Hunter Frey Among Leaders After Day 1b

Nível 18 : 3,000/6,000, 500 ante
Hunter Frey
Hunter Frey

The opening day of Colossus III is in the books and Hunter Frey bagged 400,000 to lead the Day 1b field. Frey leads 64 players into Day 2 Monday.

Frey just beat out Ryan Buckholtz (386,000) and Scott Bohlman (346,000), both of whom came on late to overtake some of the bigger stacks throughout the day. Jesse Vilchez (331,000) and Yang Zhang (283,000) round out the unofficial top five stacks from Day 1b.

Frey also came on late in the evening, with Mike Dentale (217,000) hitting some bumps in the final level. Dentale was cruising through the middle parts of the tournament working his stack up to 400,000 with relative ease. He told us during the final level he lost at least two hands where his opponent hit a two-outer to win the pot. Dentale still managed to bag over 200,000 and is sitting comfortably for the Day 2 restart.

Mike Sexton (225,000) and Michael Rocco (133,000) have also made it through to Day 2. Meanwhile, Barry Greenstein, Dan O'Brien, Jesse Sylvia, and both former Colossus Champions Cord Garcia and Ben Keeline failed to find a bag in Day 1b.

There are still four more starting flights for Colossus III and four more chances for Ben Keeline, last year's winner, to defend his title. Follow all the updates right here on PokerNews, as the 2017 World Series of Poker continues through July.

Mike Dentale is Crushing

Nível 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Mike Dentale
Mike Dentale

With just over three levels of play left in Day 1b of Colossus III, Mike Dentale just broke 400,000.

On his latest hand, he called a 20,000 bet on a {8-Clubs}{6-Spades}{5-Diamonds} flop. The turn was the {6-Hearts} and his opponent checked. Dentale went all in, putting his opponent at risk. His opponent called and Dentale showed {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for trip sixes.

His opponent appeared deflated as he turned over {9-}{8-}. The river was the {9-Clubs} and Dentale won yet another hand.

Mike Dentale Continues to Climb

Nível 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Mike Dentale
Mike Dentale

Mike Dentale is approaching 300,000 and sees supremely confident approaching the final break of the evening.

He was heads up on a board of {9-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{5-Clubs}{8-Clubs} and his opponent led for 25,000 into a 70,000 pot. With only the slightest hesitation, Dentale went all in. His opponent had about 45,000 behind and, after a few moments folded.

Dentale flipped over the {8-Clubs} and raked in the pot.

His opponent told him he had ace-five.

"That's so sick," replied Dentale, "Once you called, I was gonna check it down."

Dentale quickly stacked his chips.

"Until you bet."

Two Huge Pots: Dentale and Sarno Jump In Front

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Mike Dentale
Mike Dentale

Two players just won huge pots within a few moments of each other to share the chip lead as the later stages of Day 1b approach.

"Yeah baby!" Mike Dentale exclaimed as he jumped out of his chair, "Yes! I just won the Colossus."

That cause some of the remaining field to chuckle a little. Dentale had just eliminated a player for a pot worth about 80,000 to jump up to 170,000. He says he had a royal flush draw against a pair of queens and made broadway.

At a nearby table, Jay Sarno was seated next to Sebastian Pauli. Both had large stacks. The two players played a pot together and we caught the final action on the river.

The board read {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{6-Hearts} and there was about 60,000 in the pot. Sarno was first to act and shoved all in for 61,000. Pauli took a moment before calling and showing {a-}{k-}. Sarno turned over two fours, {4-}{4-}, for a full house and won the pot worth close to 120,000.

Straight Through the Bubble

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Colossus III
Colossus III

As Colossus III Day 1b approached the money bubble, the floor person announced that each dealer should stand at the end of the hand. This is the signal that hand-for-hand play is about to begin. However, the player that prompted that announcement ended up being the bubble and the next three players to bust all earned a min cash of $872.

One of those players, Michael Shanahan three-bet all in for his remaining 17,000 after an opening raise from Bas de Laat. de Laat called and flopped a pair against Shanahan. That would be good enough for de Laat to win the hand, and for Shanahan to be one of the first players to min cash this flight of Colossus III.
