Dan Heimiller Wins the 2014 WSOP Seniors Championship

Nível 31 : 60,000/120,000, 15,000 ante
Event 017 Champion Dan Heimiller
Event 017 Champion Dan Heimiller

Dan Heimiller was among the bigger stacks out of the 32 players returning to the tables for Day 3 of the record-breaking Event #17: $1,000 Seniors No-Limit Hold'em Championship at the 2014 World Series Of Poker. With an original field size of 4,425, this event was no short feat of accomplishment for Heimiller, who ultimately emerged victorious after almost 10 hours of play on Sunday.

The Las Vegas poker pro collected a career-high payday of $627,462 and his second gold bracelet.

When the field got down to 10 players, David Smith went down to as low as one and a half big blinds before making a chip-and-a-chair comeback to enter the official nine-handed final table third in chips. Then, Michael Frederick lost a flip with the {3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} against the {A-Spades}{9-Spades} to set the stage for the official final table.

Heimiller lost the lead straight away after Donald Maas doubled up through him, and then iIn Hand #11, Jim Custer could not improve with the {A-Hearts}{6-Hearts} versus the {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs} and finished in ninth place. David Vida followed only eight hands later and Doc Barry busted on Hand #22 after being previously crippled by Anthony Wise.

From there, it took only two more hands to reduce the field to five when David Tran lost the coin flip with the {A-Clubs}{J-Hearts} against the {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}. Dennis Phillips finished second to Allyn Jaffrey Shulman in 2012 and he would have to settle for fifth this time after four-bet shoving with the {A-Spades}{9-Hearts} into the {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} of Maas. Exactly one hand later, Anthony Wise hit the rail in fourth place, which led to three-handed play carrying on for two hours.

Both Heimiller and Maas put a lot of pressure on short stack David Smith, and the latter then bowed out on Hand #122 after losing a flip.

Heimiller started the heads-up match with a 3-1 lead, and it only took six hands to determine the winner when Heimiller flopped a straight to send Maas out the door in second place.

With a shining new gold bracelet wrapped around his wrist and $627,462 in prize money in his pocket, the rest of the night was all smiles for Heimiller as he worked his way through the rest of the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. event.

Congratulations to all of the winners from the record event, and especially to Dan Heimiller for becoming the 2014 WSOP Seniors Championship champion.

Donald Maas - 2nd Place

Hand #128:

Donald Maas completed the blind on the button and Dan Heimiller checked his option in the big blind.

They saw a flop of {4-Spades}{3-Spades}{5-Clubs} and Mass called a raise to 600,000 from Heimiller.

The turn card was the {a-Diamonds}. Maas bet 500,000 and Heimiller called.

The river {q-Spades} completed the board. There was a bet of 300,000 from Heimiller and Mass moved all in.

Heimiller instantly called and flipped over the {6-Clubs}{2-Hearts} for the flopped straight.

Mass couldn’t beat it and he finished the tournament in second place making Heimiller the winner.

Hand #54: Dennis Phillips raised to 215,000 and four-bet shoved all in after Donald Maas put in a three-bet to 500,000. Maas called:

Phillips: {A-Spades}{9-Hearts}
Maas: {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}

The {7-Clubs}{3-Spades}{8-Diamonds} flop was of no help to the 2012 runner-up of this very same event, nor was the {4-Hearts} on the turn. Three aces were left but the {5-Spades} river completed the board.

Hand #19: Vida moved all in again for the second time within four hands. Donald Maas asked for a count and the dealer verified it to be 1,145,000. Maas announced call and all other players folded. Showdown:

Maas: {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}
Vida: {K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}

The {3-Spades}{10-Hearts}{J-Hearts} flop gave Vida some more outs with the open ender, but the {5-Hearts} turn delivered a flush draw to take out some of those cards in the deck. The {Q-Hearts} river gave Maas the nut flush and Vida has been eliminated in eighth place. He takes home $66,945 for his efforts.

Final Table Interview: Dennis Phillips

Nível 28 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Dennis Phillips
Dennis Phillips

To the poker community, Dennis Phillips is best known for his horn-blowing rail and third-place finish in the 2008 Main Event. For that win, Phillips earned just over $4.5 million and since then he has earned an additional $1 million in live tournament winnings mostly from small to medium buy-in tournaments.

While we were waiting to speak with Phillips, we overheard a few people talking about him. They didn’t recognize him from his Main Event run, but rather from his runner-up finish to Allyn Jaffrey Shulman in the 2012 Seniors Championship. We spent of few minutes catching up with Phillips to find out what is he’s up to and what’s so special about the Seniors Championship.

PokerNews: You have always said how much you love play the Seniors Event. What about it makes it one of your favorite tournaments?

Dennis Phillips: It is such an enjoyable thing. I love playing in this event. These are the guys I grew up playing with. I have been playing poker for 40 years so we kind of know how to play. And it’s a heck of a lot of fun and when you are relaxed, you sometimes do better.

You have registered some consistent circuit event finishes during the first part of the year. What is it about the circuit events that you like playing?

I just started playing them. I missed the first 16 of them and then I final tabled a couple and thought I might as well try to make a run for the National Championship. Unfortunately, I didn’t make the top 50, I came in 62nd. But heck I only played the last five, so that isn’t too bad.

Will you keep them on your schedule?

I don’t know. I have a lot of things going on. I enjoy playing them but we’ll see.

How much poker are you playing now?

Actually, not nearly as much as I used to. I own a number of companies now and I am doing consulting work for a couple of companies. I play less now than I used to. I’ll only be playing six or eight events this summer. That’s about it. But this event is one I look forward to each summer.

Hand #11: Jim Custer raised to 150,000 and Smith three-bet to 400,000 out of the small blind. The big blind folded but Custer moved all in for what looked like 800,000. Smith called within a matter of moments and both turned over their cards.

Smith: {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}
Custer: {A-Hearts}{6-Hearts}

Both players with suited aces and Custer had some more outs after the {7-Spades}{3-Spades}{5-Spades} flop and the {9-Clubs} turn. However, the {Q-Diamonds} was a brick and he has been eliminated in ninth place for a payday of $51,573.
