Second Starting Flight of PokerNews Cup Kicks Off at 11 AM

Giovanni Zanette
Giovanni Zanette

Welcome to Day 1b of the PokerNews Cup, which kicks off at 11 a.m. local time inside the Golden Nugget, Las Vegas.

A fresh batch of hopefuls and some returning ones will battle it to book their place in Day 2 of the PokerNews Cup, which runs as a Mystery Bounty and features a $1,000,000 guarantee.

Day 1a was well attended, with 504 entries tallied. Of those, just 63 advanced to the next stage.

The United Kingdom's Anthony Kennedy bagged best from Day 1a, ending up with a stack of 697,000.

Pedro Ingles (676,000) and Vid Zagar (668,000) round out the top three chip counts while notable names such as Ronnie Day and Ronnie Bardah also made it over the first hurdle.

Last night's unfortunate bubble boy was South African Giovanni Zanette (pictured), who had to take two twelve hours flights to make it to Sin City.

He got his stack in with a huge combo draw but bricked out to miss out on making the money.

Starting Flight Details

For the $1,100 buy-in, players will receive a 30,000 stack. To make it through to Day 2, entrants must finish in the final 12.5% of the Day 1 fields.

There will be a 15-minute break after every three levels, with a 60-minute dinner break scheduled after Level 9. All levels until the final table will have a 40-minute duration.

Late registration closes upon the start of Level 13, which will be around 9 p.m. local time.

Players may register for Day 1a, and/or Day 1b, and/or Day 1c. If a player entered any starting flight and has been eliminated from the tournament, they may register for any subsequent starting flights.

Players should note that seating may be limited for this event.

A player who advances to Day 2 is prohibited from entering a subsequent starting flight. A player that has advanced to Day 2 who enters another starting flight in error will be disqualified from the subsequent flight and will not be entitled to a refund of their second tournament buy-in. The player will be permitted to play Day 2 with their tournament chip stack from their original starting flight.

Eric Benhamron (left)
Eric Benhamron (left)

Eric Benhamron opened from middle position before the button made it 1,100. The small blind called, and Matthias De Clercq did the same from the big blind.

Benhamron then four-bet to 5,500, prompting the button to click to 13,600. The small blind, unaware of the five-bet, put in 5,500, which he then surrendered. De Clerq also folded.

Benhamron then moved all in for 29,100 and was snap-called by the button with a slightly bigger stack.

Eric Benhamron: AA
Button: AK

The button had a gutshot to Brodway following the J102 flop and picked up some extra outs on the K turn. The 7 river was a brick, and Benhamron scooped an early double.

Flopped Boats are Cursed in PokerNews Cup

Nível 4 : Blinds 200/400, 400 ante
Harrison Ashdown
Harrison Ashdown

Gloria Vallejo opened to 1,100 from middle position and was called by Harrison Ashdown from the big blind.

The A44 flop checked through to the 8 turn. Ashdown bet 1,400 and was called.

Sparks then began to ignite on the 9 river. Ashdown checked and Vallejo fired out 3,500. Ashdown made it 20,000 and then faced a jam for 32,900.

Ashdown went deep into the tank, listing the hands that beat him as well as the hands that he beat.

He began counting out his stack and called.

Vallejo tabled 99 for a rivered full house of nines full of fours. Ashdown looked sickened as he had the A4 for fours full of aces, and sent his hand into the muck.

The hand is similar to a pot played between Spencer Hudson and Oliver Bunting yesterday. Hudson's flopped jacks full of kings against Bunting's aces. However, a third king on the river gave Bunting a superior full house.
