PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final 2015 Final Table

Day 5 of the 2015 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final Main Event started with 15 players, but by the end of the night was down to the final six players. A steady stream of bustouts throughout the day saw the average amount of chips soar to around 80 big blinds, setting the stage for an exciting finale.

The six remaining players are all now guaranteed €233,500, and Lebanese Hady El Asmar leads the way with 3,955,000, just 15,000 chips over Muhyedine Fares in second place. Team PokerStars Pro Johnny Lodden is still alive with 45 big blinds, as is EPT10 Player of the Year Ole Schemion with 71 big blinds.

At the start of the day, Tom Hall was the short stack, and it was no surprise to see him fall in 15th place. He shoved {6-Spades}{7-Clubs} from the small blind, but came up against the {J-Hearts}{Q-Spades} of Dmitry Ivanov in the big blind to bust first for €58,100.

Anton Astapau was the next to go. After being crippled in a previous hand, Astapau shoved from the big blind over Adrian Mateos’ open and the World Series of Poker Europe champ called. Astapau turned over the {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} but was behind to Mateos’ {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}. Astapau wouldn't improve.

With the remaining players assured a minimum of €66,500, it was a while before the tournament saw another bust out. This time it was Frenchman Romain Paon, the Day 1b chip leader, snap-calling Koichi Nozaki’s shove on a {9-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} board. Nozaki turned over the {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}, and Paon had 15 outs to survive with the {j-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}. Unfortunately for him, the {7-Hearts} wasn’t one of them and he was eliminated in 13th place (€66,500).

The next two eliminations were in the same hand and it involved Juan Martin Pastor, Christopher Frank and Mateos. Ivanov raised under the gun to 52,000 and his neighbor, Pastor, three-bet to 115,000 with 380,000 behind before Mateos cold four-bet to 250,000. Frank, who was in the big blind, peeked at his cards and instantly shoved all in for 407,000. Ivanov quickly folded, and Pastor shoved over the top for 495,000 total. Mateos now had the decision, and needed some time. He did the math, and eventually said, "I have to call."

Pastor: {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}
Frank: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Mateos: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}

It was a massive pot, and the players weren't hiding how excited and nervous they were. Frank walked around, Pastor nervously got up from the table, only to sit down again for a bit, and Mateos knew he had slim chances of winning. El Asmar, in the meantime, repeatedly said he had folded jacks.

The flop came {4-Spades}{10-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}, about as full of blanks as they could come. The {Q-Hearts} turn was anything but a blank though, putting Mateos in front to scoop it all. Frank needed a king, Pastor needed an ace, and Mateos just needed to hold. The {7-Diamonds} completed the board on the river, and just like that both Frank (€66,500) and Pastor (€78,400) were heading to the exit.

None of the players wanted to bubble the unofficial final table, but Lyndon Basha, who had been quietly moving up the pay jumps, ended up being the unfortunate bubble boy. The so called "Super Vet," originally from Queensland, Australia check-raised El Asmar all in on a {6-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} board and was snapped off.

"Nice hand," said Basha, as his opponent turned over the {3-Spades}{3-Clubs}. "Picked the wrong time." Basha turned over the {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts} and the board completed {5-Spades}{5-Hearts} giving El Asmar a full house and eliminating Basha in 10th place (€78,400).

This meant El Asmar lead the final nine with a stack of over three million chips, which equated to 128 big blinds. The final table started cautiously, with the short stack Garcia doubling first through Mateos and then Nozaki to move from short stack to the middle of the pack.

Ivanov was left cripped after losing {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} versus Garcia’s {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}, and a short while later moved all in under the gun for his remaining 335,000 chips. Mateos called and showed the {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}, dominating the lower pair of {5-Clubs}{5-Spades} tabled by Ivanov. The board completed {7-Spades}{9-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} and the official final table was set, with the eight remaining players guaranteed a six-figure pay day.

With two players scheduled to be eliminated before the end of Day 5, play was tight at the start with an average stack of 80 big blinds. However, on just the eighth hand of the final table a player fell. It happened when Nozaki open-shoved {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} from under the gun and got called by Schemion in the big blind who showed the {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}. Nozaki had been all smiles being the first player from Japan to make an EPT Main Event final table, and that smile failed to diminish despite the board running out {5-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{8-Spades}{9-Clubs} to send him out the door in eighth place for €120,700.

