Records Might Be Shattered as Second Starting Flight of Irish Open Main Event Begins at Noon

Irish Open 2024
Irish Open 2024

The 2024 Irish Open €1,150 Main Event, sponsored by PokerStars and Paddy Power Poker, boasts a €1,000,000 guaranteed prize pool, but if history is anything to go by, that number might be eclipsed today on Day 1b, which kicks off at the Royal Dublin Society at noon local time.

Last year, 644 entries were made during the second of four starting flights, and the expectation is that this year there will be even more of them. Eventual champion David Docherty took a pivotal step in that flight, securing the chip lead on his way to victory.

Whoever ends up with the most chips this time around will have to surpass Day 1a chipleader Pascal Baumgartner, who ended up with 329,500 chips, to grab the overall chip lead. Meanwhile, Irish grinder Simon Wilson (303,500) and UKIPT London High Roller champion Jorge Ramella (259,000) also found themselves in the top ten chip counts after the first starting flight had whittled its 379 entries down to just 72.

Docherty also made an appearance on the first starting flight but fell shortly before the day ended. The expectation is that he will return today for Day 1b, as will many other faces from yesterday, alongside heaps of new names.

Day 1b will play 14 levels of 45 minutes each, with a break after every three of them. Every registrant will receive 30,000 chips, worth 300 big blinds at the start of play and just under 19 of them when late registration closes at the end of Level 10.

One reentry is allowed per starting flight, and those who use up both bullets today still have Day 1c and the turbo flight of Day 1d to look forward to, both taking place tomorrow, Friday, March 29.

Aces Hold In Four-Way Three-Bet Pot

Beat Schegel
Beat Schegel

Marcus Hallabro raised to 300 from the hijack and received calls from Paul McVeigh in the cutoff and Stephen Ryan on the button. Beat Schegel then made it 1,200 to go from the big blind and all three players called.

Schegel continued for 1,500 on the 447 flop and Hallabro and McVeigh called before Ryan got out of the way. Schegel slowed down and checked the 4 turn, after which Hallabro bet 3,200 chips.

McVeigh came along and Schegel tossed in a call as well, and the subsequent 6 river was checked by all players. Hallabro showed 76 for a full house and McVeigh played the same full house with 75.

However, Schegel had AA for a better full house and raked in the big pot.

Hurson Accidentally Sends Out Quinn

Nível 3 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante
Garry Hurson
Garry Hurson

James Quinn jammed in his final 5,000 or so chips from under the gun. Garry Hurson sat in the small blind and did not see Quinn's raise, trying to raise against Seamus Cahill in the big blind instead. After an explanation, Hurson had to call Quinn and the cards went on their backs.

James Quinn: JJ
Garry Hurson: A2

The 395 flop gave Hurson a draw to the wheel, and it came in on the 4 turn. Quinn had no outs left to hit as the 2 river completed the board, and he booked an early exit out of the Main Event.

Gustafsson Gets Full Value to Grab Chip Lead

Nível 4 : Blinds 100/300, 300 ante
Ulf Gustafsson
Ulf Gustafsson

In a four-way pot between Ulf Gustafsson in the small blind, Paul McGann in the big blind, Raitis Romanovs under the gun, and Keith Smith in the hijack, 4,000 chips had been gathered.

The flop read 1093 and the action checked to Smith, who fired a bet of 3,000. Gustafsson then made it 8,000 to go, which folded out McGann. Romanovs, however, called cold and Smith tossed in the extra chips as well.

On the subsequent 4 turn, Gustafsson sized up to 15,000. Romanovs quickly folded but Smith still stuck around with a call. Gustaffson then put Smith all in for 16,000 on the 10 river and the latter slammed in a call.

Gustafsson tabled KK for two pair with kings, beating the JJ Smith showed. Smith headed towards the exit while Gustafsson chipped up to a six-figure stack.

Day 1b of the €1,150 Irish Open Main Event has reached 666 entries, with late registration still open for six more levels. The 644 entries that were made on Day 1b have already been bested and the number is only set to grow larger.

Meanwhile, including the entries on Day 1c and Day 1d, the guarantee has been met as the prize pool has reached €1,059,825. Time will only tell how much money will be divided among the in-the-money players.

Drake Finds Nuts on River

Nível 6 : Blinds 200/500, 500 ante

Ian Drake pushed all in for 14,800 on a completed board of KJ3410. With 19,000 already in the pot prior to that, Ravi Sheth was sent into the tank.

Eventually, he slammed in a call and Drake tabled AQ for Broadway. Sheth was forced to show his KQ for top pair as he frustratedly forfeited his chips to his opponent.

Three-Way All-In Triples L'Huillier, Busts Romanovs

Nível 8 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante

On a flop of 6J5, with 16,000 chips in the middle, Raitis Romanovs made a bet from the big blind. Thomas Garment called in middle position before Jean L'Huillier jammed all in for 22,000 in the hijack.

Romanovs then rejammed for 43,500, and Garment made the call to put them both at risk.

Jean L'Huillier: A10 All in
Raitis Romanovs: QQ All in
Thomas Garment: 66

Garment's set remained ahead when the turn fell the 10, but the 4 river gave L'Huillier a flush to triple up. Meanwhile, Romanovs lost the side pot and was eliminated by Garment as a consequence.

Boyce Hits Draw in Monster Pot

Nível 9 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

A modest amount of 12,000 chips was in the middle in a pot between Miguel Goncalo in the cutoff and Oliver Boyce in the small blind. However, after the action had concluded on the 7QA flop, all the chips went into the middle, with Goncalo's 48,000 chips at risk.

Miguel Goncalo: AQ All in
Oliver Boyce: J8

Goncalo faded a heart on the 5 turn, and he asked for a non-heart three on the river. However, the 10 appeared instead, much to the frustration of Goncalo, who let out some expletives before leaving the tournament area.

Meanwhile, Boyce chipped up to a six-figure stack to be among the leaders in the room.

Reconstructed Flop Leads to Double-Up

Nível 10 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

When the action was caught, Antoine Savaria and Pablo Villena each had 6,000 in chips in front of them, along with 7,500 in the pot. However, apparently, the dealer thought that the hand had finished and mucked the flop.

The floor was called over and thanks to the help of some players on the table, the 1098 flop was eventually reconstructed. The deck was then reshuffled and play went on as normal.

On the subsequent 6 turn, Savaria bet out for 15,000, after which Villena jammed all in for 32,300. A quick call followed from Savaria and the cards were tabled.

Pablo Villena: J7 All in
Antoine Savaria: A7

Both players had a straight, but Villena had the higher one. The 5 river did not bring a chop and the unconventional pot was shipped to Villena, leaving Savaria with less than ten big blinds.
