Joachim Bold Claims Day 1b Chip Lead of PokerStars Championship Macau Main Event

Nível 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Day 1b Chip Leader Joachim Bold

Day 1b of the PokerStars Championship Macau Main Event has come to an end with 226 players surviving the six 75-minute levels they faced today. A total of 321 hopefuls entered the luxurious City of Dreams resort today with their sights set on bagging chips by day’s end.

A late 6 p.m. start today gave locals some extra time to get to their seat before cards were in the air and a number of players who took part in this afternoon’s Single Day High Roller had the chance to get some more hands in after their luck ran out.

Germany’s Joachim Bold wielded the largest stack by the time the clock ran out, gathering the majority of his 130,500 stack when he picked up pocket aces and busted another player’s pocket queens.

Chinese movie actress Yao Meng (128,700) and Malaysian Yuexin Wang (121,400) hovered very close to the top of the chip counts. A number of notable players secured a seat for tomorrow’s Day 2 as well including Elliot Smith (101,700), Sofia Lovgren (66,500), Manig Loeser (56,800), Winfred Yu (47,300) and yesterday’s Super High Roller Champion Steve O’Dwyer (25,300).

Several PokerStars pros joined in the hunt for a title, though many were lost along the way. Randy ‘nanonoko’ Lew and Aditya Agarwal were able to stave off elimination but Bertrand ‘Elky’ Grospellier, Chris Moneymaker, Celina Lin and Felipe Ramos saw their torches snuffed out.

Ramos was especially frustrated with how his day went. The Brazilian Team Pro hadn’t won a single hand he played early on, seeing his stack dwindle below 10,000. It seemed his luck was turning around toward the end of the night, scoring a massive double up with pocket aces against pocket kings, only to pick up two aces again the very next hand and get cracked by pocket tens.

The remaining 226 players from Day 1b will join the 117 survivors from Day 1a Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m local time as Day 2 kicks off.

Frustrating Day for Ramos Ends With Early Exit

Nível 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Felipe Ramos
Felipe Ramos

PokerStars Team Pro Felipe Ramos had not been having a great day. Things did, however, turn around over the last level but came to a devastating halt just moments ago.

Ramos said earlier today he hadn't won a single hand he played and seen his stack dwindle to under 10,000. The Brazilian had found some luck picking up aces in back-to-back hands.

In the first round with the pocket rockets, Ramos doubled up besting pocket kings. The very next hand though, Ramos got his stack in the middle again, this time against two tens. Unfortunately, the tens emerged victorious and Ramos was left without any chips in front of him and his chair is now empty.

Lotsa Love for Lövgren

Nível 4 : 150/300, 50 ante
Sofia Lövgren

On a flop of {7-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{8-Clubs}, the player in the small blind checked to Sofia Lövgren who was in the big blind and she bet 800. The player under the gun called but a fourth player on the button folded, as did the small blind.

The turn was the {k-Clubs} and Lövgren checked. Her opponent bet 1,200 and she called, going to a turn of {7-Diamonds}. This time, Lövgren led out for 1,800. The other player thought for half a minute before smirking and folding his cards face up, showing {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}.

Lin Didn't Last Long

Nível 4 : 150/300, 50 ante
Celina Lin
Celina Lin

Celina Lin was a recent entry to this event, registering in the previous level. She just lost the last of her chips and is headed to the turbo tournament that just started.

She raised to 650 from under the gun and got calls from both players in the blinds. The flop came {4-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{2-Hearts}. Both opponents checked and she continued for 1,200, getting a call from the player in the small blind.

The turn was the {9-Hearts} and Lin's opponent led out for 1,800. Lin called and the river was the {2-Spades}.

The player pushed all in, easily covering Lin's 6,000 or so that she had behind. She thought for quite a while before tossing in a single green chip to call. Her opponent showed {6-Hearts}{6-Spades} for a full house and she left her seat, tapping the table before walking away.

Here we go, boys and girls. In just one hour, at 6pm local time, the Main Event of the first-ever PokerStars Championship Macau will fire up the second and final starting flight.

For HK$42,400, players will receive a seat and a starting stack of 30,000 chips to try to build a good stack for Day 2. They'll play six 75-minute levels tonight before the surviving players bag whatever they've accumulated to take to Wednesday's Day 2. Registration will remain open through the first two levels of Day 2 as well.

The first flight into this event saw a fantastic turnout of 193 entries. When play paused for the night, 117 of them remained and the chip lead belonged to Zigao Yu who counted out a stack of 162,400. Second in chips was Daniel Laidlaw with 135,300 after holding the lead for the most of the day. Ryan Yu rounded out the top three with 125,200.

At the same time as Day 1a, the HK$400,000 Super High Roller came to a conclusion with Steve O'Dwyer coming out on top after making a deal with runner-up Fedor Holz. Both of those players jumped in the HK$206,000 Single-Day High Roller that is also running today, but Holz has already busted and O'Dwyer is short, so they may both make an appearance in the Main Event today.
