Two years ago, on Day 1a of The Opener at the 2019 WSOP Europe, a total of 399 players entered.

Fast forward to the 2021 WSOP Europe and that number has been well and truly surpassed, with 744 players entering on Day 1a of Event #1: €350 Opener.

At the end of 14 levels of play, approximately 149 remain and will resume on Sunday, November 21 at 2 p.m. local time. Before then, there is a second flight of The Opener, with Day 1b kicking off on Saturday, November 20 at 4 p.m. local time.

The chip leader after Day 1a is Marc Meden who picked up aces in one of the last hands of the day to eliminate a player and bag 723,000. He is well ahead of Mantas Mameniskis (460,000), Marius Savescu (418,500) and Symeon Alexandridis (372,000).

Also through to Day 2 is defending champion Renat Bohdanov who bagged 170,500. In 2019, he won the seventh WSOP bracelet in Ukrainian history along with €53,654.

"There were so many players," he told PokerNews. "I think they're close to the guarantee after only one day! It was a pretty soft field, so I get a day off tomorrow. I think I'm going to play the PLO — who knows!"

Sebastian Langrock limped and called a shove from Ugur Coskun for Coskun's last 38,000.

Ugur Coskun: {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Sebastian Langrock: {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}

Sebastian Langrock: {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}

Defending Champ Bohdanov Knocks One Out

The board was {10-Spades}{4-Spades}{5-Hearts} and Simon Taberham checked to reigning champion Renat Bohdanov who bet 3,100 into a pot of around 7,000. The third player in the hand called before Taberham check-raised all in for 13,700.

Bohdanov tank-called, with the other player folding, and the cards were turned over.

Simon Taberham: {7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}
Renat Bohdanov: {k-Spades}{q-Spades}

With the cards exposed, Bohdanov placed the chips he had used to call back on his stack before the dealer reminded them they needed to remain out in front.

"Got it in so good you're taking your chips back," said Taberham.

"I'll put them back if I lose," replied Bohdanov light-heartedly. The turn {7-Spades} gave Bohdanov a flush and the river {k-Diamonds} was a brick, sending Taberham to the rail.

The full board of {6-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{7-Spades} was out between Vivian Saliba and another opponent. It checked to Saliba who bet 11,000 and her opponent called.

Saliba showed a six, eventually tabling {q-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for a pair of sixes and a missed flush draw, with her opponent showing {a-Clubs}{5-Hearts} for top pair and taking down the pot.

This beat bumped Saliba back down to starting stack.

Alexander Rahman: {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Willibald Stopfer: {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}

There was no help for either of his opponents on the {3-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} run out and Stopfer chipped up to 85,000, which is approximately double average with 399/639 players remaining.
