Irishman Simon Wilson Bags Big as 109 Players Survive Day 2 of Irish Open Main Event

Nível 22 : Blinds 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante

An eventful day at the Royal Dublin Society saw the 743 players, out of 3,233 total entries, who started Day 2 of the €1,150 Irish Open Main Event be whittled down to just 109 survivors. They have secured themselves a cut of at least €4,720 from the €3,152,175 prize pool, but all eyes are on the gargantuan top prize of €415,615 which comes with winning the tournament.

Leading them is the relatively unknown Greek player Konstantinos Vatseris with 3,215,000 chips, good for 129 big blinds at the start of Day 3, but Ireland's best performer was Simon Wilson, who occupies the second place on the leaderboard with 2,710,000 in chips.

Wilson, a regular on the European circuit, got most of his chips in a crazy three-way all-in in the later stages of Day 2. He finished fifth in the €3,000 High Roller at the Irish Open last year and will be looking for his second final table in two years in this year's Main Event.

Meanwhile, Georgios Tsouloftas rounds out the podium with a stack of 2,400,000 chips, while online phenom Conor Beresford (1,990,000) also managed to bag big. Much to the delight of the home crowd, Wilson's fellow countrymen Aidan Quinlan (2,340,000) and Robert Shanley (1,840,000) also secured a spot in the top ten.

Day 2 Action

However, long before the aforementioned players booked their tickets for Day 3, the bubble still had to burst. Of the 743 starting players, only 479 would see a payday of at least €1,173. Many notables would fall before that point and left home empty-handed, including many of the Irish Open sponsors' delegations. PokerStars' Parker Talbot, Georgina James, Benjamin Spragg, and Felix Schneiders all failed to make the money, as did Paddy Power Poker's Conor O'Driscoll.

Other notables who missed out on the money include bracelet winners Benny Glaser and Jessica Marks and triple crown winner Niall Farrell. Eventually, it were Gary Kirwan, Henri Ojala, and Sean Cunningham who were all eliminated on separate tables on the bubble, seeing them split two min-cashes as a result.

Once in the money, goodbyes were quickly said to EPT winner Uri Gilboa and old-school legend Luca Pagano. Also falling shortly after the bubble had burst was Kyle O'Connor, who got his Main Event seat in a freeroll hosted by Paddy Power Poker.

Later in the day, Fintan Hand joined his fellow Red Spades on the rail, and Juha Helppi, Scott Margereson, and Sokratis Linaras also headed to the bar.

Finally, 109 players bagged up for Day 3, which will resume at noon local time, tomorrow, March 31, keeping in mind Daylight Saving Time which will go into effect in Ireland during the night. Blinds will then restart at Level 23: 10,000/25,000 with a 25,000 big blind ante.

Check back in to PokerNews then to find out who will make it through the final day of the Irish Open Main Event.

Lappin Breaks the Curse

David Lappin
David Lappin

Conor Beresford and David Lappin were heads up on a turn of 92K3, which got checked by both. The 8 river was also knuckled down and Lappin showed down Q9 for a pair of nines.

Beresford's cards hit the muck and Lappin jumped up from his seat.

"I've finally done it!" he exclaimed after apparently not winning a pot for a while. "I hope we play another level now."

O'Kearney Steadily Climbing

Nível 21 : Blinds 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
Dara O'Kearney

Paul Corrway limped in from the small blind and Dara O'Kearney checked his option in the big blind. Corrway then continued for 18,000 on the A410 flop and O'Kearney put in a call.

Corrway sized up to 33,000 on the J turn, but O'Kearney still stuck around with a call. The 6 river was quickly checked by both, and O'Kearnet tabled KJ for a pair of jacks and the winning hand.

O'Kearney ended up with more than double the average as his Day 2 is going smoothly thus far.

Wilson Wins Seven-Figure Three-Way All-In to Grab Chip Lead

Nível 20 : Blinds 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Simon Wilson
Simon Wilson

Tarmo Tammel raised to 25,000 from middle position and Emmett Mullin called in the cutoff. Simon Wilson squeezed to 103,000 from the small blind.

Tammel announced his all-in for 320,000 after a while, after which Mullin went all in as well, for 481,000.

Wilson asked for both counts and went deep into the tank. After a few minutes, he came out with a call, covering both of his opponents and creating a pot worth well over one million chips.

Tarmo Tammel: 1010 All in
Emmett Mullin: QQ All in
Simon Wilson: AK

Wilson needed to hit an ace or king to scoop up the gigantic pot, and he did just so on the 4AJ flop. Neither the 3 turn nor 4 river made either of his opponents a set, and Wilson scored a double knock-out while simultaneously grabbing the chip lead.

Mavritsakis Hits Set to Keep Back-To-Back Dream Alive

Panagiotis Mavritsakis

Joel Baxter raised to 25,000 from the cutoff before Panagiotis Mavritsakis jammed all in for 209,000 in the big blind. Baxter asked for a count and made the call shortly thereafter with the bigger stack.

Panagiotis Mavritsakis: 44 All in
Joel Baxter: 88

It was looking like the end for Mavritsakis' tournament run after finishing in third place last year, but the 2K4 saw him hit a four to take a massive lead. The 5 turn brought some chop outs, but the 7 river remained clean for the Greek to book a double-up and remain in contention.

Jonatan Fors raised to 18,000 in the hijack before Luke Walsh made it 65,000 to go in the cutoff. Alejandro Vazquez then four-bet to 140,000 from the big blind and only Walsh made the call.

On the Q79 flop, Vazquez continued for 65,000 and Walsh put in a call. The 3 turn and 6 river were then checked by both players, and Vazquez tabled K6 for a pair of sixes.

Walsh had the better hand with JJ for a pair of jacks and raked in the sizable pot to climb to more than double the average stack.

Henri Ojala Eliminated During Hand-For-Hand Play; Splits Prize Money With Cunningham and Kirwan

Nível 17 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Henri Ojala - Stephen Groom
Henri Ojala - Stephen Groom

On the stone bubble, Henri Ojala got his final 130,000 chips from the hijack against Stephen Groom in the cutoff.

Henri Ojala: 88 All in
Stephen Groom: QQ

The flop of 796 gave Ojala a straight draw, but the 6 turn brought him no help. Groom made the better full house with the 6 on the river and Ojala was eliminated on the bubble of the Irish Open Main Event after making the final table last year.

Luckily for him, Sean Cunningham and Gary Kirwan busted simultaneously on different tables, resulting in the three players sharing two min-cashes, resulting in €1,173 awarded to each player.

Worley-Roberts Destroys Sjoberg to Ascend Among Leaders, Hennen Makes Sick Fold

Nível 16 : Blinds 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Deborah Worley-Roberts
Deborah Worley-Roberts

Per Erlend Sjoberg got in his final 40,000 chips from the cutoff and received two callers in Deborah Worley-Roberts in middle position and Rutger Hennen in the small blind.

Hennen then led out for 60,000 chips on the J108 flop and Worley-Roberts called to create a side pot. The Q turn was subsequentially dealt, causing Hennen to slow down and check.

Worley-Roberts took the opportunity to jam all in for 151,000, sending Hennen into the tank. After a few minutes, he decided to fold his JJ face-up, adding the set to the muck and creating a showdown.

Per Erlend Sjoberg: KK
Deborah Worley-Roberts: QQ

Hennen folded his set correctly as Worley Roberts took down the main pot on the 3 river. Sjoberg exited the tournament area while Worley-Roberts celebrated winning the big pot extravagantly.
