Welcome to Day 1a of the €1,100 French National Championship in Monte-Carlo

Defending Champion Guillaume Diaz
Defending Champion Guillaume Diaz

The 2019 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo®Casino European Poker Tour has kicked off with a beautiful view over the French Riviera and one of the festival highlights will get underway at 12 p.m. local time at The Monte-Carlo Sporting with Day 1a of the €1,100 French National Championship. Poker enthusiasts from near and far will take their seats in the Salle des Etoiles for the highly popular mid-stakes event that was formerly branded as the France Poker Series and EPT National.

A big field is expected throughout three starting days, as this very tournament attracted more than one thousand runners in each of the last three years. In 2018, a new record was with a massive field of 1,501 entries and it was French poker pro Guillaume Diaz that took home the title and top prize of €250,000. Also featured on the final back then were Federico Petruzzelli, Michal Mrakes, Abraham Passet, and Randy Lew.

Diaz will certainly be back in action again to defend his title, and he will face plenty of opponents from his home country France, along with Italy and many other European countries. However, Monte Carlo is also a very popular stop for international players and typically attracts some of the biggest names in poker to showcase their abilities at the table.

The €1,100 French National Championship will feature a total of three starting days on Friday, April 26th, 2019 and Saturday, April 27th, 2019 with a level duration of 40 minutes throughout. Players can enter a total of three times with re-entry to a following flight and receive 30,000 in chips. There will be a break every three levels and a dinner break of 75 minutes after the end of level nine.

The tournament features the popular big blind ante format and each Day 1 will play down to 15% of the field. All survivors will bag and tag for the night, combine to one field for Day 2 and all those coming back will have a portion of the prize pool locked up. The PokerNews team will be there to provide live updates throughout and until a champion is crowned.

Jacqueline Gaillard
Jacqueline Gaillard

On a three-way flop of {j-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}, Jacqueline Gaillard check-raised from 500 to 1,500 out of the big blind and Thomas Sinsen on the button was the only caller. Gaillard bet the {a-Diamonds} turn for 2,000 to get called and another bet of 5,000 on the {7-Hearts} river resulted in a call, too. Gaillard turned over {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} for a set of jacks and Simsen mucked, mentioned in table chat he had {a-}{9-} and "pity it wasn't clubs."

The table also features Jose Astima and Jeremy Palvini, two well-known French players in the mid-stakes circuit.

Ruan Eliminated by Kalac

€1,100 French National Championship Day 1a
€1,100 French National Championship Day 1a

Ivan Kalac entered not long ago and was just spotted dragging in the stack of Jiayu Ruan, who had his cards mucked already. Kalac had turned the nut straight with {9-Hearts}{8-Clubs} on a board of {7-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and Antonin Teisseire confirmed the action.

According to Teisseire, Ruan had opened to 500 and picked up two callers including Kalac. Teisseire three-bet to 3,000 and was called two ways, the Frenchman then folded on the flop with ace-king. Ruan had flopped the straight with {5-Spades}{4-Spades} but ended up second-best on the turn when the chips went in.

Weissman checked the {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{4-Hearts} flop and Rebei checked behind to see the {5-Clubs} turn. Weissman checked and called a bet of 5,000 by Rebei before ending up check-folding the {8-Spades} river when facing a bet of 6,000.

Dunac Triples Up in Spectacular Fashion

Nível 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
EPT Monte Carlo
EPT Monte Carlo

In a multi-way limped pot, the flop showed {a-Spades}{4-Clubs}{3-Spades} and Ami Barer bet, Benjamin Dunac reraised and Christophe Di Miceli made it three bets to more than 27,000. Barer moved all in and Dunac called that for less. Di Miceli gave it some thought and eventually called too, putting two players at risk.

Benjamin Dunac: {6-Spades}{5-Spades}
Ami Barer: {4-Spades}{4-Hearts}
Christophe Di Miceli: {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}

Dunac failed to connect with the {8-Hearts} turn, but secured a big triple up on the {2-Diamonds} river to get 58,700 off both opponents. Barer doubled his remaining 53,400 through Di Miceli, who went from one of the chip leaders to half the starting stack.

Double Knockout for Bicknell with a Straight Flush

Kristen Bicknell
Kristen Bicknell

The board was already completed and showed {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and Haim Dahan was waiting for Benoit Martin and Kristen Bicknell to battle for the main pot, as he was all in on a previous street. Martin led from the small blind and Bicknell jammed for more than 67,000, which Martin called after some consideration.

Bicknell rolled over {q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for a straight flush, Dahan revealed {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and Martin had just {k-Spades}{8-Spades} for a straight.

According to Bicknell, Dahan had been all in on the flop with his pair and gutshot, and the Canadian soared to a big stack as Martin was also covered with around 60,000.

Jean-René Fontaine opened to 3,200 and was called by Alexandre Reard and Fred Weiss. Masato Yokosawa three-bet to 12,500, which Fontaine called. Reard moved all in for more than 90,000 and Weiss reluctantly folded, while Yokosawa snap-called. Fontaine glanced at the stack of Reard and folded.

Masato Yokosawa: {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades}
Alexandre Reard: {7-Spades}{7-Hearts}

The board of {q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{6-Spades} gave Yokosawa aces and queens, and he doubled for 43,400.

Lew Two-Outers Tedeschi; Lin Gone

Nível 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Paul-Francois Tedeschi
Paul-Francois Tedeschi

Randy Lew opened to 5,000 and Paul-francois Tedeschi in the big blind three-bet to 27,000 with 3,000 behind. Lew gave it some thought and moved all in, Tedeschi called it off.

Paul-Francois Tedeschi: {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}
Randy Lew: {3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}

Nothing changed on the {j-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{6-Hearts} flop and Tedeschi had running hearts covered. However, the {3-Spades} turn improved Lew to a set and the {2-Spades} river was a blank.

At almost the same time, PokerStars ambassador Celina Lin vanished from a different table.

Diego Furlanetto raised the button to 7,000 and Randy Lew jammed for 58,000 in the big blind. Furlanetto ended up in the think tank and the clock was called on him by Sergey Baburin. Tournament staff arrived and Furlanetto called within the allocated 30 seconds of additional time.

Randy Lew: {3-Spades}{3-Clubs}
Diego Furlanetto: {4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}

Lew had been running well with treys on this table when he cracked a superior pocket pair. This time, however, the board came {10-Spades}{8-Hearts}{4-Spades}{j-Clubs}{2-Spades} and the American was left drawing dead on the turn already.

Chupin and Virzi Eliminated

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Afshin Taheri
Afshin Taheri

Valeriy Chupin jammed for the last three big blinds and change and he was called by Afshin Taheri in the big blind.

Chupin tabled the {a-Clubs}{2-Spades} and Taheri had two live cards in {q-Clubs}{4-Clubs}, which both showed up on the {q-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} flop. Chupin got some hope with the {2-Clubs} turn, but the {3-Clubs} river was a blank.

One hand later, Alexandre Joa Pinto opened and then saw Andrea Virzi shove for 50,000. Taheri reshoved in the small blind and Pinto folded {10-Hearts}{10-Spades} face up.

Andrea Virzi: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}
Afshin Taheri: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

The first card in the window as the {10-Diamonds}, but the {q-Hearts} and {9-Spades} followed. Virzi had a gutshot, but the {4-Clubs} turn and {a-Spades} river were of no help to see a player depart from the table in consecutive hands.

Other notable stacks on the table belong to Parham Ahoor, Julien Martini and Vladyslav Pohribnyi.
