Event #20: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em

Dia 1 Começado

Welcome to Event #20: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em

It's time to raise eyebrows for anyone who has embraced the most popular discipline in poker, the phenomenon of No-Limit Hold'em as one of the toughest no-limit events of the summer gets underway today at the 2018 World Series of Poker.

With a $5,000 price tag, the Event #20 belongs to the upper scale of tournament buy-ins. That naturally attracts the vast majority of prolific tournament grinders who are eager to outlast a largely competitive field and take home the gold wristwear along with a juicy top-prize.

While the so-called "vanilla" $5k NLH event has been regularly featured on the WSOP schedule since 2003, this year is a breakout year for the new concept that has overwhelmed poker arenas all over the globe: the big blind ante. Players should, therefore, be able to squeeze in more hands per level, getting an even more comfortable radius of action with their 25,000 chips they'll obtain in return for their registration slips.

That being said, it's hard not to expect some great battles of the talents from all corners of the world. A look at the past editions reveals some iconic names among the previous champions with the likes of Johnny Chan, TJ Cloutier and Scott Seiver all on that list.

Last year belonged to Argentinian player Andres Korn who defeated a field of 623 to claim his first bracelet together with $618,285. Korn prevailed in a heads-up match against Pete Chen, one of the hardest-grinding players in the world.

Now it's time to begin the quest for the new champion with Day 1 of the four-day event starting Friday, June 8 at 3 p.m. local time. A total of 10 levels are slated for play on the first day and all of them will last 60 minutes.

PokerNews live reporting team will be on their feet to provide live updates from the first riffle all the way until baggings. Make sure to come back to see who'll make it through and who will be forced to try their luck elsewhere.

Housemates in Action

Nível 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

From Benelux, former November Niner Kenny Hallaert and online World Champion Steven van Zadelhoff are both in their seats.

While van Zadelhoff resides in Malta and Hallaert in the United Kingdom, both of them still belong to the Dutch-Belgian poker community.

The top two European grinders share housing here in Las Vegas during the World Series of Poker, and it might as well be one of the most decorated houses in town.

Poker power couple Alex Foxen and Kristen Bicknell are also staying with Hallaert and van Zadelhoff, adding numerous accolades to the table including Bicknell's two bracelets.

Small Pot For Anderson

Nível 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

There was 850 in the pot as Calvin Anderson faced off against two opponents from the blinds. He checked his option and his two opponents also checked behind on a flop of {Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{4-Clubs}

The turn was the {K-Diamonds} and Anderson checked as did one other player before the cutoff put out a bet of 650. Anderson called while the other player folded.

On the {4-Spades} river, both players checked.

"I just have a king," Anderson said showing {K-Spades}{2-Clubs}. It was good and he took down the pot.

Kornuth Talks Himself into the Right Call

Nível 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Chance Kornuth opened with a raise to 300 before a player on the button made it 1,200. Action folded back to Kornuth.

"You gonna lay it down for that much?" the player asked Kornuth.

"I'll draw," Kornuth said putting in the chips to call.

The flop was {K-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} and both players checked to see the {8-Spades} on the turn. Kornuth led out for 1,800 and his opponent called.

On the {J-Spades} river, Kornuth bet again, this time making it 2,850. His opponent thought for a bit, then raised, making it 6,000 total. Kornuth took a look down at his cards and laughed.

"You just have ace-queen here?" Kornuth said. "I feel like I have this but I don't know."

Kornuth tanked for a bit then said, "Ok, I'll give it to you buddy," and called.

"Do I have to show," Kornuth's opponent asked. He showed the {2-Diamonds} only. Kornuth turned up his {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} and collected the pot though as the player never showed his other card.

Kuo Bet-Folds the River

Nível 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Kitty Kuo entered the following pot from an early position but she was closing the action on the river, firing 2,575 to the pot on the {Q-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{2-Hearts}.

Her opponent, sitting in the small blind, countered with a check-raise to 7,675. Kuo took her time but eventually decided that her hand wasn't strong enough to pull a call and folded.
