Sam Greenwood Steamrolls into Lead After Day 1 of the Pot-Limit Omaha High Roller in Macau

Nível 12 : 1,200/2,400, 0 ante

Sam Greenwood leads the final 13 after Day 1

The next High Roller tournament of the 2017 PokerStars Championship Macau festival got underway at lunch time in the PokerStars Live Macau poker room at City of Dreams with Day 1 of the HK$82,400 Pot-Limit Omaha High Roller event. The registration for the tournament closed with the start of level 11 and 30 players ponied up the equivalent of $10,605 to take part.

Further six single re-entries were purchased to create a 36-entry strong field and prize pool of HK$2,793,600, which is to be shared among the top six spots. A minimum cash is worth HK$196,100 (~$25,240) while the winner can look forward to an elusive PokerStars Championship trophy and a payday of HK$950,000 (~$122,277).

After 12 levels of 45 minutes each, only 13 hopefuls remained and bagged up chips with Canadian poker pro Sam Greenwood holding a sizable lead over the rest of the field. Greenwood had to fire a second bullet after busting on the first attempt against Quan Zhou, came back even more determined and steamrolled through the tables by busting several players.

Quan Zhou was among those casualties just before the last two tables were reached, when the Chinese shoved the river of an ace-high board with a straight only for Greenwood to check and snap-call the shove with the second nutflush. That hand cemented the lead for Greenwood and he eventually claimed 438,500.

Among those to leave the tables empty-handed without anything to show for were Oliver Weis, Vladimir Troyanovskiy, Edison Nguyen, Kazuhiko Yotsushika and Sylvain Loosli. The former three all fell victim to the hot run of Greenwood, while Yotsushika put his hopes on an open-ended straight and queen-high flush draw. The set of fours of Fabian Geisel held up and the Japanese was gone.

Imad Derwiche registered after the field came back from the dinner break and fired two bullets without success while Jan Collado's bottom set failed to hold up against the top two and flush draw of Martin Kozlov. After the departure of yesterday's HK$206,000 Single-Day High Roller champion Zhou, the last two tables saw two eliminations at the same time. Hongjun Zhao's ace-king suited failed to get there after a raising war with the pocket kings of Joseph Kushner and Jussi Nevanlinna's move with middle pair against the bottom straight of Sam Greenwood also wasn't rewarded.

Shao Me Yang then ran out of chips within two hands and became the last casualty of the day. The remaining 13 players will keep their seat assignments over night and the field will be combined to one table and redraw at the last nine. Ka Kwan Lau (262,500) and Fabian Geisel (206,500) round up the top three while Daniel Geeng registered at the last minute and spun up his stack to 174,000. Other notables through include Joseph Kushner (165,000), PokerStars Team Pro Felipe Ramos (124,000) and Isaac Haxton (114,000), while World Series of Poker bracelet winner Martin Kozlov (22,500) is among the several short stacks.

The action will recommence at 12 p.m. local time with level 13 and blinds of 1,500-3,000. The tournament will play down to a winner, and at the same time the second edition of the HK$206,000 Single-Day High Roller kicks off as well for all those poker aficionados that are looking for high stakes action. The PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor to provide all the updates for both events, as well as for Day 3 of the Main Event.

13 Players Bag Up After Day 1

Nível 12 : 1,200/2,400, 0 ante

The last few hands of the level brought no further action, and the remaining 13 players bagged up their chips after the T-100 chips had been raced off. They will return tomorrow with the same seat assignments and then combine to one table when the last nine hopefuls are reached.

The full chip counts and a recap of today's action will be available soon.

Li Doubles Again

Nível 12 : 1,200/2,400, 0 ante

PokerStars Team Pro Felipe Ramos chipped up earlier and has since stayed in the middle of the pack. He was among two players to call a raise to 7,000 by chip leader Sam Greenwood, as Daniel Geeng also came along as well. On the {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{3-Spades} the trio checked and Greenwood also checked the {A-Diamonds} turn.

Geeng now bet 15,000 and that forced quick folds from Ramos and Greenwood, the latter remains the dominating chip leader.

Over on table one, Maksim Shuts raised the pot from the small blind and Shuo Li called to see a pot of 14,400 emerge on the {7-Hearts}{4-Spades}{2-Hearts} flop. Shuts bet the pot and called the shove of Li. When the cards were tabled, Shuts said "no flush but the five."

Shuo Li: {10-Hearts}{9-Spades}{7-Spades}{4-Hearts}
Maksim Shuts: {K-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}

The wish of the player from Belarus was not granted, as both the {3-Diamonds} turn and the {9-Diamonds} river were blanks.

Yang Doubles Haxton and Busts to Lau

Nível 12 : 1,200/2,400, 0 ante
Shao Me Yang
Shao Me Yang

Hand 1

Shao Me Yang raised to 6,500 from under the gun and Isaac Haxton three-bet the pot from the button for most of his chips. Yang moved all in and Haxton called with the slightly inferior stack.

Isaac Haxton: {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{2-Hearts}
Shao Me Yang: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{J-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

The board of {A-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{2-Spades}{10-Spades}{5-Spades} saw Yang pair his ace only for Haxton to river two pair. The stacks were counted and Haxton doubled for 44,800, leaving Yang on around 10,000.

Hand 2

Exactly one hand later, Ka Kwan Lau raised to 7,500 on the button and Yang shoved his remaining few chips in from the big blind, Lau called.

Shao Me Yang: {8-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}
Ka Kwan Lau: {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{10-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

The board of {K-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{7-Spades} left Yang empty-handed and he had to leave the tournament area just before the end of Day 1.

Geisel and Li Clash Twice

Nível 12 : 1,200/2,400, 0 ante
Shuo Li
Shuo Li

Hand 1

Fabian Geisel raised to 8,000 from the button and Shuo Li called in the big blind. On the {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}{6-Diamonds} flop, both players checked. The {9-Hearts} appeared on the turn and Li bet the pot for 17,200, which Geisel called. On the {2-Clubs} river, Li checked with very few chips behind and Geisel bet enough to give his opponent all but two choices: All in or fold with less than 10 big blinds.

Li opted for the latter and was left with just 15,100.

Hand 2

Geisel raised from the cutoff and Li shoved the small blind, Geisel quickly called.

Shuo Li: {K-Clubs}{7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{4-Spades}
Fabian Geisel: {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

The board came {J-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} and Li rivered trips to stay in the tournament.

The Last Level of the Night

Nível 12 : 1,200/2,400, 0 ante

With all the action once down to two tables, it went almost amiss that this is the last level of the night. The players will keep the seats for tomorrow and the next redraw will then take place for the unofficial final table.

Down to 14 Players as Zhao and Nevanlinna Bust

A raising war over on table four saw a squeeze to 55,000 by Joseph Kushner before table neighbor Hongjun Zhao then moved all in for little more, 67,900 in total. Kushner called and the cards were tabled.

Hongjun Zhao: {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}
Joseph Kushner: {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{4-Spades}

The board ran out {Q-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{Q-Spades} and that was it for Zhao.

At the very same time over on table two, Jussi Nevanlinna tried to get through with a move and shoved the {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{2-Spades}{5-Clubs} river. Sam Greenwood called and Nevanlinna instantly mucked his cards.

Greenwood tabled his {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{4-Hearts} out of the blinds, while the cards of Nevanlinna were still in reach, though, and the dealer turned over his {J-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{7-Spades}{6-Hearts} for a pair of jacks only. Greenwood boosted his stack further and has a commanding lead with 14 players remaining.