It was a long time before the bustout that would end the day. The dinner break came and went, but 11 hands upon returning, the elimination happened when Mateos opened the cutoff with a raise to 100,000 and would soon find a whole lot of action behind him.

Markus Ross shoved his stack of 1,380,000 (27 big blinds) from the small blind, and Fares called from the big. Mateos knew enough and quickly folded.

Ross: {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Fares: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}

The {k-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} flop was one which brought some reason for hope. "Heart or queen," Ross said. "Running hearts. Jack of hearts would be good."

The {8-Spades} on the turn was no help to Ross, and he was down to just the two remaining queens in the deck to stay alive. It wasn't happening though as the river was the {j-Hearts}. With that, the night came to an end.

Markus Ross Eliminated in 7th Place (€174,300)

Markus Ross

Hand #69: Mateos opened the cutoff with a raise to 100,000 and would soon find a whole lot of action behind him.

Small blind Markus Ross had big plans for this hand, as he shoved his stack worth 1,380,000 (27 big blinds) to the middle. Big blind Muhyedine Fares glanced over, didn't even ask how much it was, and called. Mateos knew enough and quickly folded.

Markus Ross: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}
Muhyedine Fares: {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}

Ross was in trouble, and he knew it. The {K-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} flop was one which brought some reason for hope. "Heart or queen. Running hearts." Ross said, "Jack of hearts would be good" he added.

The {8-Spades} on the turn wasn't anything Ross needed, and he was down to just the two remaining queens in the deck to stay alive.

It wasn't happening. The river was the {J-Hearts} Ross had asked the Poker Gods for on the turn. Now it was too late, and it meant four things;

  • Markus Ross was eliminated in 7th place (€174,300);
  • Muhyedine Fares was now the chip leader with 5,235,000 in chips;
  • The remaining six players were guaranteed €233,500;
  • The day was done and the bagging and tagging started for the remaining six players.

Limpy Limpy

Nível 27 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante

Hand #64: Action folded to Fares on the bubble and the man from Senegal made it 130,000 to go. Both blinds folded, blinds and antes for Fares.

Hand #65: Garcia made it 105,000 to go from early position. Johnny Lodden in the big blind made the call. {9-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{7-Diamonds} on the flop and both players checked. The {5-Diamonds} on the turn made Lodden bet out 130,000. Garcia called. The {A-Diamonds} concluded the dealing of community cards, and with four to a straight and to a flush, Lodden bet 280,000 into 530,000. Garcia tanked for a bit, and eventually folded.

Hand #66: El Asmar made it 115,000 from the cutoff and Mateos called from the big blind. {4-Spades}{7-Spades}{2-Hearts} on the flop and both players checked. {8-Hearts} on the turn and again two checks. The {7-Hearts} on the river had the same result. Mateos showed {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} but had to leave the pot to El Asmar who showed {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}.

Hand #67: Ole Schemion raised to 110,000 from the cutoff and Adrian Mateos three-bet to 300,000 from the small blind. Schemion, as per usual, wasn't just backing down. The German super star four-bet to 630,000 and Mateos folded.

Hand #68: El Asmar limped in for 50,000, the first time since a long time we've seen someone just call before the flop. "Finally someone who's mixing it up" someone at the table said. Johnny Lodden joined the limping action from the cutoff by squeezing in two 25,000 chips. Small blind Garcia completed, Ross in the big blind was happy to check.

235,000 in the pot and {5-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} on the flop. Action checked around and the four of 'em saw the {2-Spades} for free. Checked around one more time. {7-Spades} on the river and again everyone checked. One player showed {A-Hearts}{2-Hearts} for a pair of deuces, but El Asmar tabled {4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} and took it down.

Hand #59: Raise and take it for Mateos in the first hand after the break.

Hand #60: Fares raised under the gun 110,000 and Garcia called. Garcia then check-folded to a bet from Fares on a flop of {8-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}.

Hand #61: Schemion raised to 100,000 from the hijack and Garcia called from the small blind. The flop was {3-Spades}{9-Spades}{2-Hearts} and both players checked. The turn card was the {k-Hearts}, and again both players checked. The {9-Clubs} paired the board on the river, and
Garcia check-folded to a bet of 160,000 from Schemion.

Hand #62: Mateos raised to 100,000 from the cutoff which took down the pots.

