Set Over Set Sends Cates Home

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Daniel Cates
Daniel Cates

Daniel Cates entered the EPT Vienna Main Event on the second day, and in total he played for less than an hour before busting out. Most of the times, when starting the day with a small stack, options are very limited but Cates was just knocked out in a "real" hand.

As we noticed Cates exit the tournament room we asked his former opponents what went down.

Cates called a raise preflop holding pocket kings and saw a {A-}{K-}{5-} flop roll out. Cates called another bet on the flop and on the turn, when a {3-} popped up, the remainder of his chips went into the pot.

The beautiful set of kings looked very bleak when Cates' opponent tabled {A-}{A-} for a set of aces, and the river did not bring the final card in the deck that would help him out.

Later this week, on March 27, the €10,000 will be played and there's a good chance Cates will be back for that.

Philbort vs. Speiser

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

Philipp "Philbort" Gruissem opened for 1,600 from the cutoff and Hannes Speiser defended from the bring blind. Speiser proceeded to check-call bets of 1,700 and 3,800 on the {3-Clubs}{a-Spades}{k-Hearts} flop and {4-Spades} turn respectively, and then both players checked the {3-Diamonds} river.

Speiser tabled the {a-Clubs}{q-Spades} for aces and threes, and it was good as Gruissem sent his cards to the muck unseen.

Grospellier Quadruples

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier

As we approached table 47 the flop was out, displaying {10-Hearts}{7-Spades}{3-Hearts}. Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier was already all in and had his arms folded and he kept quiet. He had no less than three opponents still in the hand and one of them, his next door neighbor in the big blind, had just bet out 22,300.

Both other players opted to fold so the big blind got his 22,300 back and the 44,000 Main Pot was all there was now. The big blind showed {J-Diamonds}{J-Spades} but Grospellier turned out to be in good shape holding {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}.

The {6-Hearts} on the turn and {4-Clubs} on the river were blanks and Grospellier quadrupled to about 44,000.

The Defending Champ Falls

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Michael Eiler
Michael Eiler

Christian Stallinger opened for 1,600 and PokerStars player Michael Eiler, who is the defending champ of this event after winning it back in Season 7, put in the last of his 5,500, Stallinger made the call with {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds} and Eiler was racing for his tournament life with {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}.

The cards fell {5-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{j-Spades} and Eiler made his way to the exit.

Stallinger claimed his second victim in back-to-back hands, and this time it assured a new EPT champion would emerge in Vienna.

Stuer Falls Early

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

Andre Vieira Andrade opened for 1,600 and was raised to 3,800 by Christian Stallinger to 3800. Julian Stuer then made it 7,200 and when Andrade folded Stallinger bet enough to put Stuer all in.

Stuer made the call with {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} and found out he was up against the {a-Spades}{k-Hearts} of Stallinger. The board ran out {9-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{8-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} and Stuer was eliminated very early in the day.
