Who Will Be the Spring Poker Main Event High Champion?

2023 SCOOP Main Event - High
2023 SCOOP Main Event - High

The 2023 edition of the iconic Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) from PokerStars is coming to a close with the Main Event games about to begin. As is the tradition with SCOOP events, there are actually three Main Events for the series with different buy-ins.

The deepest pockets will be playing SCOOP 108-H, the biggest version of the Main Event. The action for the Main kicks off at 12:30 pm ET and there are 15 levels of play scheduled for Day 1 action. There is $5 million guaranteed in the prize pool, and with 116 entries in the game a couple of hours before cards go in the air, there is still some distance to go before the guarantee is covered.

Once they complete 15 levels today, they'll put the virtual chips in virtual bags for the night to resume at 12:35 pm ET on May 29. There are three reentries available to players who lose their chips on the first day. Late entries are open throughout the opening day of play with players able to jump into the action as late as the start of Day 2 play on Monday.

As is unsurprising for a $10k, there are quite a few familiar names in the field already even before the action starts. There are two Red Spades on the players' list waiting for the game to begin, Sam "SamSquid" Grafton and Lex "L.Veldhuis" Veldhuis along with a host of other recognizable handles in the list.

In early action on a table that includes Sam "SamSquid" Grafton and Lex "L.Veldhuis" Veldhuis, Mario "t4t0PAGAU" Navarro just took a decent early pot of about 22 big blinds.

"NY17PATS14" opened under the gun to 2,500 and "J7RJunior" called from the button as did Navarro from the big blind. It checked to Navarro on the J48 flop and he led out for 4,500 and both players called.

It checked through the 83 turn and river with Navarro showing down 109 for the rivered flush and the win.

"Qee... :)AA" is nearing 300k in the first level of play after a big hand against Talal "raidalot" Shakerchi. "Qee... :)AA" raised under the gun to 2,000 and Shakerchi called from the button. Shakerchi raised a bet of 1,820 on the 543 flop and got the call.

The turn 4 went check-call for 15,898 and the river J saw another check-call from "Qee... :)AA" for 37,201. It was a gross cooler when the hands were revealed with a flopped nut straight falling to the turned boat:

Veldhuis Powers the Pot

There weren't any cards to be seen on the hand, but Lex "L.Veldhuis" Veldhuis just took a nice pot. Fellow PokerStars Team Pro member Sam "SamSquid" Grafton opened early to 3k before Veldhuis repopped it to 13.8k from the small blind.

Big blind "LuckPROF" was having none of that, however, reraising it to 29.4k. That pushed Grafton out, but sent Veldhuis into the tank for a bit before he five-bet shoved for 179k and change. The big blind got out of the way, and Veldhuis picked up a nice pot of dead money with no cards on the board.

"J7RJunior" opened to 3,200 from the hijack before Mario "t4t0PAGAU" Navarro three-bet the button to 10,500. There was a four0bet to 35,000 and a call before the flop of 84J.

"J7RJunior" fired 32,550 and Navarro flatted to the A turn. They both checked to the 5 river where "J7RJunior" checked again, then tank-folded to a shove of almost 184k into a pot of about 139k.

Ignat Takes from Veldhuis before Break

Shortly before the second break of the day, Liviu "0Human0" Ignat jumped above 400k with a turned two pair against Team Pro member Lex "L.Veldhuis" Veldhuis. Velduis opened under the gun to 3,080 and Sam "SamSquid" Grafton called from the cutoff, as did Ignat from the big blind.

Ignat checked the 3K9 flop and Veldhuis bet 3,742 and got two calls to the 4 turn. They all checked to the 6 river where Ignat fired an over-pot bet of 30,800. Only Veldhuis called, but he mucked when Ignat showed four-three.

Attached is also the top five counts from the second break of the day with 273 entries now.