Hand #63: Blind on blind Fares raised to 110,000 and El Asmar called. Fares checked a flop of {q-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{k-Spades} and El Asmar bet out 125,000. Fares called and the two players saw the {7-Diamonds} on the turn. Action went check check and the board paired with the {j-Clubs}. Fares bet 160,000 on the river and El Asmar counted out the chips for a call. He made the call and Fares showed {j-Spades}{9-Spades}. Fares moved up to 2,360,000 but El Asmar was still the chip leader with 3,665,000

Hady El Asmar Still Picking Up Chips

Nível 26 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante

Hand #50: Fares raised to the button for 100,000 and Schemion called from the big blind. The flop was {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} and Schemion check-folded Fares' continuation bet.

Hand #51: This time it was Markus Ross raising to 90,000 from the hijack and Johnny Lodden called from the big blind. The flop of {j-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{q-Clubs} was checked through, as was the {q-Clubs} and both players saw the {k-Clubs} on the river. Ross bet 125,000 and Lodden called. Ross showed {j-Spades}{10-Spades} and his rivered straight was good enough to take down the pot.

Hand #52: Ole Schemion raised pre-flop and Mateos called from the big blind. The flop came {8-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{10-Spades}, Mateos checked and Schemion continuation bet for 85,000. The {q-Clubs} on the turn was checked by Mateos and Schemion continued for 250,000. The river was the {8-Spades}. Mateos checked for a third time and Schemion thought for a bit longer than on the previous streets, before deciding to bet 515,000. The pot was now worth nearly one and a half million; two million if Mateos decided to call. Mateos tanked for a bit before releasing his cards.

Hand #53: Schemion raised to 85,000 from the cutoff, and got called by Lodden on the button and Garcia in the big blind. The flop of {3-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{5-Clubs} was checked by all players, and they saw the {4-Diamonds} on the turn. Garcia bet 175,000 and both Schemion and Lodden folded.

Hand #54: Fares opened from under the gun to 95,000 and Mateos called from the button. The blinds folded and the two players saw {4-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{3-Spades} and Fares check-called a bet of 125,000. He then check-called again on the {4-Diamonds} turn card for 260,000. The river card was the {k-Spades} and Fares shoved for his remaining 860,000 and Mateos insta-folded.

Hand #55: Lodden opened from the hijack and got three-bet from Garcia to 210,000 from the button. Lodden took one look at his cards and folded.

Hand #56: Folded round to Adrian Mateos who raised to 80,000 from the hijack. El Asmar called from the big blind and both players saw {q-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{7-Spades} on the flop. El Asmar check-called Mateos' bet of 90,000 and then both players checked the turn card of {a-Hearts}. On the river the {3-Clubs} was dealt, and El Asmar bet out for 50,000 and that was enough to win the pot.

El Asmar Passes the 4-Million Mark

Nível 26 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante

Hand #45: Schemion made it 85,000 from the button, Mateos in the big blind called. The flop came {8-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{9-Spades} and both players checked. The {J-Spades} on the turn made Mateos check again. Schemion bet 100,000 and Mateos tossed in a single 100,000-chip to call. {10-Hearts} on the river and the two checked, and chopped as they tabled {A-Clubs}{2-Hearts} (Mateos) and {A-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} (Schemion).

Hand #46: Ross made it 85,000 under the gun and El Asmar called from the hijack. Garcia squeezed to 275,000 from the big blind and action was back on Ross. The German folded, but El Asmar called. The flop came {J-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} and Garcia checked. El Asmar bet 200,000 into the 690,000 pot and Garcia folded.

Hand #47: El Asmar made it 80,000 from early position and Mateos on the button made the call. Garcia got right back in it too and called from the small blind. Markus Ross got a good price in the big blind, but folded.

The flop came {A-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} and all three players checked. The {Q-Diamonds} hit the turn and Garcia and El Asmar checked again. Mateos bet 175,000 and Garcia called, El Asmar folded. The {5-Spades} completed the board and Garcia checked. Mateos bet a hefty 465,000 into 665,000 and Garcia tanked for a fair bit before folding. Garcia slipped down to 1,795,000.

Hand #48: El Asmar opened to 85,000 from first position and everyone folded.

Hand #49: Mateos opened the hand with a raise to 80,000 from the hijack. El Asmar in the big blind made the call, and he check-raised Mateos' 110,000 bet on {4-Clubs}{8-Spades}{6-Diamonds} to 230,000. Mateos called.

The {7-Clubs} hit the turn and El Asmar bet 255,000 into the 675,000 pot. Mateos thought for just a bit before folding.
