Burns Leads Record-Breaking $50,000 Challenge After Day 1

Nível 6 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Kahle Burns
Kahle Burns

A total of 67 players jumped into the second-biggest event of the 2020 Aussie Millions and by the end of it, 39 players remain ahead of Day 2 which starts at 2:10 p.m. AEDT on January 18.

Late registration and unlimited re-entry is available until the end of the first level tomorrow, but the field is already a record, beating the 62 players from 2019.

Leading the way is Australian Kahle Burns who is the only player above 200,000 in chips. He leads from Elio Fox (187,700), Michael Soyza (187,400) and Mike Watson (169,600) at the top of the counts.

It was a good recovery for Watson, who was one of at least a dozen re-entries in the tournament, after the Canadian became the first elimination of the day. Aces were no good against the trip sixes of Alex Foxen, but Watson did better on his second bullet.

Other players to re-enter today included David Yan, Sam Grafton, Chi Zhang, Dan Smith and Aaron van Barclum.

$25,000 Challenge champion Farid Jattin was one of only two players who fired two bullets and failed to make Day 2, the other being Michael Lim. Jattin bust first to Dietrich Fast and then to Watson in the final level of the day, but may still choose to fire a third time tomorrow.

Other notable eliminations included Sam Higgs, Kazuhiko Yotsushika, Sergio Aido, Vincent Huang, Cary Katz, Chino Rheem and Thomas Muehloecker.

Cards will be back in the air on January 18 at 2:30 pm. The current plan is to play until a winner, although that seems unlikely considering the current blind levels and players remaining. Stay tuned to PokerNews for updates as we hopefully crown another winner here at the 2020 Aussie Millions.

Farid Jattin

Farid Jattin had shoved for 37,000 into a pot of only 25,000 on the {3-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{6-Spades}{8-Spades} river and opponent Mike Watson was deep int he tank.

He used two time extensions before flicking in a single chip to call.

Jattin showed {4-Hearts}{5-Hearts} for a missed flush draw and Watson showed {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} which was good enough to eliminate Jattin.

Double for Grafton; Grafton Eliminated

Nível 3 : 300/600, 600 ante
Sam Grafton
Sam Grafton

A few minutes ago, Sam Grafton was having a double counted out after holding {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} against the {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs} of Yang Wang. However, no sooner had he increased his stack to around 60,000, he tangled with Sam Greenwood and was subsequently eliminated.

According to tablemate Kristen Bicknell, Greenwood opened and called a three-bet from Grafton. Greenwood check-called two streets on a {q-}{9-}{3-}{5-} board and check-called a shove from Grafton on the river.

The Brit showed {k-}{k-} but was eliminated by the {q-}{q-} of Greenwood.

Meanwhile, Michael Lim has re-entered and Dan Smith has joined Grafton on the rail.

AU$50,000 Challenge Winner Toby Lewis

Welcome to the PokerNews coverage of the $50,000 Challenge High Roller from the 2020 Aussie Millions, here at Crown Casino in Melbourne.

This is the third of four five- and six-figure buy-in High Roller Challenges that PokerNews will be reporting on, and the excitement levels are building ahead of this one.

Last year, it was 2018 Main Event winner Toby Lewis who defeated Manig Loeser heads-up to top a 62-player field. He took home A$818,054 after a heads-up deal.

Lewis will no doubt be back in the field, fresh off the back of his third Aussie Millions title in three years after winning the Shot Clock Six Max earlier this week for A$148,030.
