Fernandez Leads Last 35 After Day 1b; Mustafov, Petleshkov, Lykov and Neuville Among Big Stacks

Nível 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Sergio Fernandez leads after Day 1b
Sergio Fernandez leads after Day 1b

The second of three starting days of the 2017 World Series of Poker Europe €1,100 MONSTER STACK is in the books and 165 players took part to boost the overall field to 255 entries thus far at the King's Casino in Rozvadov. The tournament is well on track to reach and surpass the guarantee of €500,000, as the biggest starting field is expected for the third and final flight.

After 14 levels of 40 minutes each, only 35 hopefuls bagged up to join the 15 Day 1a survivors. Sergio Fernandez jumped into the top spot in the last level of the night after winning a flip with pocket tens against the ace-king of Ting Ho before further boosting his stack and bagging up 267,000. Fernandez is only half a big blind behind Day 1a chip leader Ismael Bojang and narrowly ahead of Jeff Cormier.

Behind Fernandez, a big gap emerged as Rene Crha claimed the second-most chips with 186,500, closely followed by 2017 WSOP International Circuit Rozvadov €5,300 High Roller champion Fahredin Mustafov with 183,000, while fellow Bulgarian Viliyan Petleshkov (178,500) also bagged up a top five stack on Day 1b. Other notables and big stacks that advanced include Maxim Lykov (153,500), Aneris Adomkevicius (153,000), Robert Schulz (143,000), Pierre Neuville (122,500), Usman Siddique (111,000), Jan Bendik (101,000), Andrej Desset (86,500) and two-time WSOP bracelet winner Eddy Scharf (59,000).

Some of the big names that took part on Day 1b and failed to bag up chips were the 2017 WSOP player of the year contenders Chris Ferguson, John Racener, Alex Foxen and Kenny Hallaert. Phil Hellmuth joined after the dinner break and his stack was soon cut in half in a hand against Maxim Lykov, which prompted one of the usual Hellmuth table chats. "It's not your fault," Hellmuth chirped to a smiling Lykov. "I make everyone look bad, just ask Jeff who has watched me for 20 years." Jeff Lisandro perked up and responded, "If it wasn't for the river Phil, you would have 28 bracelets," prompting chuckles from everyone at the table.

Kristen Bicknell had chipped up just prior before Robert Schulz flopped middle pair and a flush draw, then rivered trips tens to eliminate Bicknell. Schulz also sent Roberto Romanello to the rail after the Welshman's pocket aces ended up second best in a four-bet pot with Schulz flopping a set of nines and snap-calling the shove of Romanello. Brandon Cantu was sent to the rail after the dinner break when his jack-high flush was no good against the king-high flush of Viktor Kovachev.

During the last two levels of the night, the field was reduced signficantly and such familiar names as Felipe Ramos, Casey Kastle and Erich Kollmann ran out of chips. Kastle put his last two big blinds in with jack-nine suited versus ace-jack suited and the ace-king of eventual end-of-day chip leader Sergio Fernandez.

So far, at least 50 players will return for Day 2 on Sunday October 22nd 2017 as of 2 p.m. local time while all others that busted on either Day 1a or 1b can take another shot at the first of 11 bracelets in Europe's biggest poker arena. The final starting day gets underway at 2 p.m. local time and the registration remains open until the end of the dinner break at approximately 9 p.m. local time.

Maxim Lykov raised to 4,000 and the hijack called. Casey Kastle peeked at his cards and announced "I raise" loud and clear before tossing in his last 4,500 chips from the cutoff. "Everybody get out if you know what's good for you," the American joked. Christoph Richter was having none of it and shoved for around 25,000 right behind him, and Lykov called, forcing out the hijack.

Casey Kastle: {J-Spades}{9-Spades}
Christoph Richter: {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts}
Maxim Lykov: {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}

The board ran out {10-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{A-Spades}{2-Clubs} and Lykov sent both short stacks to the rail.

Hellmuth Missing

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth is no longer in contention on Day 1b and his former table opponents confirmed the elimination of the 14-time WSOP bracelet winner. Hellmuth got it in with pocket fives versus pocket sixes and jack-ten, and Chi Cuong Huynh made two pair with jack-ten. Cuong Huynh raised to 2,400 soon after and picked up two callers in Maxim Lykov and Jesper Mertz in the blinds. On a {10-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{5-Spades} flop, Cuong Huynh bet 6,000 and showed {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds} after both opponents folded.

