Patrick Leonard Gathers Massive Stack and Leads 27 Survivors

Nível 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Patrick Leonard
Patrick Leonard

The PokerStars EPT Malta €25,750 Super High Roller kicked off with just two tables in play, but that changed soon enough. The first players were actually not the usual suspects. In fact, the group that sat down mostly consisted of qualifiers and players buying and just about all of them didn't consider the high rollers their bread and butter.

The not so regular crowd attracted the high roller rounders, and before we knew it, the designated area of the tournament area was getting packed. In total 44 unique players showed up, 16 of them made use of the option to buy back in once after busting, making for 60 entries total. With registration open till the start of Day 2, that number might still grow a bit.

27 players survived the day with Patrick Leonard leading the way after 10 levels of play:

Ali Reza Fatehi was the first to bust. He was already a bit short when he got it in with two-pair against the over pair of Martin Finger. Finger hit his set on the turn which left Fatehi drawing dead.

Scott Seiver skyrocketed his stack right after sitting down. He got aces and won a sizable pot, and on top of that he got the bonus of seeing two of his feared opponents get reseated to a different table. He got his 50,000-starting stack up to more than double that before some trouble set in. Seiver faced his neighbor Max Silver in a four-bet pot and moved all-in on a 5-high flop.

"Too gross!" said Silver, "Aces versus kings usually is." replied Seiver.

Silver wasn't so convinced it was aces versus kings. Partly because he had inside knowledge that at least one of the holding wasn't aces or kings, mostly because he didn't trust Seiver. In the end, Silver made the big call with pocket tens and his read was right; Seiver turned over nines. The tens held up and Silver catapulted his stack while Seiver's trickled down.

The hand that got the most attention from the players and the scarce railbirds watching the tournament, was one where Connor Drinan acted out of turn twice in the same hand. First, he checked blind on the flop while being in position, then he announced all in before the river while still not being first to act. Drinan was clearly messing around a bit the first time, but the second time was a bit more confusing.

Big blind [Removed:17], Drinan's opponent in the hand, wasn't sure what to think of it all at first, but in the end made the call for a ton of chips with second pair on an ace-high board. Drinan, it turned out, had not improved his bottom pair with flush draw and left the tournament area, granting Yan one of the bigger stacks in the room. Drinan bought back in but busted again soon after, missing with a double gutshot against the nut flush draw of Max Silver.

EPT Vienna champ Oleksii Khoroshenin qualified the night before and had an extremely successful day. He stayed under the radar for a bit before knocking out three opponents to grab the lead with only a couple of hands to go for the day. He busted Laszlo Bujtas with set over set, eliminated Juha Helppi with a set of jacks versus top pair and top kicker, and in one of the last hands of the day send Behzad Ahadpour home winning the race with eights versus queen-jack. Khoroshenin ended the day with 256,000 in chips.

Despite gathering a massive amount of chips, Khoroshenin is still trailing chip leader Patrick Leonard. The Brit eliminated Jean-Noel Thorel in a rather big pot with jacks against the check-raised bluff with ace-nine of the Frenchman. Leonard returns tomorrow with a massive 260,000 in chips, just slightly ahead of Khoroshenin.

The remaining 27 players return to Casino Portomaso on Saturday at 12:30 pm for Day 2 of the PokerStars EPT Malta €25,750 High Roller tournament. The first level on the schedule is Level 11 (1,000/2,000 with a 300 ante). The plan is to play down to 6 players remaining, who'll play for the big bucks at the live streamed final table on Sunday October 23rd.

Newey's Plan Fails

Nível 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Paul Newey
Paul Newey

When the last four hands were announced, Paul Newey said to his table mates that he'd double up three times and fold the other hand. First, Martin Finger shoved from the cutoff with the {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} and Newey called all in for 11,100 in the small blind with {K-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. The board came {K-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{6-Spades} and Newey doubled.

He then folded the next hand and jammed the penultimate hand of the night, showing the {5-Hearts}{3-Hearts}. In the last hand of the day, Newey shoved and Ramin Hajiyev asked for a count in the small blind. It was 28,400 to go and Hajiyev then folded. Scott Seiver peeked at his cards and half the table was behind him when he tried to squeeze the second card.

