Day 1 Has Concluded and Martin Kabrhel Leads the Way

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Martin Kabrhel
Martin Kabrhel

A total of 1,763 hopefuls filtered through the Amazon room today for Day 1 of Event #58: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em at the 2017 World Series of Poker inside the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino.

After ten 60-minute levels, just 269 players remain fighting for a $395,918 first place prize and the WSOP gold bracelet. Only the top 265 will leave with a piece of the $2,380,050 prize pool, meaning four players will not make the money coming back on Day 2.

The chip leader on Day 1 was Martin Kabrhel, building up an impressive stack of 235,000. Kabrhel hails from the Czech Republic and has 16 WSOP cashes to go along with two circuit rings, totaling $298,131. Kabrhel has already cashed three times this year at the WSOP and looks to add to that total with a big result in this event.

Following behind Kabrhel are Artur Rudziankov (173,400), Andreas Christoforou (152,000), Felipe Leme (145,200) and Ricardo Hernandez (136,900).

Notables also moving on to Day 2 include Kenny Hallaert, Chance Kornuth, Asi Moshe, Phil Laak and Andre Akkari

Some of the notables that took a shot on Day 1 and didn't make it were Craigh Varnell, James Woods, Kristen Bicknell, Allen Cunningham, Dominik Nitsche, Phil Hellmuth, and Paul Wasicka.

Day 2 will kick off at noon on Saturday, July 1. Ten and a half 60-minute levels are on the schedule for Day 2 and the money bubble will be looming right out of the gate as they are four away from getting paid. Blinds will be 600/1,200 with a 200 ante.

Cannon Cannons at Cada

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Joe Cada (as seen in previous event)
Joe Cada (as seen in previous event)

Joe Cada has been steadily chipping up throughout the day. The two-time WSOP bracelet winner doesn't get bluffed often, but we just witnessed one occurrence of it.

A player under the gun raised to 1,800. Cada was in the small blind and called. Guy Cannon was in the big blind and announced a raise to 5,000. The original raiser called and Cada called.

The flop was {a-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{3-Hearts} and Cada checked. Cannon fired out a bet of 5,500. The under the gun player tanked for a minute or two and then folded. Cada took about ten seconds and then asked his opponent, "Will you show?" He didn't get a response. Again, "Will you show if I show?" and Cannon responded, "Show me first."

Cada obliged, flashing pocket jacks and folding. Cannon, a man of his word, showed the table pocket nines. A proud moment for sure for the Fountain Hills, Arizona resident.

Straight Flush

Nível 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
WSOP Chips
WSOP Chips

George Dimitriadis was in the blinds and got his remaining 3,725 in the middle. There were four players that appeared to have called an open-raise in early position of 1,000. The initial raiser called and Dimitriadis and all other players folded.

Dimitriadis: {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Opponent: {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}

Dimitriadis needed a lot of help if he was going to survive. The flop did just that when the {7-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{8-Hearts} hit the board. The turn was the {7-Clubs}, putting a bit of a sweat out there with the possible full houses that could beat Dimitriadis. The river was flipped over and the {6-Hearts} completed things and Dimitriadis didn't just win the hand with a flush, but made a straight flush to the ten to save his tournament life. How's that for a story to tell your friends?! Dimitriadis will remember this one for a long time.

Hawkins Keeps on Climbing

Nível 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Maurice Hawkins
Maurice Hawkins

With the board reading {j-Clubs}{10-Spades}{8-Spades}, it appeared Maurice Hawkins had led out for 1,000 in the small blind. The player in the big blind called and another player in the hijack three-bet to 2,800. Hawkins then moved all in and the big blind called for his remaining 4,625. The player in the hijack took a few minutes but eventually folded.

Hawkins showen {q-Spades}{j-Spades} for top pair with a gutshot straight-flush draw. Big blind talbed {10-Clubs}{9-Spades} for middle pair and an open-ended straight draw.

The board ran out {k-Diamonds} and the {3-Hearts}, shipping the pot to Hawkins.

Metaal With an Early Elimination

Govert Metaal
Govert Metaal

Govert Metaal hasn't taken long to increase his stack since late registering. Just now came a hand in which Metaal was in early position and limped in. Both blinds called.

The flop was {j-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} and the blinds checked. Metaal bet 300 and the small blind check-raised all in for 1,875. Metaal snap-called.

Metaal tabled {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts} for top pair with top kicker. The player in the small blind showed {10-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} for second pair.

Unfortunately for the small blind, the turn and river bricked off without helping him improve and Metaal held on to rake in the pot.

With about 3,000 in the pot and the board reading {4-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{9-Spades}{k-Spades}, Kevin O'Donnell checked in late position. His opponent in the cutoff moved all in for roughly 2,700. O'Donnell though for a minute and then called.

O'Donnell's opponent tabled {5-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} for five-high and a missed straight draw. O'Donnell showed {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for two pair and took down the pot.

Navarro Catches Lightning

With about 1,100 in the pot and the board reading {q-Clubs}{7-Spades}{a-Hearts}{7-Clubs}, Francisco Navarro was in the small blind and led out for 400. Michael Moore was in middle position and called as did a player in the cutoff.

The river was the {a-Spades} and Navarro led again but for 1,200 this time. Moore's face told it all as he begrudgingly called and the other opponent in the cutoff folded.

Navarro tabled {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}, having made an aces full of sevens boat on the river. Moore showed {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} for a smaller boat after flopping a set, and Navarro nabbed the pot.

Ken Aldridge is also at this table and commented on how well Moore and Navarro are playing thus far. He said,"Moore has my number today. I make a hand and he has a better one." Aldridge is one of the classiest most enjoyable players around the scene and everyone can spot him a mile away, always wearing his trade mark yellow colors.

Fasten your seat belts and start your engines! Event #58: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em gets things going today at 11 a.m. as the 2017 World Series of Poker races forward.

When play commences today, players will play ten 60-minute levels and get a 20-minute break every two levels. Dinner break will take place after Level 6, around 5:40 p.m., and will be 90 minutes long. Players will be given 7,500 in chips to use at their discretion while battling their way towards the coveted WSOP gold bracelet.

Last year David Peters won one of the later $1,500 NLHE events on the summer schedule. Peters won his first WSOP bracelet, carving his way through a field of 1,860 players to take home $412,557. Peters has already cashed three times this summer, too, and may well be back here to defend his title, so keep locked in to see if we get another WSOP repeat champion.

This year, three events of this type have already taken place. David "The Dragon" Pham won Event #12, besting a field of 1,739 players to take home his third WSOP bracelet and $391,960. Then in Event #24, Shane Buchwald tore through a field of 616 entries for his first WSOP victory and $177,985. More recently in Event #33, Chris Frank was able to grind his way through, topping a field of 1,698 players to take home $384,833 for his efforts.
