Nick Petrangelo Leads Final 10 in $100,000 High Roller

Nick Petrangelo will take the chip lead into the penultimate day of Event #5: $100,000 No-Limit Hold'em High Roller after bagging up a stack of 13,460,000. Petrangelo is one of five bracelet winners remaining, and will be looking to add to the bracelet he won in 2015 in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout event.

Petrangelo amassed most of his chips with the double elimination of Paul Volpe and Steffen Sontheimer. Volpe held pocket kings and Sontheimer ace-four, but they were no match for the pocket aces of Petrangelo who sent them both to the rail shortly after the money was reached.

Start of day chip leader Elio Fox will also be taking a healthy stack of 10,180,000 through to Day 3, as will Stephen Chidwick who bagged 7,065,000.

The day started with just 49 players plus a few Day 2 entries and re-entries. Among the early eliminations were Tobias Ziegler, Talal Shakerchi, Dominik Nitsche, David Peters, Isaac Haxton, Jonathan LIttle, Igor Kurganov, David Einhorn, Mikita Badziakouski and Rainer Kempe.

By the end of late registration, the total number of entrants had reached 105, which included re-entries from Badziakouski and Kempe. The very last player to enter was a certain ten-time bracelet winner named Phil Ivey. Ivey, whose last bracelet came back in 2014, attracted a large rail all wanting to catch a glimpse of the legend in action.

However, those hoping for a deep run from Ivey were left disappointed after he ran pocket sevens into the king-nine of Chidwick, only for the Brit to backdoor a straight to send Ivey to the rail.

Once registration was closed, the payouts were confirmed, with a total of 16 places being paid. A min-cash was worth $155,378 and the top prize a whopping $2,910,277. In fact, the top three payouts in this tournament are all seven figures.

Fox managed to hold onto his chip lead throughout most of the early part of today's play. Eventually, he encountered resistance from Chidwick - who, in addition to Ivey, eliminated Manig Loeser. Fedor Holz also briefly bumped Fox from the top of the chip counts after a massive five-bet pot against Jan-Eric Schwippert. Holz's pocket queens held against his opponent's nines and Schwippert was sent to the rail.

Fox, Chidwick and Holz were the only three players over six million as play continued around three tables, with one table being played on the feature table in Brasilia and broadcast live on Twitch.

Seth Davies, Cary Katz and Johannes Becker were all eliminated shortly before the dinner break, with 20 players returning just four places off the money. Brian Rast had been left with just over three big blinds and he fell at the hands of Jason Mercier, with Tom Marchese and Ryan Riess also falling agonizingly short.

The unfortunate bubble boy was Jake Schindler, who got ace-nine in against the ace-jack of Volpe, whose hand held up and what could have been a lengthy bubble was burst in less than five hands.

The two-table redraw occurred with Fox still in the lead and Chidwick breathing down his neck. Holz had fallen back somewhat, and third in the chip counts was Petrangelo, who would then eliminate Volpe and Sontheimer in the money in the same hand to move into the chip lead.

Mercier and Michael Rosenfeld were eliminated in 14th & 13th place respectively, and each received $174,190. Thomas Muehloecker was unfortunate to bust in 12th for $201,494 after his pocket tens were cracked by the sixes of Jason Koon, with Koon turning a straight to eliminate the Austrian.

Christoph Vogelsang became the final bust out of the day with the German's ace-king unable to win a race against the pocket eights of Fox and Vogelsang exited in 11th place for a $201,494 payday.

Christoph Vogelsang

Elio Fox raised to 180,000 from the cutoff and Jason Koon called from the small blind. Christoph Vogelsang three-bet to 1,200,000 from the big blind, leaving himself with just over 100,000 remaining. Fox just called and Koon quickly mucked his hand.

On the flop of {q-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{6-Spades} Vogelsang and Fox got the rest of the chips in the middle and the cards were face up. Vogelsang held {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts} while Fox had the only current pair with {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}. The turn was the {10-Spades} and the river brought the {4-Hearts}. Vogelsang was unable to connect with the board and was eliminated in 11th place.
