Louie Calvo came out on top of a 630-player field in Event #49: $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 6-Handed at the 2107 World Series of Poker to win $362,185 and his first gold bracelet.

Once the official final table had been reached, the first player to be knocked out was Gerhard Schleicher, who got his stack in on the turn with two pair against Calvo's nut flush and failed to improve on the river. The next to depart was Aleksei Altshuller, who flopped bottom two pair and got his chips in against Rudolph Sawa's top two pair and got no help from the rest of the board. The fourth-place finisher was Eric Hicks, who entered the unofficial final table extremely short and saw a meteoric rise in his chip stack in a series of double-ups and huge pots before Calvo took the overwhelming majority of his stack in one hand and Sawa dispatched him on the very next one with aces against Hicks' pair of threes. Mark Reilly became the third-place finisher when he got his chips in on the flop with a combo draw against Calvo's pair of jacks and got no help from the deck on the turn or river.

Heads-up play between Calvo and Sawa didn't last long, and it all ended when all the chips went in on the flop with Sawa holding an open-ended straight draw and eight-high flush draw against Calvo's pocket aces and nut-flush draw. The turn and river were running queens, which changed nothing for either player, and meant the pot and the title belonged to Calvo.

"It's so exciting, what a feeling. I've been playing for 18 years, professionally for 17," Calvo said as he explained that he had spent most of his career focusing on cash games and had entered very few major tournaments. "Honestly, I just played my game the whole time. I picked my spots," he said with an uncontainable grin.

The atmosphere at the final table started out lively and enthusiastic, thanks in large part to Eric Hicks, whose good-natured, happy-go-lucky excitement drew more than a few of his friends to join his girlfriend, who had "GO ERIC" written across her exposed midriff, in cheering for him from the rail with beers in hand. Hicks spun up quite a stack and had the chip lead at several different points before he ultimately busted, and his rail exploded with every pot he dragged. When he departed, his rail went with him and the energy around the table dropped to a lull. However, Calvo was soon joined by a star-studded rail that included his longtime friend Michael Mizrachi, who stayed until Calvo, a fellow Floridian, had finished the job.

The pot-limit Omaha action at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino is winding down, but the biggest events are yet to come. Event #54: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed Championship begins Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. local time, and the final and most prestigious pot-limit Omaha event of the summer, Event #67: $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed High Roller, kicks off on July 5. Be sure to check back here for coverage of those and all other events at the 2017 World Series of Poker from the PokerNews live reporting team.

Luis Calvo Wins Event 49!
Luis Calvo Wins Event 49!

Louie Calvo raised to 160,000 on the button and Rudolph Sawa called from the big blind.

The flop came {9-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and Sawa checked. Calvo bet 200,000 and Sawa check-raised to 920,000. The rest of the chips went in the middle in a hurry and both players tabled their hands.

Calvo: {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Sawa: {8-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{2-Spades}

Calvo had the advantage with his aces and nut flush draw and Salvo needed his straight draw to complete in order to keep his bracelet hopes alive. The {Q-Diamonds} on the turn changed nothing and neither did the {Q-Spades} on the river, so Calvo took the pot to eliminate Sawa and become the tournament champion.

A full recap will be posted shortly.

Mark Reilly Eliminated in 3rd Place ($149,258)

Mark Reilly

Mark Reilly raised to 175,000 from the button and Louie Calvo called from the big blind.

The flop fell {J-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{4-Clubs} and Calvo checked. Reilly bet 225,000 and Calvo made a pot-sized check-raise to 1,065,000, sending Reilly into the tank briefly. He ultimately shoved and Calvo called to put him at risk.

Calvo: {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Reilly: {A-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{3-Spades}

Calvo had the advantage with his pair of jacks and Reilly, who held the nut flush draw and an open-ended straight draw, needed help from the deck to preserve his tournament life. The {10-Diamonds} turn and {9-Diamonds} river changed nothing and Calvo took the pot to end Reilly's deep run in this tournament.

Eric Hicks Eliminated in 4th Place ($101,513)

Nível 27 : 25,000/50,000, 0 ante
Eric Hicks
Eric Hicks

Rudolph Sawa raised to 100,000 from the button, Louie Calvo called from the small blind, Eric Hicks moved all in from the big blind for his last 125,000, and Sawa and Calvo both called.

The flop came {9-Spades}{6-Hearts}{3-Hearts} and Sawa bet 100,000 into the side pot. Calvo folded and Sawa and Hicks flipped over their cards.

Sawa: {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{4-Hearts}
Hicks: {J-Hearts}{10-Spades}{7-Hearts}{3-Spades}

Sawa had a commanding lead with his aces and nut flush draw and Hicks had little hope of preserving his tournament life. The {Q-Spades} turn and {5-Diamonds} river were no help to Hicks and he was eliminated, much to the dismay of his enthusiastically supportive rail.

Aleksei Altshuller Eliminated in 5th Place ($70,438)

Nível 26 : 20,000/40,000, 0 ante
Aleksei Altshuller
Aleksei Altshuller

Rudolph Sawa raised to 80,000 from the cutoff, and Aleksei Altshuller called from the big blind.

