The latest high-stakes mixed game contest of the 2021 World Series of Poker has concluded for the night. Out of a field of 86 entries in Event #36: $10,000 Dealer's Choice Championship, only 42 players advanced, and Argentina's Jose Ignacio "Nacho" Barbero holds a substantial lead over the rest of the field.

After winning a massive pot in 2-7 Triple Draw at the end of the night, Barbero bagged up 425,500 in chips, well ahead of second-placed Joao Vieira (250,000) and Christopher Claassen (224,000). Other big stacks belong to Mike Gorodinsky, David Benyamine, Nathan Gamble, and Ray Henson to name all but a few mixed game aficionados.

Six-time WSOP champion and GGPoker Ambassador Daniel Negreanu made it through with an above-average stack of 153,500 after he busted Event #27: $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. in 8th place. The bid of Adam Friedman to win an unprecedented third consecutive WSOP gold bracelet in a Championship Event is also still alive. Friedman, who won this tournament in 2018 and 2019, made it through to Day 2 with a stack of 97,500.

The mixed game contest consisting of 20 different poker variants played a total of ten 60-minute levels on Day 1 and half of the field was eliminated in the process. All those still wishing to join the action can do so until the cards are back in the air for Day 2 on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. local time at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.

Some well-known poker pros made their first appearance in a 2021 WSOP event such as Scotty Nguyen, Ben Lamb, and Bryce Yockey but neither of them made it through to Day 2. Other big names that came and left without anything to show for were Frank Kassela, Daniel Zack, Randy Ohel, Dan Shak, Greg Mueller, Ryan Hughes, and John Monnette to name all but a few in a field filled with notables of the international poker circuit.

Ohel was among the first players to bust after he never got much going and then ran suited connectors into pocket queens in No-Limit Hold'em. Lamb saw his hopes vanish in a Badugi hand and he succumbed in level six. His opponent in the hand, Chad Eveslage, was also among those to fall in the hours thereafter. John Racener, for example, got it in with two pair in 5 Card Draw only to run into the set of Anatolii Zyrin.

Several players are expected to take advantage of the late registration until the cards are back in the air for Day 2. The PokerNews live reporting team will then be back on the floor when the tournament with the most versatile mix of poker variants recommences.

Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

"Pat one pat," the dealer announced and Nick Guagenti then bet, Robert Mizrachi raised and Ray Henson folded. Guagenti called with very few chips behind and Mizrachi rolled over the {7-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-} for the wheel to leave Guagenti on fumes.

David Benyamine: {4-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} / {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{4-Spades}{3-Diamonds} / {2-Diamonds}

Frank Kassela had most of the chips already invested and then got it in after sixth street with a pair of nines and an open-ender.

"I also have an open-ender," David Benyamine replied.

He peeled the deuce on seventh to make the straight and low, and Kassela bricked his superior straight draw.

5 Card Draw

In a preflop all-in contest, John Racener ended up at risk against Anatolii Zyrin. He tabled the {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{8-Clubs} for kings and eights while Zyrin had the {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{j-Spades} for a set of jacks. Racener drew the {9-Clubs} as his last card and was eliminated while Zyrin's {8-Spades}{x-} were exposed for just a short moment.

Nacho Barbero bet sixth street to get check-called by John Monnette, who then check-raised seventh and Barbero called. Monnette tabled the {a-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for a flush and a low but Barbero had {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{2-Spades} for the superior flush and a better low. That hand left Monnette on a short stack while Barbero continued his rise on the leaderboard.

On the turn of a board {9-Spades}{6-Clubs}{2-Spades}{k-Hearts}, the short stack of Pj Cha went into the middle and Jack Rice looked him up.

Jack Rice: {k-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{6-Spades}

The {10-Spades} on the river gave Rice the superior flush and there was no low in play.

It also appears that Dan Shak has been eliminated as well.

Chad Eveslage raised and then called the shove of Ben Lamb for a mere 4,800.

Both discarded two cards each on the first draw, followed by one each on the second and the final draw.

Eveslage tabled the {4-Diamonds}/{3-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} for a three card trey while Lamb briefly showed an inferior three-card combo before heading out of the tournament area.

After the second draw, Matt Glantz bet on the button and was called by Eric Kurtzman and Benny Glaser. Kurtzman patted while Glantz and Glaser took one card each. Glantz then bet again and Kurtzman was his only caller.

"I have a nine nine," Glantz announced and tabled the {9-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{3-Spades}{2-Hearts} for a Nine-Dugi and nine-five. Kurtzman vaulted out of his seat for a second to study the hand of his opponent and mucked his cards thereafter.

Ryan Hughes had picked NLHE and then won a big pot. Randy Ohel was left with a severe short stack and jammed for just 4,300, which Chris Vitch called.

On the first draw, Christopher Claassen took two and Adam Friedman took one. Claasen check-called a bet and took two once more while Friedman patted. What followed was the check-raise by Claassen and Friedman came along to then see the final draw go pat, pat.

They checked it and Claassen showed the {8-Hearts}{5-Hearts}/{6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} for a three-card six and an eighty-six. Friedman showed the {8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}/{6-Spades}{4-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} for an eighty-seven and the same three-card six to earn just one quarter of the pot.
