Dia 1a Começado

Welcome to Cebu

It’s time once again for the Asia Pacific Poker Tour to descend upon the Philippines as Day 1a of the APPT Cebu Main Event is set to begin!

Players have been filing into Cebu from all corners of the world over the last few days and will continue to do so over the next couple. It is expected that this year’s event is going to be the biggest yet and we certainly hope that ends up being the case.

The season four leg of APPT Cebu was held all the way back in late 2010. That year saw 236 players create an almost US$500,000 prize pool and it was none other than Team PokerStars Pro Vivian Im who became the champion. In just under a week’s time one player will join Im on the winner’s podium as the season five champion and we really can’t wait to find out who that player is.

Today is the first of three day one flights and it is expected that a capacity field may be met. Only time will tell, but what we can tell you is that the excitement is starting to build in the Waterfront Hotel & Casino! We suggest you don’t miss all the action, so sit back, relax and enjoy every bad beat, bust-out and suck-out as the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on the floor all day long.

Delay And A Pig

Play was set to begin a couple of minutes ago at 12:15 p.m. local time, but a slight delay has seen the tournament clock paused.

In other news, a suckling pig has been wheeled onto the tournament floor as the players have been told they will be able to try the traditional Filipino dish very shortly. It's not often you see a cooked pig in the vicinity of a poker tournament, but nobody here is complaining.

An introduction from the staff here at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino and from APPT President Danny McDonaugh has seen the cards start flying around the felt.

As usual a great structure sees players start with 20,000 in chips and blinds at 50-100. Today will see seven 60-minute levels, so it won't be too long a day.

And with that, the APPT Cebu Main Event has begun!

Who's In The Room

It’s a petite field here in the Waterfront Airport Casino for Day 1a but it’s a field that’s certainly full of quality. The big screen is currently showing 71 entrants, but with nine tables setup, there are quite a few playing short-handed until a few late registrations take their seat.

Some of those in action here this afternoon include Michael Marvanek, Jesse McKenzie, Victor Chong, Jacky Wang, Octavian Voegele, Claudia Yum, Michael Kanaan, Daniel Laidlaw, Haifeng Xue, Stewart Ballard and Mishel Anunu, fresh off his victory in the PokerStars Warm Up earlier this week.

We also have a couple of past APPT champions with 2007 APPT Sydney champ Grant Levy and 2009 APPT Sydney winner Aaron Benton both taking their seats, while Team PokerStars has one representative here this afternoon with Raymond Wu flying the flag for the red spade.

Early Hand

When we wandered over to the suckling pig table to perhaps get a little taste of the wonderful looking Filipino food, we noticed that Aaron Benton, Daniel Laidlaw and one other player were involved in a hand on the table next to the pig.

The three players went to a {4-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{6-Spades} flop and the first player to act checked it to Laidlaw. A bet of 525 from Laidlaw would see Benton call and the other player get out of the way as the {10-Hearts} was dealt on the turn. This time Laidlaw would check and Benton would throw out 1,025. A call from Laidlaw and the {9-Diamonds} completed the board on the river.

When Laidlaw again checked, Benton would again throw out a bet. It was 1,750 to Laidlaw and he quickly made the call which would quickly prompt Benton to slide his cards into the muck. Laidlaw did the same and took down the handy pot.

Unlucky For Occy Early

The action was opened by Octavian Voegele to 225. The player on the dealer button made the call, along with the player in the big blind.

The three players watched as a {7-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{a-Spades} flop was dealt and the first player to act checked it to Voegele who bet out 400. The player on the button opted to call and the big-blind player got out of the way as the {3-Hearts} hit the turn.

This time Voegele would check-call a bet of 825 from his opponent and the {a-Clubs} would land on the river. Again Voegele check-called, this time when his opponent bet 1,850.

When Voegele's opponent turned over {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}, Veogele would flash an {a-} as he sent his cards into the muck and the pot towards his opponent.

A Couple More Rumble

With such good structures and deep stacks here on the APPT, it’s not unusual to see a few players get a little out of line in the early stages. It's early days here, but we have noticed another couple of familiar players who have tangled in a hand.

Tam Truong may have had some success this year with a pair of Aussie Millions final tables, but his tournament is off to a rocky start here in Cebu.

Truong opened with a raise to 275 on the button before New Zealand’s Daniel Francis three-bet to 800 from the small blind. Not one to get pushed around, Truong came back with a four-bet to 1,875 but Francis was the real deal as he five-bet to 3,300. Truong gave a shrug and called as the flop landed {8-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{A-Hearts}.

Francis tapped the table and Truong tossed out 2,300. Francis called and the turn brought the {10-Hearts}. Both players slowed down and checked it as the {4-Spades} completed the board on the river. Francis checked again and Truong decided to take a stab with a bet of 3,500. After several minutes of thought, Francis made a reluctant call, but it was a good call as Truong quickly threw his cards straight into the muck.

Francis didn’t have to even show as he raked in a nice early pot to move up to 29,000. Truong is back down to 13,000.