The flop came {Q-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{4-Hearts}, and in a flurry of activity, all the chips quickly went into the middle with Altshuller at risk.

Sawa: {K-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{J-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Altshuller: {K-Clubs}{J-Spades}{10-Clubs}{4-Clubs}

Sawa had the lead with top two pair against Altshuller's bottom two pair, so Altshuller needed help from the deck in order to preserve his tournament life. The {3-Clubs} on the turn was no help to Altshuller, and neither was the {5-Clubs} river, so Sawa took the pot to end Altshuller's deep run in this tournament.

Gerhard Schleicher
Gerhard Schleicher

Action folded around to the blinds, and Gerhard Schleicher called from the small. Louie Calvo raised to 120,000 from the big blind, and Schleicher called.

The flop came {K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and Schleicher bet the pot for 240,000. Calvo called. The turn brought the {9-Hearts}, and Schleicher checked. Calvo bet 400,000, putting Schleicher to a decision for his stack, and he went into the tank. Ultimately, he called to put himself at risk, and the two players tabled their hands.

Schleicher: {K-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}
Calvo: {A-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}

Calvo had the lead with the nut flush, and Schleicher had to make a boat on the river in order to survive. The {5-Hearts} was no help to Schleicher, though, and he was eliminated.

Eric Hicks Doubles and Then Doubles Again

Eric Hicks Doubles
Eric Hicks Doubles

Louie Calvo opened to 70,000, and Eric Hicks, who was next to act, asked for the size of a pot-sized raise. The answer was 270,000, and Hicks then potted. Rudolph Sawa was on the button, and he re-potted to get rid of all opponents but Hicks, who called for 395,000 total.

Eric Hicks: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Rudolph Sawa: {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{J-Spades}{2-Hearts}

Hicks was in bad shape, but he found the goods on the {6-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{8-Clubs}{7-Spades}{7-Hearts} board to double up.

In the following minutes, Hicks managed to score yet another double. He was all in on a {3-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{7-Spades} flop holding {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{7-Clubs}{6-Hearts}. Hicks was facing elimination against Aleksei Altshuller's {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{5-Spades}, but the {7-Diamonds} landed on the turn. The river {Q-Spades} kept Hicks' trips ahead, and he received a big chunk of chips from Altshuller.

Gionni DeMers raised to 60,000 from under the gun, Aleksei Altshuller called from the small blind, and Eric Hicks called from the big blind.

The flop came {A-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{3-Clubs}, and Altshuller checked. Hicks checked as well, and DeMers bet 85,000. Altshuller check-raised to 435,000, Hicks quickly folded, and DeMers and Altshuller got the rest of the chips in, putting the cards on their backs.

DeMers: {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{9-Hearts}
Altshuller: {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}

Altshuller was ahead with a set of threes, and DeMers needed to improve in order to survive. The {8-Spades} turn and {4-Diamonds} river changed nothing, and Altshuller took the pot to end DeMers' run in this tournament.

Brad Ruben Eliminated in 9th Place ($26,648)

Nível 24 : 12,000/24,000, 0 ante
Brad Ruben
Brad Ruben

Mark Reilly raised to 50,000 from the first position and Brad Ruben potted from one seat over. The blinds went out of the way but Reilly announced he was all in and Ruben called off for his remaining bits.

Reilly: {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}
Ruben: {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{J-Spades}{3-Clubs}

Reilly turned up double-suited aces, earning a "wow" from Ruben.

The flop {6-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{Q-Spades} brought a pair of queens for Ruben, who looked for another connection to escape his elimination. The turn {A-Hearts}, however, was a hammer, already locking the pot for Reilly. "Nice hand," offered Ruben, who knew he was going to payouts.

The river {2-} was meaningless as Ruben walked away in ninth place, earning $26,648.

Rudolph Sawa was moved to Table 1 due to balancing order, and he took Ruben's former spot, left to Mark Reilly. While Reilly is the tournament leader, Sawa is also playing a big stack so things may get spicy in the upcoming hands.

Chino Reem Finds a Lucky Double, Then Busts

Nível 21 : 6,000/12,000, 0 ante
Chino Rheem
Chino Rheem

Chino Rheem made another huge fold on the {3-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{9-Clubs}{A-Diamonds} board. There was about 500,000 in the pot and Rheem checked to Mark Reilly who bet 400,000. Rheem was agonised, but eventually folded, calling ace-three in Reilly's hand. Reilly indeed showed {A-Clubs}{3-Clubs}.

Rheem, however, doubled in the following minutes. He needed some help from the skies to beat Roussos Koliakoudakis, who had {A-}{A-}{X-}{X-} while Rheem held {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{3-Spades}. The board ran {7-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{8-Spades} and Rheem shouted: "Yes, two pair, eights and threes!" Koliakoudakis had to pay Rheem a full 193,000.

But Rheem didn't enjoy his double long. He was gone literally the next minute, running into aces again. This time, Reilly found the goods and nothing came to Rheem's rescue. His {K-}{K-}{X-}{X-} remained second, and the start-of-day chip leader departed in 15th Place for $15,531.

Meanwhile, Jeff Madsen was eliminated on another table, taking the same price as Rheem after busting in 16th place.
