"Miami" John Cernuto Bag Big on Day 1a of Event #52: $1,000 Seniors Championship

After a lengthy 14 hours on the felt, Day 1a of Event #52: $1,000 Seniors Championship has concluded.

A total of 2,432 players entered or re-entered before late registration closed for the day. After a solid eleven 60-minute levels of play, 486 seniors bagged and tagged at the end of the day and will return and join their Day 1b counterparts when they combine for Day 2 on October 29, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. local (PST) time.

The day’s action played fast and friendly. Many notables were in attendance, with quite a few of them bagging up for Day 2. The Day 1a chip leader is George Bronstein (585,000) followed by Tim Killday (433,000). Hot on his heels is fan-favorite “Miami” John Cernuto (355,500) who will be looking to add a fourth WSOP gold bracelet to his collection. Eli Elezra (112,500) will continue chasing bracelet number five with an above-average stack. Also, still in the hunt and headed into Day 2 near the top of the chip counts is Poker Hall of Famer JJ Lui (170,000).

Other top pros were not as fortunate and exited on Day 1a before the bagging and tagging stage. Dan Heimiller, Tom McCormick, Matt Glantz, Tom McEvoy, and reigning champion Howard Mash all had their day ended early but may opt to return as every player that did not bag a single chip is eligible to give it another try on Thursday, October 28, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. local (PST) time for Day 1b.

The Truck Goes in the Middle

The action was picked up on the turn with the board showing and a player in the pot tanked briefly before he checked.

The pot was already over 30,000 and Scotter Clark well known for putting the truck in the middle when he goes all-in loaded the truck with chips and went all-in.

His opponent went into the tank for a long time before he made the call putting him at risk for his tournament life.

"If I Bet, Just Go On Break"

On the final hand before the break, Liz Lynch raised in early position, then everyone else got up for break except Eli Elezra in the big blind.

Before the flop came down Elezra said "If I bet, just go on break", and then fired out 2,000 before the cards hit the table.

The dealer spread , and Lynch quickly called.

Before the turn card was dealt, again Elezra said, "If I bet, just go on break", and then he fired out another 4,000 dark.

The dealer put out the , and again Lynch called.

Once more before the river, Elezra repeated, "If I bet, just go on break", and tossed out another 4,000 dark.

The dealer put out the , and one more time without much hesitation, Lynch called.

Elezra showed he had actually made a strong top pair with . Lynch however showed to take the pot.

Josephy Over 100K in Chips

The action was picked up preflop when a player in the cutoff raised to 1,300 and it folded to Cliff Josephy.

Josephy re-raised to 5,400 and the four-bet again this time to 11,300.

Josephy tanked briefly before he went all-in to put his opponent at risk and the cutoff made the call.

Doyle Brunson Can't Resist Lure of Another WSOP

We haven't seen him yet, but according to Doyle Brunson he can't resist the lure of another WSOP.

Earlier this year he tweeted out that he would be playing "a few select tournaments" during the 2021 World Series of Poker.

Poker fans will surely be looking forward to potentially seeing the ten-time bracelet winner in action in some of the bigger buy-in Mixed Game events such as the $50,000 Poker Players Championship.

Dechant Spotted Scooping in a Pot

Event #52: $1,000 Seniors No-Limit Hold'em Championship Day 1a Begins at 10.00 a.m.

The five-day Event #52: $1,000 Seniors No-Limit Hold'em Championship begins today at 10 a.m. Every year, thousands of players convene in Las Vegas for this over 50’s event.

Day 1a will start at 10:00 a.m. and there will be 11 levels of 60 minutes each with a starting stack of 20,000. Late registration is allowed till the end of level 8 approximately 8:15 p.m. One re-entry is allowed and there will be a 75-minute break after level 8 approximately at 7:00 p.m.

The defending 2019 champion Howard Mash saw off international competition from a 5,916-strong field to take the Seniors’ bracelet and $662,594. Mash, a financial advisor from Florida, had taken the chip lead all the way back in Day 2, and kept a vice-like grip on it that only slipped briefly during the mid-stages of play to take down his first WSOP bracelet.

As George Bernard Shaw - and Doyle Brunson - famously said, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing,” and no one can accuse Senior runners of the latter.
