Huge Field Converges on Day 1 of the $1,000 Seniors No-Limit Hold'em Championship

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Albert Halfon
Albert Halfon

It was huge turnout for Day 1 of Event #32: $1,000 Seniors No-Limit Hold'em Championship, as 5,916 players showed up and came just short of setting an attendance record for this event. The record was set last year at 5,918 players, meaning the 2019 edition of this event came up just two entries short of matching last year’s total.

The field whittled down to 1,778 grinders by night’s end, and those players will come back to the Rio Friday at 11 a.m. for the Day 2 restart. With 888 money spots up for grabs, the money bubble will most likely burst Friday as the remaining field battles for the $662,594 first prize and the WSOP bracelet!

Albert Halfon (271,700) is one of the big stacks coming back for Day 2, and he ended his night with a bustout he’ll probably remember for the rest of his life. The 15-time bracelet winning Phil Hellmuth entered the event late and sat at Halfon’s table, but Hellmuth didn’t last long as Halfon knocked him out, took his 20,000-chip stack and had his table mates calling him “Moneybags” after eliminating the legendary Hellmuth.

Other large stacks making it through Day 1 include Ron Larsen (289,900), Anthony Martin (273,700), Chisu Danut (264,000), and Michael Mischkot (226,800) all of whom will be looking to add to their piles when the Day 2 restart begins with Level 11, and the blinds at 800/1600.

Notable players making it to Day 2 include Matt Savage, David Einhorn, Barry Greenstein, Cliff Josephy, Layne Flack, Barbara Enright and Joe Hachem (80,000).

In addition to Hellmuth, other notable Day 1 bustouts included Norm MacDonald, who survived to Level 9 but suffered a brutal elimination and had to head for the exit.

This event is scheduled for four days of action, with 10 one-hour levels on the slate for Friday. The tournament will play down to six players Saturday, and the final table will commence on Sunday and play down to a champion!

Halfon Busts Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth

Albert Halfon has busted one of the great bracelet-hunters (and catchers) of all time - Phil Hellmuth. A late registrant, Hellmuth will not be winning his 16th bracelet in the Seniors 2019.

Down to 20,000 or so, Hellmuth's last hand was a three-way pot. An early position player limped for 1,200, Hellmuth made it 6,000 to go and was called by the limper and button Halfon.

Flop: {3-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}. Check to Hellmuth who moved all in. Halfon called, and the third player folded.

Halfon: {6-Spades}{7-Spades} for top pair.
Hellmuth: {k-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}, an overcard, flush draw and straightening potential.

Nothing came to improve Hellmuth's hand on the {9-Spades}{2-Clubs} turn and river and he was up and off in moments.

Heimiller Pairs Up

Nível 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Dan Heimiller
Dan Heimiller

Dan Heimiller limped from the hijack, and the button and both blinds came along. The flop came {10-Spades}{8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}, and the action checked through all four players.

On the {5-Diamonds} turn, the blinds checked and Heimiller led out for 2,000, and got calls from the button and small blind. The river came the {3-Diamonds}, and the action checked to to the button, who fired for 5,500 chips. The big blind folded, and Heimiller took a minute before putting in the call.

"Good call," said the player on the button, as Heimiller showed {k-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} for top pair. The two-time bracelet winner is now up to 55,000 chips.

Main Event Champs in the Field

Nível 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Joe Hachem
Joe Hachem

The WSOP Main Event champions from 2004 and 2005 are both in field, as Greg Raymer (2004) is up to 34,000 at last count, and Joe Hachem (2005) has almost tripled the starting stack and stands at 55,000.

Hachem took home a $7.5 million first-place prize in 2005, and has more than $12 million in career tournament earnings. Other big cashes for Hachem include a win at the 2006 WPT Doyle Brunson North American Poker Classic ($2,207,575), second place in the $2,500 Short Handed No-Limit Hold'em event at the 2006 WSOP ($256,800), second in the $5,000 Main Event in the 2011 Big Event in Los Angeles ($300,000), and third in the 2012 Aussie Millions $100,000 Poker Challenge ($339,726).

Phillips Still Going Strong

Nível 3 : 100/200, 200 ante
Dennis Phillips
Dennis Phillips

Dennis Phillips has been spotted among the masses in the Pavilion Room, and he's up to 27,000 chips in the early stages of this event. Phillips is best known for his runner-up finish to Peter Eastgate in the 2008 WSOP Main Event, and his deep run to a 45th-place finish in the Main Event the following year.

The man with the trademark St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap has also had incredible success as a WSOP senior, finishing second in the 2012 $1,000 Seniors No-Limit Championship for $372,895, and fifth in the 2014 edition of the event for $153,883.

Phillips scored a $4,517,773 payday as the 2008 Main Event runner-up, but he has more than $6 million in career earnings. A good portion of those non-Main Event winnings have come in the seniors events, and perhaps he'll add to that total with a deep run in 2019.

O'Kearney Makes a Flush Against Bull

Nível 3 : 100/200, 200 ante
Cards
Cards

Just before the break, Irish online satellite wiz and Chip Race podcast maestro Dara O'Kearney bumped his stack up to 28,000 in a hand that started three-way and ended with Robert Bull running two pair into a flush. Action started slowly, with a check-round on the {6-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{a-Spades} flop.

On the {4-Clubs} turn, Kevin Smith check-folded to O'Kearney's 1,000 bet (small blind and big blind respectively), while Bull made the call. The river brought the {8-Hearts} and another lead from O'Kearney, this time for 3,000. Bull called, announcing, "Two pair," again, but O'Kearney's {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts} flush won the hand.

O'Kearney, bedecked in an elaborately floral shirt, has only recently qualified age-wise for the Seniors event and is already stacking chips in the aptly-named Silver Section of the Brasilia room.

Bracelets and Hall of Fame Entries Dot the Field

You never know what sort of line-up a start of day table draw will give you. Sometimes the Seniors event can seat a first-time WSOP player next to bracelet winners and formidable high stakes greats of the game.

Tom McEvoy is currently playing on a table full of gregarious characters in the corner of Brasilia. The author, player and member of the Poker Hall of Fame is certainly one of the tough spots. The winner of the WSOP Main Event in 1983, McEvoy has won a total of four bracelets to date and is looking for a fifth this week.