The next hand, Casey Kastle raised to 2,400 and a short stack shoved for just 3,600. Mertz called in the blinds, as did Kastle. The two remaining active players checked the {A-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{4-Spades} flop and {4-Clubs} turn. Mertz check-folded the {7-Spades} river to a bet of 4,000 by Kastle and the player at risk turned over his {K-Clubs}{J-Clubs} with "I guess you have better than king-jack high."

Kastle showed {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} and the next player bowed out from their table.

Dario Marinelli raised to 2,200 and Viktor Kovachev called. Viliyan Petleshkov shoved from the hijack and Tomas Holman also moved all in to force out Marinelli. Kovachev asked for a count on Holman's shove, as he was the bigger stack of the two, and the Czech was all in for 32,500 to see Kovachev call.

Viliyan Petleshkov: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}
Tomas Holman: {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}
Viktor Kovachev: {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs}

The board came {K-Spades}{9-Hearts}{3-Spades}{A-Spades}{A-Hearts} and Petleshkov more than tripled up his stack of 26,800. At the same time, Grzegorz Wyraz ran with queens into kings and found no help either to bow out.

The flop read {a-Hearts}{4-Spades}{4-Diamonds} and Phil Hellmuth led out for 2,000 into a pot of around 4,500. Maxim Lykoc called and the {9-Hearts} landed on the turn. Both players checked to the {7-Clubs} on the river.

Hellmuth fired another bet of 3,900 and Lykov raised to 11,000. Hellmuth made the call and Lykov turned over {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds} for a full house on the river. Hellmuth sat and played with his cards, flashing the {a-Spades}{j-Spades} while doing so, and then came the banter.

"It's not your fault," Hellmuth chirped to a smiling Lykov. "I make everyone look bad, just ask Jeff who has watched me for 20 years."

Jeff Lisandro perked up and responded, "If it wasn't for the river Phil, you would have 28 bracelets."

Bicknell Chips Up Then Busts

Nível 7 : 250/500, 75 ante
Kristen Bicknell
Kristen Bicknell

Kristen Bicknell raised to 1,200 from under the gun and was three-bet to 3,500 from a player in middle position. Bicknell called and the flop came {k-Clubs}{j-Spades}{2-Clubs}. Bicknell check-called a bet of 5,100 on the flop and the {5-Clubs} landed on the turn. Both players checked and the {k-Diamonds} completed the board. Both players checked again and Bicknell tabled {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}. Her opponent showed {q-Spades}{q-Hearts} and the pot was shipped to Bicknell.

Just a couple of hands later, Bicknell got involved in a large pot with Robert Schulz. With around 7,500 in the middle, Bicknell led out for 5,600 on a board reading {k-Clubs}{10-Spades}{5-Clubs}{4-Hearts}. Schulz made the call and the {10-Diamonds} landed on the river.

Bicknell checked and Schulz moved all-in, putting Bicknell at risk for her last 17,000 should he call. She thought for a couple moments and finally pushed her chips forward. Schulz turned over {10-Clubs}{6-Clubs} and Bicknell sent her cards to the muck.

Korochenskiy Folds to Shove

Nível 5 : 150/300, 50 ante
Anatoly Korochenskiy
Anatoly Korochenskiy

A big pot was brewing on the table of Viktor Kovachev, Anatoly Korochenskiy, Pierre Neuville and Thomas Pettersson. The flop showed {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and Korochenskiy bet 5,050 in the small blind. Kovachev moved all in for 14,975 and Korochenskiy started to talk in Russian to get any kind of information from Kovachev.

Neuville jokingly said "dawai dawai dawai" which translates to "come on" and Pettersson grabbed his glass of beer and replied to Neuville with a "Nastrovje!" (cheers) before taking a sip. Korochenskiy eventually folded the {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} face up and asked in English if Kovachev had ace-king, but received no reply.

At the same time one table over, Fabian Gumz was all in for the last 5,400 with {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} and was called by an opponent with {A-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}. The board came {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{8-Spades} and Gumz tossed over his chair while jumping up and leaving the tournament area.
