Jens Lakemeier Ends Event #59: $2,500 Big Bet Mix in Stunning Fashion, Capturing His First World Series of Poker Gold Bracelet ($112,232)

Nível 24 : 12,000/24,000, 6,000 ante
Jens Lakemeier
Jens Lakemeier

In a span of less than 20 hands, Jens Lakemeier single-handedly brought Event #59: $2,500 Big Bet Mix from five players down to one to take down his first World Series of Poker gold bracelet.

Lakemeier started the final day as the chip leader but very quickly fell from that pole position. As soon as he regained the lead, though, he put the pedal to the metal and, with his aggressive play, removed each of his final four opponents.

Of course, play was slow and steady at first, with no one wanting to be the first to leave. That unfortunate honor went to Kenneth Fitzgerald, who lost a coin flip to Ashton Griffin. Fitzgerald exited in sixth place, taking home ($16,793) for his finish.

Play really slowed down after Fitzgerald’s exit, with the players trading pots back and forth for almost four hours. At one point, Lakemeier fell down to the shortest stack. He was able to double without a showdown by taking down several pots in a row, then finally doubled through Jerry Wong in a hand of Big O to take back the chip lead. He used that chip lead aggressively, raising relentlessly and putting immense pressure on his oponnents.

It wasn’t until a stunning 5 Card Draw hand that fireworks finally exploded. Ashton Griffin opened with a raise to 55,000 from the cutoff, and Wong shoved from the cutoff. Lakemeier called from the big blind, and Griffin called all in, as well. Lakemeier was only drawing to four outs with one card to come. Griffin had a better two pair than him, but Lakemeier binked his queen to make a full house and eliminate Wong and Griffin in the same hand.

Andrew Kelsall fell immediately after when Lakemeier turned a straight in Pot-Limit Omaha to leave Kelsall drawing dead.

Heads-up play, too, was a quick ordeal, as Jason Stockfish lasted less than 10 hands. Lakemeier had an overwhelming chip lead, and the two got it all in during a Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo hand. Lakemeier held top pair, while Stockfish had middle pair and a straight draw. The turn and the river bricked out, and that earned Lakemeier the victory.

Lakemeier has had some success in live tournaments in Europe, but this is his first World Series of Poker bracelet and by far his biggest WSOP cash, as well as his first cash this summer. For his win, he locked up his first gold bracelet and the $112,232 first prize.

No-Limit 5 Card Draw

In a stunning hand, Jens Lakemeier just eliminated both Jerry Wong and Ashton Griffin at the same time.

Ashton Griffin opened from the cutoff with a raise to 55,000. Jerry Wong then moved all in from the small blind with a covering stack. Next to act was Jens Lakemeier, and he called the all-in from the big blind.

Ashton Griffin stood up from his chair, motioned his chips into the pot, pulled them back for a second, then plopped them down, calling, as well.

Wong took three, Lakemeier took one, and Griffin took one.

Griffin turned up {A-Hearts}{A-Spades}{K-Hearts}{K-Clubs} for two pair while Lakemeier was drawing thin with {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}. Wong was left drawing practically dead with {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}. He needed to draw three of a kind to improve to a full house, which he did not do; he showed {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}, making him a worse two pair.

Griffin turned up his last card, showing the {3-Clubs} and keeping his hand the same.

Lakemeier then sheepishly turned over his last card. It was the {Q-Diamonds} making him a full house and scoring him the double knockout.

With that hand, Lakemeier moves into the overwhelming chip lead. Griffin takes fifth place with the shortest stack for $23,235, and Wong takes fourth for $32,804.

Big O

Jerry Wong raised to 40,000 and Jens Lakemeier announced pot to 144,000 from the next position. Wong called and the flop came {4-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{10-Spades}.

Wong announced pot and Lakemeier moved all in. The cards were turned over.

Wong: {a-Clubs}{2-Spades}{10-Clubs}{q-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Lakemeier: {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{J-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}

The turn was the {8-Spades} and the river the {j-Clubs}, meaning Lakemeier scooped with aces up and no low. The start-of-day chip leader now sits on around 900,000 in chips.

