead and ensured he moves on to the next round.

Eugene Katchalov
Eugene Katchalov

Eugene Katchalov shoved from the button and Masato Yokosawa called off for his last 23,000.

Masato Yokosawa: {j-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Eugene Katchalov: {8-Clubs}{6-Spades}

Yokosawa was ahead with jack-high but that was no longer the case after Katchalov paired his eight on the {8-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} flop. Nothing changed on the {q-Hearts} turn or {a-Hearts} river, securing Katachalov's place in round 2.

On a board reading {6-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{j-Hearts} Mike Jozoff overbet jammed 40,000 into a pot of around 15,000. Qui Nguyen went into the tank but ultimately made a difficult call holding {q-Spades}{9-Clubs}. Jozoff flashed a bluff before mucking to send the rest of his chips Nguyen's way. Nguyen, meanwhile, moves onto round 2, having secured at least $5,835.

Leonard Advances

Nível 10 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Patrick Leonard
Patrick Leonard

Patrick Leonard opened to 4,000 from the button and faced an all in from Pierce McKellar. Leonard, with the larger stack, made the call to put McKellar at risk.

Pierce McKellar: {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Patrick Leonard: {k-Spades}{10-Spades}

Leonard had McKellar dominated and looked set to advance to round 2. The {2-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{7-Hearts} did, however, give McKellar a flush draw and he picked up additional outs on the {5-Spades} turn. Unfortunately for him, he could not find a club, eight or six on the river and was sent to the rail short of the money. Leonard congratulated his opponent on his play before McKellar exited, saying "you were the last person I wanted to go heads-up against".

Stepuchin Binks Turn

Nível 8 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Frank Stepuchin
Frank Stepuchin

Frank Stepuchin managed to navigate his way to heads-up play. On a flop reading {8-Clubs}{3-Spades}{6-Diamonds} Stepuchin in the big blind led out for 16,000 into a pot of roughly 24,000. The player on the button raised to 31,000 and was called by Stepuchin.

Stepuchin quickly shoved his remaining stack into the middle on the {q-Clubs} turn and his opponent called just as quickly to put Stepuchin at risk.

Frank Stepuchin: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Button Player: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

Stepuchin had found a fortunate turn to put him way out in front of his opponent, who was now drawing to just two outs. He could not find any help on the {5-Diamonds} river, however, and Stepuchin took down a massive pot to put him well in the lead.

Shortly after Stepuchin was seen bagging up having secured a spot in the second round and at least $5,835.

Gurney Felts Watson

Nível 6 : 400/800, 800 ante
Mike Watson
Mike Watson

Mike Watson opened to 1,700 from the cutoff and received a single call from Larry Gurney out of the big blind.

The flop came {5-Spades}{k-Spades}{8-Hearts} and Gurney checked to Watson, who continued for 1,000. Gurney made the call to send the players to the turn.

On the {q-Spades} turn, Gurney checked again but this time, when Watson fired off a second bet of 3,200, Gurney responded with a raise to 7,000. Watson gave his decision some thought before moving all in. Gurney snapped it off to put Watson at risk.

Mike Watson: {k-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}
Larry Gurney: {9-Spades}{8-Spades}

Gurney was ahead of Watson's two pair with the turned flush and would just need to fade eights and kings heading to the river. The {2-Diamonds} gave no help to Watson, sending him to the rail, and giving Gurney a large boost to his stack.

Scott Seiver

The heads-up action was picked up on the turn with a board of {9-Spades}{j-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Spades}.

Scott Seiver led out with a bet, before his opponent, who had Seiver covered, moved all in. Seiver made the call.

Scott Seiver: {9-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}
Opponent: {j-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}

Seiver was ahead with his two pair, but that changed when the {10-Spades} river gave the opponent the better two pair, and the pot, sending Seiver to the rail.

Berkowitz Ousts Riess

Nível 3 : 200/400, 400 ante
Ryan Riess
Ryan Riess

The 2013 WSOP Main Event champion Ryan Riess was short stacked and shoved his remaining 3,500 into the middle from under the gun. Connor Berkowitz one seat over re-jammed for 9,700 and was called by the player to his left, who had both Riess and Berkowitz covered. The remaining players at the table got out of the way.

Ryan Riess: {a-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}
Connor Berkowitz: {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Early Position Player: {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}

"Do you want the chicken power?" asked Frank Stepuchin, who was also at the table, of Riess. The offer was politely declined prior to the {k-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop. The {2-Hearts} turn kept the pocket sevens ahead but Berkowtiz nailed the {10-Clubs} river, giving him an almost full triple-up and knocking out Riess.
