Day 2 of the $50,000 Poker Players Championship has been played to its conclusion with Paul Volpe emerging as the new chip leader after another six levels of play. Volpe, who holds three gold bracelets, was the only player to bag over a million chips (1,092,000).

Play began on Day 2 with 44 players (up from the 39 players that bagged from Day 1) and increased periodically throughout the day until reaching a total of 63 by the time late registration ended. Among the new entries were Jesse Klein (656,000), Alex Livingston (872,000), Chris Brewer (715,000), Nick Schulman (723,000), Cary Katz (197,000) and Dan “Jungleman” Cates (944,000) – who made his 2021 WSOP debut and will be looking to improve on his sixth-place finish in the 2019 Poker Players Championship.

Notably absent was the defending champion Phil Hui, who has yet to make an appearance at the series this year.

By the end of the day, just 35 players remained. Some players who were less fortunate include Frank Kassela, George Wolff, Benny Glaser, Shaun Deeb, and previous PPC champions Michael Mizrachi and Freddy Deeb – all of whom were eliminated over the course Day 2.

Phil Hellmuth, who entered late into Day 2, was also unable to survive after being eliminated by a turned gutshot of George Alexander and failing to improve with a set.

The 63 entries generated a $3,016,125 total prize pool. Ten spots will pay, with the eventual winner taking home $954,020 in addition to a WSOP gold bracelet and the right to have their name engraved in the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy.

The cards were already flipped over as short stack Yuri Dzivielevski was at risk against felloe Brazilian Felipe Ramos. Dzivielevski was trailing from the get-go and the runout didn't provide any help. Instead, Ramos had the check mark on sixth street already and then further improved on seventh.

Phil Hellmuth

No-Limit Hold'em

There were four players involved to the {j-Spades}{5-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop and Phil Hellmuth bet 26,000 in the cutoff. Ryan Leng folded on the button and Adam Friedman did so in the small blind. George Alexander check-called out of the big blind and then checked the {4-Diamonds} on the turn.

Hellmuth bet 41,000 out of a total stack of around 175,000 and Alexander then check-raised to give Hellmuth the option to fold or call all-in. Once Hellmuth called, Alexander said "you are not going to like this one" as he flipped over the {6-Hearts}{3-Hearts} for a gutshot that had filled up.

Hellmuth still had outs with the {2-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} but missed on a blank {k-Spades} river. He vaulted out of his seat, gave a short speech and then stormed out of the tournament area.

Roman Yitzhaki: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier: {j-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}

Rast Picks Off Cates

Brian Rast
Brian Rast

Pot-Limit Omaha

Brian Rast opened to 9,000 from the cutoff and was called by Dan Cates on the button.

Rast bet 8,000 on the {a-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop and Cates called.

The turn brought the {2-Diamonds} and Rast check-called a 30,000 bet from Cates.

Rast checked again on the {6-Hearts} river and Cates bet 80,000 — sending Rast deep into the tank.

Rast counted out calling chips thought it over for a couple minutes before eventually committing them into the middle.

Cates motioned as if Rast's hand was good and Rast tabled {10-Spades}{7-Spades}{5-Clubs}{3-Clubs} for two pair. Cates mucked and Rast scooped the pot.

Campbell Leaves Barbero Short

Seven Card Stud

Nacho Barbero: {x-}{x-} / {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} / {x-}

Brian Rast: {x-}{x-} / {3-Clubs}{5-Spades} fold on fourth
Chad Campbell: {x-}{x-} / {j-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} / {x-}

Nacho Barbero bet fourth street with a pair of nines showing and Ben Yu folded, as did Brian Rast. Chad Campbell called and did so again on fifth. Sixth street then gave Campbell the lead and he bet, Barbero called. Another bet and call followed on seventh and Campbell tabled the {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{4-Hearts} for jacks full of fours. A frustrated Barbero showed {k-Hearts}{j-Spades}{10-Spades} for tens and nines.

"How do you catch the last jack there?" Barbero asked more to himself than his opponent.