Andrew Kelsall Hits One Outer; Doubles Up

Five Card Draw

Jens Lakemeier raised to 52,000 and Andrew Kelsall three-bet all in for 155,000. The blinds both folded and Lakemeier called.

Lakemeier drew two.

"That's not good," said Kelsall, deliberating. He eventually drew three.

Lakemeier showed {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} and Kelsall {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}. Lakemeier couldn't improve on his trip threes, showing {7-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}.

Kelsall peeled each of his cards in turn. "We need paint," he said. "Well that's not paint!" He turned over the {a-Clubs}.

"That's paint," he said after peeling his second card. "We'll put that over there for later."

His last card was the {4-Clubs}, meaning he would need a king to double up. Ashton Griffin said that he folded a king.

"Yesss!" said Kellsall before triumphantly slamming the {k-Clubs} on the table to double up. "I only learnt how to peel cards this year! That was fun!"

No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw

Jerry Wong opened from the cutoff with a raise to 44,000. Next to act was Jens Lakemeier and he moved all in from the button. Andrew Kelsall immediately capped his cards and dropped into the tank from the small blind.

"I couldn't wait for it to get to me," Kelsall said. "My chips were gonna be in there so fast."

"You guys act like my raises mean nothing," Wong said.

"This is the third time this has happened to me," Kelsall said. Eventually Jason Stockfish called the clock and, with 10 seconds left, Kelsall folded.

"Call. Pat." Wong said in immediate succession.

Lakemeier groaned. He looked at his hand and couldn't decide what to do. Eventually he pitched one in.

"Jack-seven?" Ashton Griffin asked. Lakemeier nodded.

"Good break," Wong said. He turned up {10-}{8-}{7-}{6-}{4-}.

Lakemeier was holding {7-}{6-}{5-}{4-} and needed a two, a nine, or a ten to stay alive. He flipped up the last card and revealed a {2-}, securing him a double-up through Wong.

"Nice break," Wong said again. A relieved Lakemeier stacked his new found chips from his double up.

Ashton Griffin, from the cutoff, raised to 23,000. Action folded around to Kenneth Fitzgerald in the big and he moved all in for roughly 75,000. Griffin instantly called.

Fitzgerald: {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}
Griffin: {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}

The board ran out {10-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{K-Spades}{5-Clubs}{5-Hearts} which gave Fitzgerald some extra outs on the flop, but never materialized. Fitzgerald will take home $16,793 for his sixth-place finish which is his biggest World Series of Poker cash so far.

Third Time Lucky for Jason Stockfish at $2,500 Big Bet Mix Final Table?

Jason Stockfish
Jason Stockfish

It’s fitting that, in the inaugural $2,500 Big Bet Mix, someone will win their first World Series of Poker gold bracelet. Each of the final tablists has a story to tell and we’ll start with the chipleader:

Jens Lakemeier comes into the day with 702,000 and is looking for the second-biggest live score of his career, which he can achieve with a win. Lakemeier has three tournament wins on his poker resume: in pot-limit Omaha, five-card hi-lo, and eight-game mix, and will be looking to secure the biggest profile win of his career to date.

Jerry Wong has 680,000 chips and has two WSOP final tables to his name. Most famous for making the 2016 November Nine, where he finished eighth, Wong has close to $3M in live earnings and will be looking to add to that with victory today.

Jason Stockfish with 514,000 chips has two runner-up finishes at the WSOP. Last year he finished second in the $1,500 Eight Game Mix while this year less than one month ago he finished second in the $565 Pot-Limit Omaha. Stockfish will be looking to take down this tournament and go that one step further and secure his first WSOP gold bracelet.

Ashton Griffin has 232,500 in chips and is looking for his first WSOP final table since 2013. His deepest run came one year previously when he finished fifth in the $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw event for $55,482.

Andrew Kelsall has three final tables on his WSOP resume and has 185,500 in chips. This year, he has two including a third place in the $1,500 H.O.R.S.E.

Kenneth Fitzgerald is the short stack at the table and will come back with just 143,000 in chips. With just over $60K in lifetime earnings, he looks set to add to that with a deep run today.

Stay tuned to PokerNews throughout today to see who will be crowned the victor in the $2,500 Big Bet Mix.