"How much is it again?" Seiver asked and the dealer confirmed the amount. "I have a really good hand," Newey added and Seiver then quickly called after hearing those words.

Newey: {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}
Seiver: {A-Clubs}{6-Spades}

Seiver burst out in laughter: "How are you doing this to me?" he joked. The board ran out {Q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} and Seiver improved to a pair of aces to send Newey to the rail. The Brit will however most likely buy back in tomorrow before the start of day 2 to start with a fresh stack of 50,000.

Kozlov Eliminated by Nemeth

Nível 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Martin Kozlov
Martin Kozlov

It was folded around to Scott Seiver on the button and he made it 4,000 to go. In the small blind, Martin Kozlov looked at his card and shoved all-in right away.

Andras Nemeth, sitting in the big blind, asked for a count and the all-in was for 27,700 in total. Nemeth then repushed and Seiver quickly got out of the way.

Kozlov: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}
Nemeth: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

Kozlov needed to hit to survive, but the {7-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{5-Clubs} board didn't give him the help he wanted.

Zinno Eliminated by Schemion

Nível 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Anthony Zinno
Anthony Zinno

Anthony Zinno had only 15,000 left and just moved all-in. One seat over Ole Schemion quickly called and the cards were on their back.

Zinno: {4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}
Schemion: {A-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

It was a race, but Schemion seemed convinced he was going to win this hand. "Thanks for the good deal", he told the dealer, who was about to get replaced.

"Don't do the fast flop", Zinno asked. "Do it slowly."

The dealer did his own routine, quickly spreading out the {K-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{J-Spades}. Zinno was still ahead, but the {A-Spades} on the turn changed everything. He now needed a four to stay alive, but the {Q-Clubs} river didn't help him out.

"One more", Schemion asked, while Zinno stood up from his chair.

"This was my second bullet already", Zinno replied.

"Ah well, good game", was the Germans response.

Thorel Sends Stack to Leonard

Nível 9 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Jean-Noel Thorel
Jean-Noel Thorel

In a previous hand, Jean-Noel Thorel claimed the pot with a three-bet and then opened to 2,000 from under the gun. Patrick Leonard three-bet to 7,000 and Thorel called. On the {Q-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{3-Clubs} flop both players checked. Thorel then check-raised all in after the {4-Clubs} turn and Leonard called.

Thorel: {A-Spades}{9-Hearts}
Leonard: {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}

The {7-Hearts} on the river was a blank and Thorel was eliminated from the tournament after having fired two bullets, then jumped right away into the €550 Hyper Turbo Side Event.

Drinan Out Of Turn, Out Of Tourney

Nível 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Connor Drinan
Connor Drinan

The hand started off rather inconspicuously, with Connor Drinan opening the action from middle position and [Removed:17] defending his big blind.

Then, before any subsequent action took place, Drinan checked.

The floor got called over, and it took Drinan some time to convince the brush he was just goofing around. Nevertheless, if Yan didn't bet, the action would stand. As it was, the flop came {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}, Yan checked and Drinan had to check behind.

On the {A-Hearts} turn, Yan checked and Drinan bet 5,000. Yan flicked in the call.

"All In," Drinan suddenly said.

It was before the river card was even dealt, and the dealer instantly called over the floor again. Drinan might have been goofing around before, but with the previous ruling made, it was clear what would happen: if Yan didn't change the action, Drinan's verbal all in declaration would be binding.

Yan elected to check the {5-Diamonds} that appeared on the river. Drinan had to move all in, as per the ruling, which was for his tournament life. Yan had to call a bet of 21,700, and gave it thirty seconds of thought before calling.

Connor Drinan: {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs}
[Removed:17]: {Q-Spades}{9-Hearts}

"Nice call," Drinan quipped.

Yan's pair of queens was enough to send the EPT Barcelona €10,000 High Roller packing in rather unusual fashion. Drinan elected to re-enter right away, giving him a fresh stack of 50,000 to play with.

