Kennedy Leads The 63 Survivors Of The Massive Day 1a In The PokerNews Cup

Nível 18 : Blinds 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Anthony Kennedy
Anthony Kennedy

The $1,100 PokerNews Cup Mystery Bounty saw the first of three flights conclude today. A total of 507 players came out to play this event which saw only 63 players make it to the end of the day. Last year’s flight got 183 entrants, and with this near-tripling of the turnout, we could see the $1,000,000 guarantee get hit sooner than anticipated.

Leading the way is Anthony Kennedy, who ended their day with 697,000. Kennedy is enjoying his first hendon mob cash in the United States as many of his cashes are from the United Kingdom and Ireland. He holds $282,939 in lifetime earnings and looks to make this run a top career score. The only others to bag over 600,000 are Pedro Ingles (676,000), and Vid Zagar (668,000), each looking to add to their own resumes.

Play ended with 32:00 left on the clock in Level 18, with blinds at 5,000/10,000. The 63 players will come back to this level along with the other two flights on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. unless one of the following flights ends earlier.

Giovanni Zanette
Giovanni Zanette

Giovanni Zanette opened to 20,000 from early position and was called by James Budelier from the small blind.

Budelier checked on the 543 flop, prompting Zanette to fire for 60,000, leaving just 24,000 behind. Budelier jammed as the big stack and Zanette called for his tournament life.

"I have a lot of outs," said Zanette as the cards were tabled.

Giovanni Zanette: 86
James Budelier: 99

Budelier was ahead with his overpair but Zanette was alive with his open-ended straight draw and flush draw.

The 10 turn kept Budelier ahead and the Q river confirmed Zanette's exit as the bubble boy.

Day 1a has now closed with 63 players advancing through to Day 2.

The under-the-gun player limped in before Justin Chock made it 18,000 from middle position. Bhavin Khatri, who was once a big stack, jammed for just 25,000 on his direct left. Action folded to Qingwei Meng in the big blind who clicked it to 50,000.

The under-the-gun player folded and Chock went deep into the tank before folding QQ face up.

He soon had a look of relief on his face as Meng and Khatri tabled their cards.

Bhavin Khatri: 33
Qingwei Meng: AA

Chock had pulled off a great escape folding his pocket queens but regret soon appeared as the flop came with the Q102. The 89 turn and river confirmed Khatri's exit and Meng chipped up.

Dipanjan Chattopadhyay
Dipanjan Chattopadhyay

Dipanjan Chattopadhyay opened to 6,000 from the button and the big blind called.

The 1087 flop checked through to the 10 turn and the big blind led out for 5,000, which was called.

The big blind then sized up to 20,000 on the 2 river. Chattopadhyay pondered over the spot before flicking in the call.

The big blind tabled Q9x for queen-high.

Chattopadhyay then turned over his KJ for just king-high, but it was enough to scoop in the pot.

The big blind appeared frustrated about the hero call, but Chattopadhyay took in the chips to become one of the biggest stacks in the room.

Day 1a will close when 63 players remain.

It's also looking like the $1,000,000 guarantee will be obliterated as $488,880 has been collected with Day 1b and 1c still to play.

Miles Doubles Through Oppenheim

Nível 12 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Tony Miles
Tony Miles

Tony Miles opened to 5,000 from the cutoff and David Oppenheim called from the big blind.

The J83 flop checked through to the J turn. Oppenheim bet 5,000 and Miles called.

Oppenheim checked the A river, prompting Miles to jam for 20,000.

"You won't believe my hand," chimed Oppenheim as he deliberated. He then inferred that he should've just jammed preflop.

After some thinking time, Oppenheim called while mentioning on the lines that if Miles caught the ace it would be sick.

As Oppenheim's chips went in, Miles declared he had an ace and tabled his A4.

Oppenheim mucked his hand, but one of their tablemates requested the hand be turned over as it was an 'all-in and call.'

Oppenheim showed KK for a no good pair of kings and they returned to the muck for a second time.
