Ajay Chabra Leads Final Table in Event #13: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw

The trend for bumper fields at the 2019 WSOP was reflected in that of Event #13: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw. Day 2 saw 63 out of a field of 296 – the largest ever for a $1,500 buy-in event of this game variant at the WSOP – return to the felt to play down to a final table.

The bubble burst when Rep Porter ran into the nut hand of Jerry Wong and finished in 46th position, guaranteeing all other players a payout of at least $2,242. Wong never looked back and returns tomorrow with over 600,000 chips.

Tomorrow’s line-up sees Ajay Chabra in pole position with a huge 1,031,000 in chips, nearly double the stack of the next highest-bagging player. Chabra built chips throughout the day, including in the most memorable hand of the event so far – a monster bluff against Wong (see Featured Post).

  • 3rd - $39,986
  • 4th - $27,477
  • 5th - $19,313
  • 6th - $13,892

Exiting in the money today were Ryan Riess (20th), Galen Hall (12th), Daniel Negreanu (29th), 2018 WSOP Player of the Year Shaun Deeb (16th) and Jennifer Harman (18th). Harman already holds a bracelet in NL 2-7 Lowball Draw which she won in 2000 after famously learning the game from Howard Lederer five minutes before playing.

The final table bubble spot fell to Frank Kassela, another prior Deuce to Seven bracelet winner, who had kept up a constant stream of banter with whomever was at his table throughout the day. Making the seven-handed final table but just missing out on the live stream appearance (and shot at the bracelet and $96,278 top prize) was Craig Chait who takes home $10,232.

Play resumes at 2pm Thursday and will be blogged in real time right here.

Craig Chait Eliminated in 7th Place ($10,232)

Nível 21 : 5,000/10,000, 15,000 ante
Craig Chait
Craig Chait

Action kicked off with a cutoff raise from Jerry Wong (22,000). Ajay Chabra three-bet yet again, this time to 95,000, in the small blind. Big blind Craig Chait then moved all in for 190,000 total, Wong got out of the way and there was still a decision to be made. Chabra patted and Chait tanked a little, the table holding their collective breath. Eventually he chose to break his hand.

Chait showed {9-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{2-Diamonds}. The bad news was that Chabra’s {9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{5-Spades}{2-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} had him drawing dead and his final {6-Hearts} an irrelevance.

With that, the six-handed final is set for a 2pm start tomorrow. Stay tuned for an end-of-day recap and chip count and seating information.

Monster Bluff Propels Chabra to Chip Lead

Nível 21 : 5,000/10,000, 15,000 ante
Ajay Chabra
Ajay Chabra

Jerry Wong made it 22,000 under the gun, Ajay Chabra re-raised to 66,000 from the hijack, and Wong called. Wong drew one and Chabra stood pat.

Wong cut out 120,000 and led out with a big bet. Chabra paused for over a minute, during which he asked Wong how much he had behind. It was just over 500,000. Chabra then announced he was all in for about 550,000 total.

Now Wong went into the tank in what could escalate into a pot worth nearly half of all chips in play, should he pull the call. The whole Miranda room was completely silent while Wong contemplated his decision.

Ultimately, he folded, saying, "Now you have a chance to rub it in my face."

"You really want to see it?" Chabra asked.

"Yes."

Chabra took his hand and slammed it face up towards the middle of the table, showing {7-}{7-}{7-}{6-}{3-} for a perfectly executed bluff which helped him to regain the chip lead.

Jameson Painter Eliminated in 9th Place ($5,974)

Nível 20 : 4,000/8,000, 12,000 ante
Jameson Painter
Jameson Painter

A hand described by Craig Chait as "brutal" has put a sudden halt to Jameson Painter's bracelet hopes in this event. Painter raised to 18,000, called by Ajay Chabra. Painter drew two cards, Ajay one. Painter, with the shortest stack of the final nine, was all in and quickly called.

Painter: {8-}{7-}{6-}{4-}{2-}
Chabra: {7-}{6-}{5-}{3-}{2-}

Chabra's two cards from the draw were good ones, but Chabra's was a great one.

Chait Beats Tabb with "Ten Nine Seven Six Smooth"

Nível 18 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Craig Chait
Craig Chait

Craig Chait raised in the cutoff to 12,000 called by small blind Steven Tabb. Both players drew one card, then Tabb led out for 18,000. Chait made the call.

