Norm MacDonald Busts in Brutal Fashion

Nível 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

Having spent more time up from his seat watching basketball (like a fair few players, to be fair) than in it for the last level, Norm MacDonald has hit the rail right after the cut-off time for re-entry. Down to 11,600, he three-bet all in from the cutoff over a preflop open in early position; call.

MacDonald: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Preflop opener: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}

The flop came down with the {k-Diamonds} in the door, plus an accompanying {10-Clubs}{j-Spades}. "Don't do it," was said. But the turn did it: the {a-Spades} brought in the straight for the pocket queens, and no amount of saying, "Pair the board!" could make the river {7-Spades} do so.

"Brutal," said one of his neighbours, then, "See you in October."

Kateian Nearly Doubles - Without Showdown

Nível 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

Scott Kateian has been slowly working his way in from the table outskirts at the Rio Convention Centre today, starting off in the poker room (the actual poker room, in the casino proper) which comes into play when fields of this magnitude need to be accommodated. His stack, however, has been working its way down; when he arrived in Brasilia ("I'm finally on the stage!") he had only nine big blinds. He won a pot by getting a walk once, but that just kept him level.

Finally he picked up pocket aces, with 8.5bb remaining. It was opened preflop to 2,500 with one caller before action reached him and he moved all in. Neither player would put the rest in the pot to see a showdown, however, so he picked up 7,500 right there, enough for nearly a full double through.

Big Stacks in the Pavilion Room

Nível 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

The Pavilion Room is starting to break but there are still plenty of tables in action as the Day 1 field starts to trim down.

Riad Agel was spotted with a 157,000 stack, and a few tables over Cristobal Romano is holding on to one of the biggest stacks in the field, at 191,000.

Agel played three consecutive pots, winning two, to chip up to his current count.

Schulman Making a Bid for Back-to-Back Finals in Seniors Event

Nível 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

Joe Schulman, who finished 8th in this event last year (winning $76,191), is on the lookout for another final table appearance in 2019. His stack at the end of Level 9 is just over 160,000, more than three times the average.

Mischkot Eclipses the 200k Mark

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

It took Michael Mischkot several minutes to stack all of his newly won chips after scoring a huge bustout at the end of Level 9.

Michael Mischkot: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}
Opponent: {a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}

Mischkot was on the button, his opponent in early position, and each player put 30,000 chips in on the flop {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}. The turn came the {j-Hearts} and the early position player went all in for his remaining 47,200, Mischkot thought it over for awhile before putting in the call.

The at-risk player's flop two pair was counterfeited on the turn, giving Mischkot the lead with his {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{j-Hearts} with the queen kicker. The river ran out the {7-Hearts}, and Mischkot now has one of the biggest stacks heading into the conclusion of Day 1.

Another player at the table asked Mischkot why he wasn't worried about his opponent having a jack on the paired turn, and Mischkot said the opponent's timing gave it away.

Halfon Busts Hellmuth

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Albert Halfon has busted one of the great bracelet-hunters (and catchers) of all time - Phil Hellmuth. A late registrant, Hellmuth will not be winning his 16th bracelet in the Seniors 2019.

Down to 20,000 or so, Hellmuth's last hand was a three-way pot. An early position player limped for 1,200, Hellmuth made it 6,000 to go and was called by the limper and button Halfon.

Flop: {3-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}. Check to Hellmuth who moved all in. Halfon called, and the third player folded.

Halfon: {6-Spades}{7-Spades} for top pair.
Hellmuth: {k-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}, an overcard, flush draw and straightening potential.

Nothing came to improve Hellmuth's hand on the {9-Spades}{2-Clubs} turn and river and he was up and off in moments.

Weissman Runs into Quads in Last Half Hour of Play

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Wendy Weissman has lost over a third of her steadily-built stack in the closing session of Day 1. She led out for 9,000 on a flop of {k-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{7-Spades}, and her in-position opponent min-raised, making it 18,000. She made the call and saw the {9-Diamonds} on the turn. This street neither player bet. On the {7-Diamonds} river, Weissman checked and her opponent threw in another 9,000. She made the call to see the other two sevens in her opponent's hand. She flashed her hand to the table but mucked too quickly to note it.
