Smith Over Merson

Nível 6 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Dan Smith and Greg Merson took a flop of {5-Spades}{6-Hearts}{8-Hearts} and Smith came out firing with a bet of 100,000. Merson cut out a raise to 240,000 and Smith flatted to see a turn.

The dealer produced the {5-Hearts} on the turn, pairing the board. Smith checked to the raiser and Merson elected to check the action back. Fifth street brought the {J-Diamonds} to the felt and Smith checked for a second time. Merson quickly rapped the table back and Smith threw {J-Spades}{J-Clubs} on the table for jacks full of fives.

"Wow," remarked Scott Seiver from the other end of the table.

Merson's cards were pulled into the muck and and Smith was pushed the pot. He's now sitting around 1.505 million while Merson has dropped to 3.215 million.

Red Rockets

Nível 6 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Bill Klein raised to 55,000 from under the gun, Isaac Haxton called on the button, and Rick Salomon defended his big blind. The flop fell {q-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{a-Spades}, Saloman checked, and Klein continued for 110,000. Only Salomon called.

The turn was the {9-Diamonds} - there's always a nine - and both players checked. The {5-Clubs} completed the board, and Salomon check-called a bet of 225,000 from Klein, who turned over {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}.

Salomon chuckled, then chucked his cards into the muck.

Esfandiari Picks Off Steven with Ace High

Nível 6 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

Brandon Steven checked the {9-Hearts}{8-Spades}{3-Diamonds} flop, and Antonio Esfandiari bet 51,000. Steven check-raised to 131,000, and Esfandiari called to see the {3-Spades} pair the board on the turn. Steven bet 137,000, and Esfandiari called.

The dealer landed the {4-Spades} on the river, and Steven bet 220,000. After a brief tank, Esfandiari called.

"King high," announced Steven.

Esfandiari quickly turned over the {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} for ace high, and Steven mucked his hand without showing.

With that pot, Esfandiari moved to 3.3 million, while Steven dropped back to 2.975 million. The full counts from the table are listed below.

River Value For Gregg

Nível 6 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

The board read {A-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} when Tony Gregg bet 122,000 after Daniel Cates had checked. Cates tanked for a while and eventually he made the call.

The river was the {Q-Spades} and Cates checked right away after which Gregg bet 188,000.

Cates talked a whole bunch about how unlucky the river was and how he couldn't believe what was going on. After about three minutes he finally called and Gregg tabled {A-Spades}{K-Spades}.

Cates couldn't beat that and mucked his cards.

Gruissem Straightens Out Rast

Nível 6 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Brian Rast opened to 38,000 from late position and Jean-Robert Bellande flatted from the cutoff. Action folded to Philipp Gruissem who tagged along in the big blind. The trio saw {9-Hearts}{J-Spades}{10-Diamonds} hit the felt and Gruissem checked. Rast continued for 54,000, allowing Bellande to get out of the way. Gruissem called.

The turn was the {7-Hearts} and Gruissem led at the pot for 110,000. Rast called and the {3-Clubs} finished off the board. Gruissem cut out one final bet of 260,000. Rast sat shuffling chips while pondering his action. Roughly 90 seconds passed before Rast dropped out a call.

Gruissem tabled {J-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for a straight, eliciting a shrug from Rast. He mucked his cards and Gruissem scooped up the pot, bringing him back over the two-million mark.

Straight for Drinan

Nível 5 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante

Connor Drinan raised to 36,000 from under the gun, Antonio Esfandiari called on the button, and Scott Seiver defended his big blind.

The dealer fanned {8-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{6-Clubs}, the action checked to Esfandiari, and he bet 58,000. Both Seiver and Drinan called.

The turn was the {7-Clubs}, the same action occurred - this time Esfandiari's bet was 79,000 - and the river was a {2-}. All three players checked.

Seiver showed {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs} for a pair of jacks, Drinan turned over {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} for a straight, and Esfandiari mucked.

Weird Things Happening

Nível 5 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Philipp Gruissem
Philipp Gruissem

On the final board of {J-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{A-Spades}, Philipp Gruissem and John Juanda were in action. Gruissem checked, and Juanda fired 220,000. This all seemed like an innocent river bet, but then things got a little funky.

Gruissem put out 350,000 with one lavender T250,000 chip and one canary T100,000 chip. Gruissem looked confused when the dealer questioned what his action was. It was ruled that Gruissem had to raise to the minimum of 440,000, so he then did so. Then action went back to Juanda, and he thought for a little bit. Eventually, Juanda reraised to 930,000.

This sent Gruissem into the tank. He talked a little bit out loud and made it clear that he didn't know if Juanda was reraising because he thought Gruissem only meant to call and messed up, or that he actually had a hand.

"I can beat pocket sixes," Gruissem said at one point.

"Man, there are some really weird hands being played in this tournament," said Brian Rast from the other side of the table.

After several long minutes, Gruissem folded. Juanda asked him if he had meant to raise, and Gruissem stated that he meant to make it 600,000, but made an error. Juanda then said he meant to reraise to 880,000, but actually made it 50,000 more than that.

Gruissem was open that he could beat a set of sixes, and Juanda was open that he thought Gruissem intended to raise, but just put out the wrong amount. Either way, Juanda won the pot.

After the hand, the players at the table began a discussion about the chips in the event, saying that it's easy to mess up bets with the bigger chips involved that they aren't used to.
