Connor Drinan Wins Headliner By Completing Epic Comeback in Record Time

Connor Drinan
Connor Drinan

The GGSF Headliner-M: $400 PLO-NL, $1M GTD saw 1,962 unique players rebuy 709 times, which meant the 2,671-entry field resulted in a $1,004,296 prize pool. On Day 2, 451 players returned to action looking to play down to a winner.

After 8.5 hours of play, it was poker pro Connor Drinan walking away with the title and accompanying $127,453 first-place prize. Drinan’s win was especially impressive given he was down to just one big blind during three-handed play, but only 10 minutes later he was the last player standing.

It was a testament to the big swings involved in a pot-limit Omaha variant that featured no-limit action after the flop.

The top 300 finishers got paid a minimum of $929.62, and after Rainer Kempe and “yoellalaska” simultaneously bubble the tournament, the in-the-money bustouts came quick. Among those to walk away with a payday but fall short of the final table were Dzmitry Urbanovich (12th - $7,423),Joao Simao (26th - $4,756), Niklas Astedt (27th - $4,756), start-of-day chip leader Fabrizio Gonzalez (72nd - $2,265), Ankush Mandavia (92nd - $1,952), and Patrick Leonard (150th - $1,451).

After Ami Barer bowed out in fifth place, the final four players engaged in a lengthy back-and-forth affair. At one point or another, each member of the quartet looked as if they were going to win it. Eventually, Japan’s Kosei Ichinose fell to Drinan, and then just three were left.

That is when the magic happened. Mads Amot managed to double through Drinan, leaving the former with just 2,272,450 when the blinds were 1,000,000/2,000,000/250,000. Drinan seemed destined to be the third-place finisher, but then he spun it up quickly.

Within a few hands, he was up to 20 million, and then he doubled through Rui Ferreira, who he would dispatch a few hands after that. Drinan took a 3:1 chip lead into heads-up play against Amot, and it didn’t take long for him to close it out and complete an incredible comeback.

Congratulations to Connor Drinan, winner of the GGSF Headliner-M: $400 PLO-NL!

Blinds: 1,250,000/2,500,000/300,000

Connor Drinan, who managed to double through Rui Ferreira not long before, just went from sitting with a single big blind to champion in less than 10 minutes!

First, he dispatched Ferreira in third place after the two got in a preflop raising way.

Rui Ferreira: {2-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}
Connor Drinan: {k-Spades}{10-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}

Drinan was on the right side of the aces-versus-king clash and he held after the board ran out a clean {8-Hearts}{6-Spades}{10-Spades}{5-Clubs}{5-Spades}. Ferreira had to settle for third place and $66,626.42 in prize money.

Drinan went on to take a more than 3:1 chip lead into heads-up play against Mads Amot, and within a matter of hands closed out the victory. The Norwegian player had to settle for second place and $92,150.19 in prize money.

Jin "JackLuck" Su Eliminated in 6th Place ($25,182)

Blinds: 300,000/600,000/75,000

Kosei Ichinose doubled through Jin "JackLuck" Su to leave the latter extremely short. In the very next hand after that happened, Ami Barer limped under the gun and action folded to Su, who moved all in for 791,564 from the small blind. Ichinose called, as did Barer, and the flop came down {5-Hearts}{4-Spades}{4-Diamonds}.

Ichinose checked and then folded when Barer bet 1.26 million.

Ami Barer: {3-Spades}{4-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{10-Spades} (87.66%)
Jin "JackLuck" Su: {9-Clubs}{q-Spades}{q-Clubs}{6-Clubs} (12.32%)

Blinds: 200,000/400,000/50,000

Jin "JackLuck" Su raised to 1.2 million from early position and Ami Barer responded with a three-bet to 4.2 million from the cutoff. Mark Berente called off for 3,272,608 from the button, both blinds folded, and Su got out of the way.

Ami Barer: {j-Spades}{a-Spades}{5-Clubs}{k-Hearts} (43.96%)
Mark Berente: {8-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{10-Clubs} (56.04%)

Berente got it in as a slight favorite but became a huge underdog when the {4-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{2-Spades} flop gave Barer a straight. The {5-Diamonds} turn left Berente drawing dead and he exited in seventh place after the meaningless {8-Clubs} completed the board on the river.

Janne Peltoniemi raised to 560,000 from the cutoff and Joao Simao defended his big blind to see a flop of {3-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}.

"So a fimose": {5-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} (50.06%)