Anthony Zinno Eliminated

Nível 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Anthony Zinno
Anthony Zinno

Anthony Zinno, who cashed in all three €10,000 events of EPT Barcelona, won't be adding another cash in Malta yet. The American star found his demise at the hands of Davidi Kitai.

On a flop of {A-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{4-Spades}, Zinno bet, Kitai raised, Zinno moved all in for 37,500 and Kitai instantly called.

Anthony Zinno: {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}
Davidi Kitai: {4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}

Kitai had taken a commanding lead with a set of fours, leaving Zinno drawing very slim. The {2-Clubs} on the turn gave Zinno some split pot outs, but the {9-Spades} on the river sealed his fate.

Zinno instantly re-entered the tournament, drawing the exact same seat he just busted from!

Frederik Jensen Doubles Through Connor Drinan

Nível 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Frederik Jensen
Frederik Jensen

From the cutoff, Connor Drinan opened the action with a raise to 2,000. On the button, it was Frederik Jensen who three-bet to 6,300. Drinan wasn't done yet, however, as he cut out a four-bet to 11,700. Jensen, getting solid odds, committed the extra chips to peel a flop in position.

The flop came {6-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} and Drinan continued with a bet of 7,900, which got a call from Jensen. The {K-Clubs} on the turn followed the same recipe: Drinan bet another 7,900, and Jensen once again slid in calling chips.

The {A-Clubs} on the river made things interesting, as it was Drinan moved all in. It was effectively 32,700 to Jensen, who snap-called the remainder of his stack off.

Connor Drinan: {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}
Frederik Jensen: {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}

Postflop, Jensen held the best hand on each street, eventually improving to a runner-runner flush to secure the double-up.

Dinner Break After Level Six

Nível 6 : 300/600, 100 ante
Patrick Leonard
Patrick Leonard

The first six levels scheduled for Day 1 of the €25,750 Super High Roller at the Portomaso Casino are done and dusted. So far there have been 43 unique players and seven of them took advantage of the single re-entry option to create a field of 50 entries. Among those on their second bullet were Andras Nemeth, 2016 WSOP bracelet winner Martin Kozlov, Juha Helppi, Scott Seiver, Ali Reza Fatehi, Dan Shak and [Removed:17], yet Shak (92,000) and Yan (132,000) are now among the biggest stacks.

Yan lost most of his stack in a four-bet pot with {Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} against the kings of Shak, after the latter got his stack in on a queen-high flop. Yan bought back in, forced a fold from Jean-Noel Thorel to boost his stack and then even knocked out the Frenchman to take over the lead. The online whizard from New Zealand has 134,000 thus far and only trails Patrick Leonard with 148,000.

Charlie Carrel (131,000) dominated his table to build a decent stack thus far, while Scott Seiver (118,000) and Adrian Mateos (98,800) are also among the big stacks. Nick Petrangelo's flip with {A-Spades}{K-Spades} against the pocket tens of Pratyush Buddiga was among the biggest pots played and the EPT13 Barcelona Single-Day High Roller champion was left short, Petrangelo accumulated 81,000 thus far.

Once the players return from dinner at approximately 8.45 p.m., they will play another four levels of 60 minutes each to wrap up around 1 a.m. local time and registration remains open until 15 minutes prior to the start of Day 2 tomorrow.

Jean-Noel Thorel Eliminated

Jean-Noel Thorel

It has been an eventful day for Jean-Noel Thorel, but just like that the Frenchman met his demise in a massive clash with [Removed:17]. It was Thorel who opened to 1,500 from under the gun. Ole Schemion called from middle position and action got folded to [Removed:17] in the big blind. The Kiwi three-bet to 6,700, Thorel called, and Schemion folded.

The flop came {J-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} and Yan kept firing with a bet of 6,500. Without much ado, Thorel shoved all in for 35,000 and Yan snap-called it off.

Jean-Noel Thorel: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}
[Removed:17]: {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}

Needing an ace, diamond or running cards, the founder of Bioderma suddenly found himself at risk for his tournament life. Neither the {8-Hearts} on the turn nor the {9-Spades} on the river were one of Thorel outs, and he was eliminated. With Thorel's chips, Yan is now the new chipleader.
