2016 EPT Grand Final €100,000 Super High Roller Draws 56 So Far

The first day of the 2016 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final €100,000 Super High Roller went off on the opulent grounds of the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort on Thursday.

Play started slowly just after 12:30 p.m. local time, with just six players on two three-handed tables, but filled up quickly with 56 total entries, including 12 reentries, by the time eight levels of play were through and 38 survivors bagged up.

Registration will remain open until 15 minutes before Friday's 12:30 p.m. restart, leaving the record of 71 entries for this event set last year as still a possibility, although a relatively unlikely one.

Argentinian high roller regular Ivan Luca got off to a hot start, almost doubling through Canadian Mike McDonald with a full house to take the early lead. He busted Daniel Dvoress with aces over queens soon after and kept things rolling throughout the day, holding the lead most of the way towards bagging 660,000.

However, a solid day from Belarusian Mikita Badziakouski saw him bag the chip lead on 921,000.

As previously mentioned, just 38 players survived the day, with Max Silver, Igor Kurganov, Mustapha Kanit, John Juanda, and Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier among those building big stacks.

Of course, 2015 EPT Grand Final €100,000 Super High Roller champion Erik Seidel turned up in defense his title, and managed to push through to Day 2 as well.

In the meantime, Monaco resident Patrik Antonius turned up today, and appeared to be only one of a handful of players who busted, but did not immediately buy back in.

Vladimir Troyanovskiy left in a huff when hedge fund manager and recreational player Dan Shak hit a gutshot to bust him in one of the day's more entertaining hands. But even Troyanovskiy scraped together another €100,000 to take a second kick at this Super High Roller can.

Revenge would not come yet, however, as Troyanovskiy busted that second bullet nearing the end of the night and Shak bagged for Day 2, leaving Troyanovskiy with a decision on Friday morning regarding a third bullet.

Things should heat when play resumes at 12:30 p.m. local time in the battle for seats at the final table with some serious money up top and PokerNews will be there from start to finish.

Tune in then to see how it all shakes down in the 2016 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final €100,000 Super High Roller.

Charlie Carrel was the initial raiser but it would all be between Mercier and Shak post flop. The flop was {3-Spades}{4-Spades}{6-Clubs} and Mercier lead out from the big blind for 18,000. Carrel folded from the hijack, Shak called from the cutoff.

The {J-Diamonds} hit the turn and Mercier now bet 38,000. Shak was again the one quick to call.

The {K-Spades} completed the board and Mercier checked his option. Shak moved all in, putting Mercier to the test for his last 194,000. The PokerStars Team Pro huffed and puffed for some bit, but eventually called reluctantly with a pained face.

Shak showed {7-Spades}{7-Clubs} and the pot went to Mercier as he tabled {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}.

Byron Kaverman opened to 14,000 and Max Silver called from one seat over on the button. Charlie Carrel, just having given up a pot to the shove of Daniel Dvoress, now made the same move and was at risk for what looked like 110,000. Kaverman folded and Silver quickly called.

Carrel: {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}
Silver: {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}

The {K-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} flop didn't change much yet, but gave Silver a gutshot on top of his two over cards. On the {4-Diamonds} turn, everything remained the same but the {A-Clubs} on the river sent Carrel to the rail.

A clash between two Poker Hall of Famers has sent Daniel Negreanu broke and John Juanda skyrocketing to a spot near the top of the counts.

Negreanu defended his big blind against a Juanda open, then checked an {8-}{6-}{5-} flop. Juanda continued for 9,000, Negreanu popped it to 21,000 and Juanda three-bet shoved.

Negreanu called off for his tournament life with the {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs} pair and open-ended straight draw. Juanda held two jacks and the jacks held on a {6-}{7-} run out.

Troyanovskiy Leaves Flabber Gasted

Nível 6 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Vladimir Troyanovskiy

We missed the precise action but witnessed the end of a hand where Vladimir Troyanovskiy would eventually hit the rail.

We got there on a flop of {J-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{2-Spades}. Dan Shak had two green 25,000 chips in front of him, acting from the small blind. Vladimir Troyanovskiy, acting out of the big blind, shoved all in for 121,900 and action was back on Shak. Shak tanked for a bit and eventually grabbed the calling chips, and moved them forward.

Troyanovskiy showed {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} and was far ahead as Shak tabled {5-Spades}{3-Spades}.

The Russian high roller wasn't celebrating yet, and in the end would have no reason to. In the contrary: the {A-Clubs} on the turn was a blank but the {4-Spades} on the river sure wasn't!

Troyanovskiy got up from the table, muttered several Russian words followed by "What the f*#k?", followed by more Russian words that didn't sound too positive either.

Not only Troyanovskiy was stunned, several players at the table could barely hold their laughs back as well. One of the masseuses even leaned a bit over the table to double check that what she thought she saw, was right.

Now that Troyanovskiy had left the area, Shak laughed with the table. "Don't write that" he said with a smile on his face. "Nothing, just a standard super high roller hand" Haralabos Voulgaris added. "People tried to tell me there was no value in these $100k's..." Juanda added to the banter.

Luca Busts Dvoress

Nível 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Daniel Dvoress
Daniel Dvoress

From the cutoff it was Mustapha Kanit making it 4,500. On the button Daniel Dvoress three bet to 14,500 and big blind Ivan Luca cold four bet to 44,500. Kanit folded but Dvoress five bet to 94,500. Luca six bet to 144,500 and Dvoress shoved all in. For how much more that shove was, we don't know, as Luca instantly called and showed his {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}.

Dvoress had the {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} and the board blanked out: {6-Hearts}{5-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{J-Hearts}. Exit for Dvoress who made his way to the cage buying back in. Luca is the runaway chip leader of the tournament after 4 levels of play.
