Bertrand Grospellier Leads Day 1a in Event #75: $1,500 The Closer No-Limit Hold'em (30 minute levels) - $1 Million Guarantee

Day 1a of the new Event #75: $1,500 The Closer No-Limit Hold'em (30-minute levels) - $1 Million Guarantee ended. After 18 levels of play, only 54 of the starting 502 remain in contention for the title.

Bertrand ‘Elky’ Grospellier leads the way with around 40 starting stacks in this turbo format with 583,000, and he is joined by Nelson Resendiz (401,000), Marius Kupzmanas (392,000) and Leif Force (298,000), the 2012 champion of event #3 3,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em / Pot-Limit Omaha amongst others who bagged above average stacks.

With total live earnings of $3,785,320 in WSOP events and a bracelet earned in the $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship in 2011, Grospellier will be a serious competitor in the hunt for a second gold bracelet.

One competitor in the field who has already accomplished this feat is Kristen Bicknell, though the two-time bracelet winner will be returning as one of the shorter stacks with 26,000 in chips.

With 76 players making the money, the bubble burst shortly after the last break of the day. Some of the players to narrowly miss out on a $2,243 min-cash included the 2017 WSOP Player of the Year Chris Ferguson and two-time bracelet winner Ryan Hughes.

Players who cashed for the minimum included Matt Stout, Kelly Minkin, Ari Engel, Ian Steinman and Mike Leah. The Canadian player was multi-tabling between this event and Event #76: $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. and came back right at the bubble with a short stack of 11,000 chips left. Leah managed to survive to the bubble with half a small blind to catch his eleventh cash of the series.

Some of the players who took their chance in this event but without success were Kenny Hallaert, Jared Hamby, Connor Drinan, Christian Harder, Jesse Sylvia, Jimmy Guerrero, Phil Laak, Maria Lampropulos, three-time bracelet winner Phil Galfond, Ryan Laplante, Sorel Mizzi and many more.

Two more starting flights are scheduled for this event, with Day 2 starting Sunday, July 15, at 12pm. The remaining players will play down to a winner with a 15-minute break every four levels and a dinner break prior to the final table.

Matt Stout Out

Nível 18 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Matt Stout
Matt Stout

A player raised to 12,000 and Matt Stout announced all in from the button. It folded back to his opponent who quickly called.

Holding {j-Spades}{k-Clubs}, Stout had to win the flip against {9-Spades}{9-Hearts} for his opponent, but the board brought him no help with {8-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{10-Spades} and Stout made his way to the cashier.

Force On the Rise

Nível 16 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Leif Force
Leif Force

Leif Force opened and the big blind defended. The flop came {5-Spades}{10-Hearts}{5-Hearts} and went check-check.

On the turn {j-Diamonds}, Leif bet 5,000 after his opponent checked and Force thought about it for a minute before calling.

Things heated up on the river {j-Clubs}. After another check from his opponent, Force announced all in. The big blind player chose to call with a stack around 50,000 with {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds} but mucked his hand when he saw {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades} in Force's hand for a better pair.

Force has now a massive stack of more than 300,000.

Raina Sends One to the Rail

Nível 15 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Gaurav Raina
Gaurav Raina

A player moved all in from the middle position for a stack around 19,000 and Gaurav Raina reshoved. The other players folded and both players tabled their cards:

Gaurav Raina: {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}
Opponent: {4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}

Raina's opponent was in bad shape for a double-up and the board {10-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} brought him no help. Raina, who won the $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em last year, now has a stack of around 44,000.

Lampropulos Takes a Seat and Doubles Up

Nível 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Maria Lampropulos
Maria Lampropulos

Tom von Bergen started the action with a raise to 2,200 from the under the gun position and Maria Lampropulos moved all in in the small blind for 16,500. Von Bergen quickly called to create the following showdown:

Maria Lampropulos: {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Tom von Bergen: {2-Diamonds}{2-Spades}

It was a typical flip situation and the {a-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{j-Spades}{5-Spades} gave two pair to Lampropulos as well as the double up.

Minkin Deuces Create Some Table Talk

Nível 9 : 300/600, 100 ante
Kelly Minkin
Kelly Minkin

On a flop reading {9-Hearts}{3-Spades}{10-Spades}, some chips were already in the middle when Kelly Minkin fired a bet around 7,000, putting her opponent at risk. The latter snap-called and tabled {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}. Minkin, holding {2-Clubs}{2-Spades}, was in bad shape to win the hand.

"What are you doing?! Deuces?" said Minkin's opponent. "I'm giving you chips I thought you would be happy about it and not berate me" responded Minkin. "I'm not really, but I like and also don't like taking chips from women". "Ok, now I will have to bust you" said Minkin, ending the conversation.

Minkin lost the hand after {a-Spades} fell on the turn and a {7-Clubs} on the river but still has a comfortable stack.

Alex Foxen (picture from a previous event)

Alex Foxen re-entered the tournament and already built a stack of 42,000 thanks to a huge pot.

A first player opened to 750 and Alex Foxen raised it to 2,400. It came back to the initial raiser who opted to call.

The flop came {4-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and Foxen bet 2,600 after his opponent checked. The latter considered it for a minute and made the call. The turn brought a {7-Clubs} and Foxen's opponent led a bet for 3,000. Foxen made the call.

The river brought a {3-Spades} and Foxen moved all in after his opponent checked, putting the latter at risk for his tournament. Foxen got called and showed {a-Clubs}{a-Spades} for a set of aces. His opponent, holding {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}, made his way to the exit.
