Kornuth Leads Final Six in Event #29: $10,000 Short Deck No-Limit Hold'em; Shak and Vieira in Contention

The six-handed final table in Event #29: $10,000 Short Deck No-Limit Hold'em at the 2021 World Series of Poker has been set. Out of a field of 66 entries, the lion's share of the $615,450 prize pool is still up for grabs and two WSOP bracelet winners will aim to increase their tally, while four contenders hope to earn their maiden victory.

Two-time champion Chance Kornuth soared into the lead during the later stages and bagged up a stack of 1,266,000. Two years ago, he finished fourth in this very event and walked away with a cash prize of $93,593. He now sits atop the leaderboard ahead of the live-streamed final table and will aim to earn his third gold bracelet.

Second in chips is Chad Campbell, who is the only other finalist with more than 1 million in chips. There is a big gap to third-placed Moshe Gabay, while a trio is then closely bunched together at the bottom of the leaderboard. That includes Dan Shak, Joao Vieira and Thomas Kysar. For Vieira, it is the second final table appearance of the current festival after he finished third in Event #18 $2,500 Limit Mixed Triple Draw Lowball.

Another four players cashed in this event including Ye Shen, 2019 finalist Rene van Krevelen, Stephen Chidwick, and Young Ko. The last player to leave empty-handed was Chris Brewer, who was eliminated on the money bubble by Vieira.

The penultimate tournament day saw another seven players buy in to boost the field to 66 entries but none of the late entrants made it to the money stages. During the frantic early stages, the field was quickly whittled down to the final three tables, and among those to fall were Ben Yu, David Peters, and Daniel Negreanu.

Ali Imsirovic quickly ran up his stack only to then bow out against Ye Shen in a preflop contest when his dominated ace failed to get there. Dan Zack and GGPoker ambassador Jason Koon also missed out on the money as well, both coming up short of the final two tables.

The perhaps most memorable hand of the day saw Thomas Kysar flop a royal flush against Young Ko. Throughout the day, Kysar nursed a short stack but made the final six. Adam Owen and Chris Brewer were not as fortunate, both ending up just shy of the money spots.

Former big stack Shen became the first casualty in the money and the same fate then also awaited Ko when he failed to get there with king-queen suited against the aces of Kornuth. That wrapped up the proceedings with 31:15 minutes left in level 15 and the remaining six players will be back on Saturday, October 16 at 4pm local time. The final showdown for the gold bracelet will be broadcasted on the PokerGO live stream and the PokerNews team will provide all key hands until a winner is crowned.

Young Ko

Chance Kornuth raised it up to 65,000 to go and Young Ko then reraised to 200,000. Kornuth pulled the trigger and Ko called it off for around 260,000 he had behind.

Young Ko: {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}
Chance Kornuth: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}

While the suited connectors usually had a lot of equity, Ko stood no chance anymore on the {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} turn as the {a-Spades} river further improved Kornuth to aces full. Ko was knocked out in 7th place for $25,386 and the remaining six players are now bagging for the night.

Chad Campbell: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

The board ran out {8-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and the mighty pair held to eliminate Chidwick in 8th place for $20,583.

Dan Shak opted to once more push from under the gun and this time he was called. Rene van Krevelen committed his last 145,000 in the cutoff and the cards were turned over.

Rene van Kravelen: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Dan Shak: {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

The {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{9-Clubs} flop gave Shak a flush draw but nothing changed yet on the {6-Spades} turn.

"I take the chop," van Kravelen said and sure enough, the {q-Spades} then rolled off on the river to eliminate the Dutchman in 9th place for $20,583.

Chance Kornuth and Young Ko limped in. Ye Shen then opted to jam for 285,000 and Kornuth asked for a count before making the call while Ko got out of the way.

"What do you have, ace king?" Shen asked before the cards were turned over.

Ye Shen: {k-Hearts}{8-Hearts}
Chance Kornuth: {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}

"Oh that's good," Shen said as he had two live cards. The board ran out {j-Spades}{10-Spades}{9-Clubs}{a-Spades}{6-Hearts} for Kornuth to prevail with a pair of aces and send Shen to the rail in 10th place for $17,311.

Owen Runs Queens Into Kings

Nível 12 : 0/0, 2,500 ante
Adam Owen
Adam Owen

Adam Owen limped in from under the gun and so did Joao Vieira. Young Ko then raised to 35,000, which he had done a few times previously, and Owen moved all-in for around 250,000. Vieira folded and Ko instantly called.

Adam Owen: {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}
Young Ko: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

The {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{7-Spades} flop left Owen in dire shape and he was drawing dead on the {9-Hearts} turn. "Good game guys," the Brit said in table chat before the {a-Spades} rolled off on the river. With this elimination, the field is down to the final 11 players and the money bubble has been reached.

Thomas Kysar
Thomas Kysar

Four ways to the {k-Spades}{q-Spades}{j-Spades} flop, Young Ko bet 10,000 and Thomas Kysar called while Adam Owen and Joao Vieira folded. Ko bet another 10,000 on the {7-Hearts} turn to earn a call from Kysar and checked the {j-Clubs} on the river.

Kysar now bet 35,000 for Ko to call after brief consideration and he was shown the {a-Spades}{10-Spades} for a flopped royal flush by Kysar!

Vieira More Than Doubles While Dirksen Busts

Nível 10 : 0/0, 1,500 ante
Dustin Dirksen
Dustin Dirksen

Dustin Dirksen announced the all-in for 56,200 and Joao Vieira then reshoved from one seat over for far more than that. Adam Owen on the button snap-called with the far biggest stack of the three players involved.

Dustin Dirksen: {k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}
Joao Vieira: {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}
Adam Owen: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}

Owen had both opponents crushed but Vieira took the lead on the {q-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{8-Spades} flop. Nothing changed on the {8-Hearts} turn and the {j-Clubs} river ensured the elimination of Dirksen. Vieira doubled for 244,500 to essentially cut Owen's stack in half.