"Ten," said Tabb, showing {10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}.
"Ten what?" asked Chait (the light is such that glare makes is hard for him to see certain parts of the table)
"Ten nine," said Tabb.
"Ten nine what?"
"Ten nine seven."
"Ten nine seven what?"
"Ten nine seven six."

It came down to Tabb's {4-} and Chait's {2-} fifth cards to decide the pot. Next table over Frank Kassela said, "Ten nine seven six smooth..." to which Chait replied, "The smoothest."

Tabb Keeps Piling

Nível 17 : 2,000/4,000, 6,000 ante
Steven Tabb
Steven Tabb

Steven Tabb has been leading the tournament for quite some time and he shows no signs of allowing other players to take the pole position.

Tabb just added another chunk to his stack after he three-bet to 41,000 from the small blind versus Yosuke Iwata's 10,000-raise from the cutoff. Iwata called and both players stood pat.

Tabb led out what looked like 55,000 and Iwata spent over a minute before making his move. Then he laid his hand down.

Tabb Makes a Great Pat to Bust Deeb

Nível 16 : 1,500/3,000, 4,500 ante
Shaun Deeb
Shaun Deeb

Steven Tabb raised to 9,000 on the button and Shaun Deeb jammed for 67,600 from the big blind. Tabb asked for a count and called after a minute or so. Deeb stood pat and Tabb did as well.

"You got me," Deeb said, rolling over {j-}{9-}{8-}{6-}{2-}. Tabb indeed did well by not breaking his hand as he started with {9-}{7-}{6-}{4-}{3-}.

The 2018 WSOP Player of the Year was eliminated in 16th place while Tabb boosted his gigantic stack to the neighborhood of 390,000.

Gathy Keeps Torturing His Oponnents

Nível 13 : 800/1,600, 2,400 ante
Michael Gathy
Michael Gathy

Michael Gathy was among the big stacks for the better part of Day 1 and the three-time bracelet winner has kept his foot firmly on the pedal today. Gathy, who came back third in chips, has more than doubled his belongings through the first two hours and change.

Gathy was just seen scooping another pot when he called a 5,500-raise from Joseph Ranciato. Gathy was on the button, drawing one after Ranciato had done the same. Ranciato led out 8,000, but Gathy fired back with a raise to 35,000. Ranciato laid his hand down and Gathy stacked his new chips, improving to 230,000.

Rep Porter Bubbles the $1,500 NL 2-7 Lowball Draw

Nível 12 : 600/1,200, 1,800 ante
Rep Porter
Rep Porter

After a handful of hands that brought no significant action, the deadlock has been finally broken with the elimination of Rep Porter in 46th place. The crucial hand started with Jerry Wong raising to 3,000. Porter called from the big blind and both players discarded one.

All in and a call followed and Porter's nine-low was no match to Wong's {7-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-} nuts. Wong is among the tournament top stacks with over 160,000 in chips.

While Porter left the Miranda Room as the bubble boy, the 45 remaining players have locked up $2,242 and some POY points.

Tabb Leads Stacked Field into Day 2

Steven Tabb
Steven Tabb

Only 63 players made it through the first ten levels of Event #13: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw, and the remaining field returns on Wednesday, June 5, at 2 p.m. local time to continue their quest for a WSOP bracelet. The record-breaking 296-strong tournament drew many famous players and some of them bagged up big stacks last night.

Nobody has locked up anything yet, though, with the $399,600 prize pool divided between the top 45 positions. Minimum cash is worth $2,242 and the eventual bracelet winner will pocket $96,278.

So far, Steven Tabb holds the pole position, thanks to his strong finish in the final level of Day 1. Tabb has accumulated 185,400 chips and he built a decent bridge between his top stack and the rest of the field.

However, the names that follow on the leaderboard guarantee that Tabb won't take anything for granted in the next phase of the tournament. Second in chips is none other than former champion Frank Kassela who conquered the $1,500 NL 2-7 Lowball Draw two years ago.

With Michael Gathy, Jon Turner, and Shaun Deeb also in the top five, the tournament promises some fine battles on Day 2. Another player who showed his prowess yesterday was defending champ Daniel Ospina who sits in 15th place. Ospina presented himself with an aggressive style and he'll surely try to capitalize on his experience from the 2018 title-winning campaign.

The are tons of other experienced players in the remaining field, including a select few who have their posters hanging on the walls around the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. That should be a strong incentive to follow the live PokerNews updates from the tournament as the NL 2-7 Lowball Draw is down to the last nine tables. Come back at 2 p.m. to find out which players will be on their way to the final table.
